This is exactly what it says it is...a LITTLE history of the world....the size of the book alone should be an indicator of that. As a historian, a history teacher and a homeschool mom, I love this book when paired with more in depth material.I have read many negative reviews ( go to the 1 stars for this especially) and have found almost to a T that they are all commenting on the fact that religion is brought into the telling. Religion is a part of history. It was everywhere until very recently and until this day and age, it has always been the color of stories and history books. The way that history is written and interpreted, the objectives that are brought into history - and they ALWAYS are - is called zeitgeist, or the spirit of the age.In a nutshell, this is a lovely book meant for children. It is meant to appeal to their sense of wonder.
We've had "A Little History of the World" for years for our homeschool but my youngest kids asked for pictures of what we were reading about so I ordered this book too. It is the same as the original but also contains color photos of works of art from the time periods discussed and other images to help flesh out the stories for younger kids.My oldest kids grew up hearing this book but now my youngest love listening (and the teens still hang around while I do). The chapters are short but full of the important information, and are told in such a likeable voice that they really feel as if a sweet man from history is telling the stories directly to them.We have the "Story of the World" books but we find them incredibly boring and I don't like the way bible stories are presented as fact in that series. While the author of this book was religious (Jewish), he keeps his religion mostly out of the book. For instance, at one point he talks about something from the bible and he asks if the reader has read the bible and says "you should sometime" but "no hurry."Of course, the book was originally written by a young art student on commission to write it in an incredibly short time frame in Germany before WWII, so it is not going to be the end-all history book for all parts of the world and all history. The author and his grandson revised and updated it before his death, but Gombrich's optimistic voice remained, telling history as best as he could in small, interesting chapters to an audience he clearly cared about.
Wow, I could go on for days about the virtues of this book. It is truly *that* great. It is written for young-ish readers, but it is also perfect for adults who want a refresher course or to learn the things that were skipped over in high school and/or college. This book may be a condensed version of history, but it is packed full of the necessary facts and is invaluable in the simplistic way in which it I stills in its readers an understanding of events that occurred in different places and times, as well as events that happened in different places at THE SAME TIME. I purchased this book for my homeschooled 9th grader, but my husband and I both have fought over it nightly ever since it arrived. Bottom line: buy it. You won't be disappointed.
As a historian and writer, it is important to me that my children have a solid knowledge of the foundations of today’s world. I find myself constantly sharing interesting stories from history—tidbits that might interest 8 and 11 year old girls—but not really creating an overarching picture of the world’s timeline. I was turned on to this book while reading Desperate Sons: Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, John Hancock, and the Secret Bands of Radicals Who Led the Colonies to War by Les Standiford which made reference to A Little History of the World being a great breakdown of world history for children. My 8 year old and I have been reading it together and she’s really enjoying it. I love that the book is written in a way that’s not condescending—as most kids books about adult topics tend to be—but it’s also not so lofty that I’m having to stop to explain something every few minutes. While it’s geared towards children, it was written in 1935-a time when people had much higher expectations for children-so it’s a very pleasant read for adults as well. This is a great buy, a beautiful book, and a wonderful foundation for young learners.
Writing a history book on which every reader will agree is tantamount to impossibility. In this regard, I will not let his perspectives affect my evaluation on this book as a history book.The author uses a simple and friendly language so as for the readers to learn the history readily. As was this text intended for young readers in relatively short length, many historical memorabilia are omitted. However, I do think that is forgivable, given the short length and intended usage of it. This book is not textbook worthy, but a book to compliment history textbooks.Hugely argued against this book was the lack of contents of other worlds than the West. I do agree that the title of this book "a little history of the world" is a bit misleading in this sense. However, I ascertain that this is condonable as well, based on that fact that the author showed much efforts to cover the history of Asia and Middle East.By and large, this is a great history book that is not just dry, nor boring. I recalled many that I had forgotten since high school history class and learned some new things. Never have I felt bored all the way through the book, and it is very rare that I feel this way about a history book. I do plan on reading more books written by this author.
This is a useful book for someone like me whose knowledge of world history is sketchy. Gombrich covers all the history of the whole world in a clear and entertaining way. The reason for only four stars is he is frequently chatty, pausing to address a chatty remark directly to the reader who seems in his mind to be about 8 years old. However, the material covered and the language used are way too sophisticated for children below their teens. That aside, I've learned a lot and am much better at Jeopardy as a result.
