We have to fight the temptations of the flesh, and draw closer to Him, and in our hours of need He will be there!There were so many beautiful passages in this book, but one in particular that struck me was this one:"The challenge of dying to bodily idolatries is that our bodies are still living. Even while we're stretched out before God in sacrifice, our fallen souls mess with our minds. Private thoughts collude with the rest of our members. Those human parts of us long to slither off the alter. Before we know it, our hands open the door, welcoming the flesh to invade our spirits.Quickly, things spin out of control.We all find ourselves in this compromising position on a daily basis. Will our inner man or woman choose life or death? Blessing or a curse? Even the Apostle Paul recognized this battle that rages inside us. That's right. Even the prophets and apostles of the Bible fought this fight. No human being is exempt from this result of having free will."What a profound sentence. What a deep, wrenching thought. None of us are exempt, and each day is a new day that we have to choose. That we have to use our free will to please Jesus!

Michael J. Behe is a Professor of Biological Science at Lehigh University, where he has worked since 1985. From 1978 to 1982 he did postdoctoral work on DNA structure at the National Institutes of Health. From 1982 to 1985 he was Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Queens College in New York City. He has authored more than forty technical papers, but he is best known as the author of Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution. He lives near Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with his wife and nine children.

Unless you were paying close attention in biology class and have read the appendix of this book, some of this book may be a little complex. Even Michael Behe suggests you may want to read a biochemistry textbook. At least if you have pictures of cells and DNA in your mind this book is easier to understand. Especially if you've seen it all animated in a film - that makes it even more interesting.Michael Behe's main point is that life is based on highly sophisticated molecular machines. And he believes these machines were designed by someone intelligent. I will have to admit that the bacterial flagellar motor shouts "I'm designed." You just have to see the picture to believe it.Part One and Part Three of this book are easier to read than Part Two. Part Two contains some mind-blowingly complex explanations. You will be amazed at the complexity of life, especially blood clotting and how the immune system works. You will finally understand irreducible complexity completely. A lot of authors throw that concept around but Behe makes sure you understand it deeply. You will see how systems that require several components to function could not have evolved.I think Michael Behe is a true scientist because he is not afraid of asking very difficult questions and he goes where the evidence leads. He is constantly asking "why?, how?, when?". He also comes to very logical conclusions and is sometimes lol funny. This is not however a religious book and God is only briefly mentioned in passing.What I did enjoy about this book was how Michael Behe made very complex things sometimes seem more simple with excellent stories and explanations. I approached reading this book with apprehension but I came away with the delight of discovery. While this book was written 19 years ago I feel it is still very relevant today. I can highly recommend it to anyone interested in Intelligent Design. I felt that my whole life prepared me to read this book. So I'm not sorry I waited so long to read it.~The Rebecca Review

A lot has happened in the field of ID since the publication of this boo, but it's one of the important classics in it's field. In this book you'll find many great and illuminating analogies and clarifying examples by Behe that he uses to illustrate the irreducible complexity of life at the microlevel. I can see why the Neo-Darwinists reacted so strongly to this book – the examples make it clear in a powerful, and undeniable way, how many details concerning life can not have been developed by random mutations alone. And no, you'll not find anything about God, Jesus or The Bible in this book. Just science, plain and 'simple'.

I finished the book last night and it is simply the best discussion on Intelligent Design I've ever read. Behe's call for common sense on the topic is the best grounded writing and the most refreshing reading I've done, helping to put into perspective all biochemical complexity. Wonderful!After reading in this book about subjects that I have studied multiple times in the past (i.e. the coagulation cascade and the immune system), I'm still amazed as when reading similar recommended books, how it never crossed my mind of how all this came to be in the first place back then when I first studied these subjects. I think that in the past, as I studied the complexity of biological systems, classical Darwinian evolution explanations were boxed away in my brain as something that had nothing to do with the subject at hand. Still, it is mind boggling how thousands of researchers around the world breach such complex subjects on a daily basis and never ask the question: how this all came to be?This is definitely a scientific inquiry worthy of pursuing and there's no reason why scientists should lose it when "supernatural"/intelligent design explanations are taken into account. All the data points to it and ignoring the obvious is what seems to be driving everybody nuts. Others who get away with the theory that doesn't take into account Intelligent Design are just ignorant of the level of coordinated complexity behind living beings. Looking forward for more of his common sense!

I'd give this a 3.5/5, but it's incredibly well-known and well-reviewed already so I'll keep this one short. This is a very sweet, fairy tale inspired piece of shortish fiction set in the town of Wall and in Faerie. In Wall there is, well, a Wall that divides the regular world from Faerie and there's a gap in the wall here that is usually guarded. Rarely there is a market at the gap in the Wall with magical items and the townspeople mingle slightly with the inhabitants of Faerie and this fairy tale type story of seeking a falling star who turns out to be a girl, at least in Faerie, ensues.I'll just note that I "read" this by listening to it in audiobook form. The audio book for this, at least the version I listened to, is read by Neil Gaiman, the author of the book. He's an excellent narrator and it's nice to hear the book how the author envisioned it.

