A LimerenceMag.com ReviewThe Long Way Home by Karen McQuestion features four women who go on a road trip from Wisconsin to Las Vegas. Add the elements that these women are barely more than strangers, range in age from 20's - 70's, have conflicting personalities, and are all dealing with the loss of a loved one, and you have just a little of what Karen McQuestion does to put an authentic twist on a "done before" road trip plot.Jazzy is a ray of sunshine that Marnie, Laverne and Rita haven't seen in quite some time. When Marnie makes the decision to go to Las Vegas to reunite with the boy she helped raise, it's Jazzy's optimism that keeps the women moving forward both literally and figuratively. While I loved each of the characters for very different reasons, I must admit that Laverne is by far my favorite. I can picture the other three women rolling their eyes and becoming frustrated with this old woman but she does many things on the trip that I know I would do.What I love about Karen's novels is that she develops the characters throughout the story and you never really have them figured out until the end. The amazing thing about The Long Way Home was that I didn't just love the four main characters, I also found myself mourning for those they lost. Each individual story was powerful and moving without being over the top.I've only said this a handful of times in my years of reading, but I sincerely hope The Long Way Home goes from print to screen. There's nothing in this novel that wouldn't translate beautifully to a movie version, and I would be first in line to see it.I rate The Long Way Home a perfect five stars and recommend it for anyone who enjoys an adventurous, heartwarming book with strong female leads.
Isn't everyone intrigued by the possibility of knowing what lies around the next corner? That's what I liked about Karen McQuestion's novel. By giving Jazzy clairvoyance through her grandmother, the ground is layed for joyful adventure s for the car full of gentlle but quirky women. Each one has some sort of problem to fix, and by the end of the trip, each is in a better place. It's a gentle read, a. relaxing time with just the right amount of good humor and intrigue, a pleasant escape from the troubles of this old world.
If you like nice and neat, cookie cutter stories, the Long Way Home is for you. It was a sweet little story of four ladies in various stages of life, who hardly know each other, yet all agree to set out on a road trip to support Marnie and her plight to rescue her step son from his mom’s house in Vegas. Of all the characters I can’t say I had a favorite. TLWH was a little too smooth for my taste.
This is a very sweet book, not brilliant, but well written. Perhaps a little cheesy at times but the ending makes up for any lack of substance. But I am a sucker for happy endings. This is a story about four women who embark on a road trip. These women not only do not know each other but have absolutely nothing in common, except that they are each fundamentally good women who always are found doing the right thing. To me the book actually gains strength as the story progresses. There is even humor when the oldest in the group pulls out a gun and shoots a violent young man in order to save her new found friend. I like this book . But beware, this is a clean book that you could recommend to anyone without embarrassment....thank you for that!
This was my first introduction to Karen McQuestions work. This was a fun clean story, an easy to read Happily Ever After. I enjoyed getting to know the four women and each of their quirkiness. The hospitality of complete strangers is rare these days but in small town USA you can still find a few Mike and Beth’s. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.
Four women, that are strangers, decide to go on a road trip to Las Vegas. Three of the women first meet at a rec center providing a group for grievers. There is: School Teacher, Marnie, who appears angry, sad, and repressed. She feels powerless after losing her fiancé to a sudden heart attack, and the inevitable disclosure that his insurance benefits and home were left to his former wife, Victoria. Marnie had lovingly care for his son, Troy, a four year-old toddler, for 10 years. When her fiancé died, the child’s mother returned him to Las Vegas to live with her. Mothers should not have to endure losing a child first, but Rita, a homemaker, lost her twenty-two year-old daughter, Melissa, ten years ago. She is not at peace with what has happened. She believes Melissa was murdered by her boyfriend; however, there is no proof. Therefore, the boyfriend hurriedly left town. Twenty-two year old college graduate, Jazzy, works as a cashier. She is not grieving a recent loss. Jazzy, a psychic, appeared at the rec center because she received a ‘feeling’ she should go there. At the second group meeting, Jazzy returned. She had already bonded with Rita and Marnie. Marnie confided she missed Troy. She had discovered through his friend he would be spending six weeks at a boot camp during the summer while his mother worked in Europe. Jazzy suggested Marnie contact Troy’s mother and ask to visit him before he left for camp.Jazzy and Rita decided to join Marnie, who had a fear of flying, during her road trip to Las Vegas. The young, spirited, supportive Jazzy is the catalyst in this story. She befriends Marnie’s octogenarian, unfiltered, Ziploc pill toting, landlady, Laverne, a recluse, who lives in the first floor apartment. The road trip is a challenge for the three older women. There are almost hourly visits to rest stops’ bathrooms. With giddiness, Laverne admitted it was her first trip outside of Wisconsin. She lacked refinement, and doesn’t think before she speaks, often annoying the dour Marnie. Marnie is piqued that Rita won’t speed up a bit. She wants to hurry and see Troy before he leaves for camp. Rita acts as designated driver. She is using her husband, Glenn’s Crown Victoria, is cautious and, will not escalate the speed limit. The warm, personable Jazzy feels right at home, with her eighties music and singalongs. Her infectious smile and personality have the ladies singing and laughing.Jazzy and Marnie helped Rita eventually get justice for her daughter. Jazzy met Carson, the love of her life, in Colorado.I liked the characters; however, I thought the story was too long, especially the road trip to Las Vegas. The thief, which the guarded Marnie picked up, although against Laverne’s advice, should have been omitted from the story. I gave this story three stars.
