I listened to this book in it’s entirety recently. All I can say is: Life Changing!!!Now I DID read the “1 star” reviews. This is my take. Physicians that take the time to do bad reviews on Amazon? Ok. But really, there are studies to support about any angle. Truly. But what grasped me were the authors patients with life altering issues, having such incredible improvement or loss of symptoms... not to mention it is just good science. Sure there might be ways to question some of the studies. But the ones that mattered most were the ones not opposed by the nay-sayers 1 star reviewers. Like how they have long since admitted low fat high carb is not (heart) healthy (etc). Duh.If you truly believe that high carbs/sugar diets are not an issue in the American diet, then you aren’t looking around. None of the negative reviews that want to poo poo the idea we don’t need so many carbs (grains), fail to understand, it seems, that he has plenty of naturally occurring non-grain carbs in this diet. Enough to do what is needed in regards to carbs in our body!Society’s whose longevity is related to a plant based diet are typically those very active regardless of age and as was mentioned, a healthy community... that is great for them. Their diets, LIKE HIS, are NATURAL carbs and none processed. In the day of virtual community and low activity, a high carb/low fat diet, well, there is plenty of proof it is not working for us!!There is also plenty of proof of our deficiency of omega 3’s, Vitamin D, and so forth.Go ahead and defend your carbs. I think I will go with the basic statistic that diabetics are twice as likely to develope Alzheimer’s and dynentia and take a different path towards wellness... Cuz the road I was on with the SAD (standard American diet) gave me cancer, and put my overall health at huge risk. With low carb I lost a TON of weight, improved my cholesterol ratios and reversed my pre-diabetic state... aye I need grains. Or not!Again-I highly recommend this book! I am alwo seeing changes in my children as we switch our dietary priorities!

My son started having myoclonus, then he started with Absence seizures....I researched as much ass I could. Put him on a gluten free diet instead of giving the meds from our Neuro...all disappeared! Them one day we cheated and had a donut....BAM! He had his first grand mal within 3 minutes of eating the donut. Back on gluten free diet and has been seizure free for 4 months.I continue to read up on this info and came across this book. Its a good read.

I'm sold on the author's authority and argument. I'm all in--started following his advice and feel so much better. Down two pant sizes, brain fog is gone, and haven't gotten any of the colds/bugs that the rest of my family has picked up this season. I'm looking at my food choices in a different light, and best of all, my internal medicine physician is on board with the program.

These two books have changed our lives. We read Grain Brain first, then bought Wheat Belly. We are now eating a wheat free diet, and we bought the Wheat Belly cookbook. It's helping us adjust to our new way of eating. I've lost 14 pounds in 6 weeks, and my husband lost 8 #'s. At first we went slow, but we wish we jumped in "whole hog" because he is feeling 100% better. He is an Adult 2 diabetic, has high blood pressure, and had irregular heart beat for awhile, was on two heart pills. He also has RA. Now, he feels so good, he's drop one of the diabetic pills, and one of the heart pills, and is doing great. We don't miss wheat products at all. Now am eating all sorts of veggie casseroles , trying new vegetables, and eating low carb fruit like berries, apples, and melons. We love eating the good fats; butter, avocados, coconut oil in my tea, yes my tea! Olive oil and vinegar on green salads, lots of eggs, like every other day an omelet, or eggs and ham. Eggs in our salad, and boiled eggs for snacks, so satisfying. I can't tell you how happy we are to feel good and lose weight at ages 68 and 71. Amen, what more could I say. Two happy wheat free people in Anna, TX. Thankyou, Doctors Davis and Perlmutter!!!

