Dear Contemplative Christian—Imagine an architect working at home today, who gets an inspiration for a daringly new building design. Excited to start work immediately, she asks her little daughter to get her some paper from her home office, so she can begin to sketch her concept. When her daughter returns with a little pad, she chuckles to herself, knowing that her grand design for this new building will not fit on the small page. This story speaks to the strange position of the Christian contemplative today. We sense the mystical depths of Christianity, but standard Catholic presentations of Christ, the Trinity, heaven, etc., strike us as shallow, even naive — certainly incommensurate with the magnum mysterium of Christ and the Trinity that we’ve have come to intuit them, by God’s grace. If not for the Holy Eucharist of the Mass — veritably “God with us†— we might despair of Catholicism altogether. Such is the odd situation Catholics seeking a deeper life with God find themselves in today — especially strange given Christianity is the most mystical of all religions, as the author of The Real Christ, Bernadette Roberts points out.The Real Christ shows exactly how Catholic theology lost its way — with detail, ingenuity, and comprehensiveness that is the fruit of the author’s five years of extensive research into the shaping of early Christian doctrine. Most happily, this book offers the outlines of a stunning New Christology, which comports with the spiritual genius of Church Fathers such as St. Irenaeus (e.g. Christ "became what we are, so we could become what he is") and St. Maximus the Confessor ("Salvation is transformation"-- into Christ). Still, Bernadette's Christology is not a clever pastiche of the mystical theology of the Fathers, but springs from what God has given her to know directly of the Real Christ, of the Trinity, and of the farthest reaches of the spiritual journey. Some seven hundred years ago, Meister Eckhart was said by some to be a man "from whom God hid nothing." Just so, Bernadette Roberts in our time. What is the essential truth of the Incarnation? What is the Real Christ? Affirms Bernadette at the book's outset:“The Incarnation was God creating Its own human nature – i.e., man’s one universal human nature – eternally one with Itself. This is the oneness of God’s divine nature and man’s universal human nature that we know and call “Christâ€. The term, word, or title “Christâ€, is not the name of any human being, but refers solely to God’s eternal oneness with Man.She continues:
“The Incarnation was not God uniting Itself to any particular human being or person. Christ is not the oneness of two persons, two individuals or two beings (a divine being and a human being), rather, Christ is the eternal oneness of two natures, divine and human. Thus the Incarnation was the revelation of Man (“Universal Manâ€) and God’s Plan for all mankind, and this Truth, this revelation, is everything we know as “Christâ€.“The purpose of the Incarnation was not to reveal the man Jesus – give us another god for the pantheon – but to reveal Man. Prior to the Incarnation Christ did not exist, nor did the man Jesus exist, only God, the divine Trinity, eternally existed. Thus neither as a human being or a human person was the man Jesus divine, or even Christ. It is solely the oneness of God with Its own human nature that is Christ, and it is this mystery of God’s indivisible oneness with the essence of mankind we call the “Real Christâ€.Such insight moved Yale scholar of religion, Dr. Peter Haas, to describe Bernadette Roberts' latest work as, “The most important work on Christian mystical theology [ever] writtenâ€. There is not a wisp of hyperbole in that statement. Nor is there any hyperbole in saying: this book is among the most precious graces God has ever bestowed on humanity.
And outstanding presentation of the true meaning of CHRIST. Bernadette Roberts has spent her whole life as a contemplative soul teaching fellow souls on the spiritual journey what it means to 'die to self" and to know "Christ". While this book is quite challenging, it gives Christianity hope for a future that is filled with a much clearer EXPERIENCE of the Trinity, the Eucharist, the Christ, and what Jesus helped reveal about Christ to the human race.
I have read and continue to read Bernadette’s book, The Real Christ. Clearly she is not trying to change anyone’s sacred belief system. Especially if you have read any of her other books, you will find here that she freely writes from her own experience in her no nonsense direct, to-the-point manner. No persuasiveness to be found; take it or leave it. As she says, ‘truth is unbelievable.’ I am forever grateful for her generous contribution to this Christian contemplative’s journey.
Fantastic and sweet ---- glad I ordered it!
I've studied this book in its original format and am delighted to get a copy much easier to handle. I have also had the incredible good fortune to have studied this text in person with Bernadette. She writes with a clarity and a spiritual depth that could have only have been accomplished by one who has attained to the highest levels of spiritual transformation. This is not an easy read. It is not for the spiritual seeker unwilling to put in the work that is required to study these spiritual teachings in great depth but, if you are willing to take your time, Bernadette will lead you through a breakthrough insight into what Christ is and Christ's relationship with the Trinity. It blew me away.
The Real Christ is an extraordinary work. It is an attempt by the author to put into language truth revealed about the reality and nature of Christ. As the author states, “the sole motivation for this writing is based on my observation the real Christ has been all but lost to Christianity and replaced by what can only be called a “Jesus Cultâ€, the worship of a human being as God...†The truth of Christ can only be revealed—the historical Jesus made this clear repeatedly. What is this truth? As the author makes clear, the historical events that ground Christianity—Incarnation, Crucifixion, Resurrection, Ascension—are a revelation of humanity’s destiny with God: oneness with God on earth and in heaven. This oneness, on earth and in heaven, IS Christ. Christ is an extraordinary dimension of reality, neither created nor uncreated, neither Divine nor human, a oneness of Divine and human nature that is properly its own order of reality. The author outlines how the early Fathers of the Church grappled with ways to express their understanding of Christ. She points out where doctrinal formulas became problematic and confusing. The simple equation taught in so many parishes—that Jesus is Christ, Christ is God, and therefore Jesus is God—would have shocked the early Church. This equation has taken deep root, it tragically misunderstands the historical revelation of Christ in the Incarnation and the on-going revelation of Christ to ordinary people, in the Eucharist and other encounters. In this equation we lose understanding of Jesus, God and Christ. The Real Christ, is an attempt to recover the extraordinary truth about humanity’s eternal place with God that is the heart of Christianity. It recovers Jesus as a whole human person one with God, prototype for all of us. It also gives us an extraordinary understanding of the dimension of God that Catholics know as “Mary.†We are encouraged to imitate the historical Jesus, to do as he did: give our whole being and life to God, and trust that God will reveal to us all that is needed, most particularly the nature of our eternal oneness with God—the reality of Christ.