I have read several of Neil Gaiman's novels and I think I enjoy this book and Neverwhere the most.In every review I have made of his novels I comment on the amazing worlds that he is able to vividly birth with his writing. Nowhere, perhaps with American Gods as the only exception, is this more apparent than in Stardust.The fantastical creatures and events that are depicted in this book, are truly a pleasure to behold. The way the story is narrated in particular, makes the reader feel as if events are being guided by some higher power like fate, though it's obviously the author, and this lends itself greatly to the classical fantasy feel of the book.Its also interesting to note that this struck me as being one of the lighter fantasy worlds that Gaiman has crafted. I quite enjoyed this when juxtaposed to the London Underground of Neverwhere.I greatly enjoyed this book and its call back to the classic fairy tales of days past. I can't help but wish there was more.

I loved the movie so much that i bought this book and found that it is a much more adult fairy tale than the film. A lot was changed to adapt the book to the screen, but the overall tone was very similar. There was more sex and more blood and guts, but it was fun to read and I am glad I bought it.

I really liked this book. I guess I was ruined a bit for Neil Gaiman since I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane before any other of his works. I think about that story all the time. It still resonates with me months after I read it. This story feels similar to me. Tristan will be with me for a long time. I also agree with Neil Gain an on the power of fairy tales or myths or whatever you want to call them. A lot of them have been sanitized over the years from the original stories. Original issue fairy tales were much more grim to make a point.I do not like everything Neil Gaiman writes but the stories I do like are so profound and moving that they stick with me for quite a while. Stardust is one of those.

Magnificent story by author AND magnificent story teller, Neil Gaiman. I honestly have never fallen in love with a story like this until now. I am over the moon about it (so to speak), It is read by the author and that is a treat for the listening audience as he is delivering it in the way it was meant to be.I have listened to this in a car with others, and on my own now quite a few times because there is so much detail in the story-telling and it is pleasant to hear.I had seen the movie Stardust, related to this story it is, but never had a real interest in the movie because (I know now) of how it was portrayed. Although it has helped me visualize some scenes in the audio.Best ever story...well, what can I say...other than...this story I highly recommend for anyone with an interest in fantasy and faerie stories...it is ONEGOODSTORY!

After seeing the movie when it first came out and then buying it when it came out on DVD/BluRay and found out it was a book first, I had to get it. I wanted it in Hard Back as I am huge reader and have a large library and prefer to have them in Hardback form as they last longer. The book did not disappoint. The movie was excellent and the book is even better and am super happy w/ it.I have read several book by Neil Gaiman and this is by far one of the best if not the Best Novel he has ever written. Such a great story and for those romantics out there you will really love this book, as it shows that anyone can find love in even the most remote of places and really teach what love is, etc. Enjoy!

I love this book so much in fact that I own it in several different formats and have read and/or listened to it in all. I first got the audiobook, but sometimes you miss things while listening and I was curious have some things were spelled, so I got the kindle version as well. Then I wanted it on the bookshelf both for myself and in the hopes that one of my children will get curious and pull it down when the time is right. I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs a little magic and sparkle in their life.

Obviously it's difficult not to compare a book with the movie. There are some major differences, some good and some bad. The actual story is classic and unique, most certainly an excellent read. My biggest issue however is the lack of character development with our female lead and the fact that there is absolutely no chemistry between the two. It's a fairly straightforward story. Boy goes on journey, becomes a man, and of course he gets the girl in the end.

Robert Lee Maril is professor of sociology and the founding director of the Center for Diversity and Inequality Research at East Carolina University. I started reading this book as part of my research for my next book, partly because the content would be useful to cite and partly because it was my biggest competition. I was pleased after finishing it for several reasons: First, it was clear that Dr Maril has had a considerable amount of first-hand experience working with Border Patrol and has culled a significant number of sources along the border; second, the author is even-handed in his critique of DHS and its component agencies, as well as his support for the safety of law enforcement officers, without any obvious bias or political agenda.The book is titled The Fence, but it covers a wider variety of border-related issues that either directly or indirectly tie in to the border fence or the immigration debate. I was disappointed and not at all surprised to learn about the extent of Border Patrol inertia as an organization. After spending eight years as a female law enforcement agent in the military - not exactly a bastion of forward-thinking progress - I can unequivocally say I had it really good compared to female Border Patrol agents. Any agency that squashes every iota of dissent with retribution and initiative with reprimand is doomed to dysfunction. Fortunately, Maril manages to shine a light on the sacrifices made by Border Patrol agents and other law enforcement officers trying to work within the confines of an archaic system.Where Maril isn't even-handed - and deservedly so - is in his criticism of DHS for overspending, underplanning, and generally having its head up its behind when it comes to reality on the ground in the borderlands. Just his explanation and illustrations of the ways in which DHS has carelessly handed over hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to profit-maximizing contractors to build a fence that is completely unnecessary in some places will leave you in awe. And not in a good way.My only critique is that some narrative sections about certain people he knows and interviews can be tedious, and the details concerning fence contracts, technology, and construction can get too much into the weeds for more casual readers. The book seems to be organized in a chronological fashion for the most part, then digresses, which can mess with the flow a bit.However, this doesn't take away from the substance of The Fence, and the extensive evidence Maril puts forth to back up his assertions about the lack of true purpose and direction for the fence along several parts of its almost-700-mile length. If you're looking for a book that explores not just the history of border fence constructions and all the problems that have plagued it, along with related enforcement and immigration issues, this is the book for you. I highly recommend it for researchers and casual readers interested in learning more about these border security-related issues.

The topic is fascinating and the scope of this project mind boggling. Robert Maril makes the issues clear and recognizes how fluid the border can be. Clear prose to untangle a complex issue.

I really enjoyed this book. It is honest yet not overpowering. I look forward to reading other books by the same author.