Amazon.com Review

Lips, brows, frown lines--they’re all in motion in an expressive face. Stop Staring analyzes facial structures and movements and shows animators how to enliven the faces of their characters. The author, whose own handsome head (in modeled form) graces the cover, is an experienced animator currently working on The Sims. He writes with a dry wit and a confidence born from experience. The book is friendly but also loaded with content and precise in its directions. "I am by no means God’s gift to animation, but I do pretty well at making a talking head look like a living one, not just a set of gums flapping." This is not a how-to manual, but a richly detailed guide to achieving the right movements for a given situation and emotion. The companion CD includes all the pieces readers will need in order to work along with the text: models (both realistic and stylized ’toon characters), lip-synching samples, finished Quicktime movies, and even a copy of Maya Personal LE. (More info and some movies can be found at jasonosipa.com.) Readers move from "Getting to Know the Face," to synching audio, working on the mouth, eyes, and brows, and rigging. Osipa has created a methodology for facial animation that gets results and makes the process fun. The book can be used as a step-by-step guide for learning new skills or finessing techniques, or as a reference book for troubleshooting specific expressions (for example, "happy eyes," "frustration," and "sneers" are all in the index). Although the projects are presented using Maya, the concepts involved pertain to animation in general. There are lots of production tips and, in Chapter 13, case studies using five scripted scenes. Readers can even begin with this last chapter, watching the movies (they’re funny!) and enjoying Osipa’s debates as he works through animating his face telling a lame bartender joke or a sassy ‘toon gal weighing the pros and cons of pink and blue bows. This hip writer knows what he’s talking about, even when it’s his own animated mug that’s doing the talking! --Angelynn Grant

#1,506,175 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is the book to get if you want a good introduction into facial modeling, rigging and animation. It's focused around rigging a face using blend shapes, or shape keys for all you fellow Blender users, though it does talk a bit about bone based rigs. If you want to create a face rig from the ground up or extend the features of a prefab rig then this is where you have to start. If there was one negative criticism I have of this book is the weird ordering of the chapters. It alternates from chapters on modeling a specific facial region, the mouth for example, then a chapter on creating the blend shapes of that region. I am a fairly advanced modeler but I am a bit new to rigging so having to read a chapter than skip one becomes a bit confusing at times especially if you have to back track to an earlier chapter to revise a few things. I wish all the modeling chapter followed each other and then all the rigging chapters there after.

I recently finished a big project that required sync and realistic facial expressions, and reading this book was like being bathed in a pure, heavenly light. Osipa guides you through the creation of numerous plausible blend shapes and helps you avoid the most common errors. Before I bought this, I was doing everything wrong. The range of emotion that this system is capable of expressing is near total, and certainly enough for any project I can think of short of a major motion picture.Don't make the same mistakes I did the first time around. Unless you have years of instruction on human anatomy in motion under your belt, buy this book before you attempt any kind of lip sync or serious facial animation. It will save you from the pain of building inaccurate shapes and watching your character painfully contort into each of them to strain out an expression. The information Osipa provides on lip sync in the age of computer animation is very, very valuable to someone like myself who has tried to sync in the past and failed. The facial rig that the book provides in the attached CD and the automatic scripts that apply it are, alone, worth twice the modest price of the book.I have a lot of marginally useful books on 3d that contain just enough information to cash in, but this resource is clearly heartfelt. Osipa wants to teach you how it is done and his easygoing style makes it a pleasure to read.

Brilliant concepts and discussion of details, but somewhat slow in painting the big picture. He never really comes out and says it, so I will. The end result is a control rig for 40 blend shapes, each painstakingly hand drawn and tuned. The state of the art doesn't allow shortcuts; I don't think it ever can or will. If you can accept that all 40 shapes are needed to model the range of human facial expression, this book is for you. Osipa makes a compelling argument that each is necessary; guides you through the modeling to make it possible; and wraps up with an elegant rig to control and manage them all. The result is a talking head, simply amazing in its range and control of nuance. Still, 40 heads per character is a huge investment. Is it worth "Doing Right?" Or can you continue to fake it? Buy the book; play with the rig; and find out for yourself.

I can highly recommend this book to every character animator. Jason's approach to facial animation is different, but very intuitive. And thanks to the CD that comes with it you can clearly see the high quality you can get out of his facial animation setup.I love the book because I work with Maya, and if you are a Maya user you will get a lot of sweet things out of the book. But of course Jason's method is not about which button to use in what software. He simplified all the current approaches to facial animation and put his own twist to it, and that's the strength of the book. It's not different just to BE different and attract new readers, the way he works makes sense and the results are impressive.A must buy!

Mastering facial expressions in 3d is tremendously difficult, so after trying out many books, I can definitely say this is the best book on the subject. It covers important modeling concepts, important facial anatomy issues and moves you through several exercises to get you up to speed. If you are trying to learn character animation, this is an indispensable book. I have both revisions and I would say I liked them both.

I am a 3d professional artist for a long time, I have to say I have read hundreds of books, watched hours of training videos, read pages of internet tutorials anything related to 3d animation. No other training material comes even close to things I have learned reading this book. It is a treasure that you have to keep somewhere close to your desk as a reference, whether you are modeling a character head, building blend shapes or rigging . I have used the techniques successfully in many projects. I thank Jason Osipa for writing this book and for teaching me how to build superior 3D characters. This is my second SS book, I also have the first edition. This 2nd edition is a lot different then the first.

I count this, along with "Imitation of Life" as my two need-to-own books for computer animation.

As author of "Virtual Humans" I'm always looking for good books that bring a higher level to face animation. This is it. Jason writes in an accessable style, good humor and the kind of authority you want in a book. Frankly most other books that cover this subject are pretty boring and the faces are ugly. Jason is a very talented pro who privides you with everything you need to create the best, most realistic facial animation in remarkably easy ways. I recommend it highly to those of you who want to perfect your face animation techniques. His approach is different and better than any other that I've seen. I especially recommend this book to anyone who has purchased "Virtual Humans"Peter Plantec

I generally like history books that put things I am doing in some context, though I am far from a historian or expert on Belly Dance.I thought this was one that might be interesting to learn from. I am new to Belly Dance and cannot fully speak to whether some portions were accurate, though I took some of these things more as a discussion and description of possibilities as compared to being a definitive answer when looking at earlier parts of the history.Overall I found it to be a good general overview/primer of Belly Dance. So if you are looking for a general overview (as oppossed to a book with moves) it was good.

As an american bellydancer I am constantly explaining that the art I create comes from a vast history of diffrent cultures combined to form a fusion dance. This book gives written accounts in history from people who traveled the world and witnessed many raw forms of "belly dance". It was a very informative [historically] book & inspires women of all shapes & sizes to express themselves through dance.

I wish Tina Hobin had stuck to writing about the last few centuries of Middle Eastern dance, as she does this very well. Unfortunately, she also includes much material that seems to be trying to find the origins of modern belly dance in prehistoric times, something that can only be theorised not presented as fact as it is here. While I can understand people wanting to believe this myth of our dance's ancient orgins, the simple fact is WE DON'T KNOW and probably never will.If you want to learn belly dance moves, this book does not have any illustrations to help you. Instead, I recommend attending a class or buying a DVD (e.g. Bellydance Basics and Beyond: Technique for a Solid Foundation,Contemporary Bellydance and Yoga Conditioning with Ariellah, or many other valuable efforts). If you want an overview of belly dance, its history and some moves, Bellydance: A Guide to Middle Eastern Dance, Its Music, Its Culture and Costume does it better. If you want to learn about the ancient cultures of the Middle East, there are many, many books which will be more use to you.If you want to learn about the more recent history of belly dance and modern Arab culture and can cope with skim reading, feel free to browse this book. Or you could check out Andrew Hammond's book Popular Culture In The Arab World or any number of other titles: for example, Belly Dance: Orientalism, Transnationalism, And Harem Fantasy (Bibliotheca Iranica. Performing Arts Series),Looking for Little Egypt,Dancing Fear and Desire: Race, Sexuality, and Imperial Politics in Middle Eastern Dance (Cultural Studies).

A better title for this book would be, A Brief History of Religion, Music and Dance in and Around the Middle East. What information there is about belly dancing could fill only one chapter, the rest is interesting, but not really pertinent. There is a whole lot of information in this book. It would, no doubt, thrill cultural anthropologists, but is of little use to anyone interested in belly dancing. Easily read for all the facts. The last chapter gives written directions for movements in belly dancing. Really...., buy a DVD if you are interested in learing how to dance.

I purchased this book some time ago hoping to learn specifically about the cultural origins of what is termed "belly dance" in the west, rather than as an instructional book. I agree with other reviews - it is more of an anthropological study on dance in general. It is a very "dry" read, which is ok if you get the information you are looking for, but I didn't! Because I am mad on both books and belly dance, I am glad to have it in my collection but heed the information in other reviews so you know what you are getting.
