My son and i had fun drawing animals out of this book. My son is eight so that says a lot about a this book. It reminds me of the old style disney movies when i was a kid. Its clear and easy to understand. I still use it for reference. I needed to draw a horse and used this book the other day to draw one.

A wonderful resource for any artist interested in drawing some well-known animals; such as, horses or dogs. The sketching by Hultgren is phenomenal. This is NOT a book for beginning artist. If you are looking for a drawing book that gives you the step-by-step instructions using circles, triangles, and lines, you will not find that in this book. Other books are available that will give you this type of instruction.Hultgren comes more from the viewpoint that you already have a fundamental understanding on how to draw. He does offer tips on drawing animals, but it is more advanced than draw three circles, then connect this circle to this circle. He speaks more of the specific elements of different animals; such as, verbally instructing you to divide the animal into three parts - forequarters, belly, and rear - and drawing a dorsal line between these parts. He also provides a section on mood and feeling that I found interesting and personally helpful. Furthermore, sections on the use of line, action analysis, and brush technique are included.Now to get down to the specific animals Hultgren covers. For me the selection worked well, but it is not all encompassing. It couldn't possibly be, or else you wouldn't even be able to pick up the darn book. He offers detailed instruction on the Horse Family, Deer Family, the Cat Family, and the Bear Family. These are the most detailed sections of the book offering instruction drawing the skeletal and muscular structure of the animal. These sections also provide instruction on action, motion, specific body parts, and types of the animal. For instance, the lioness or the draft horse.The other chapters of the book feature cows and bulls, giraffes, camels, gorillas, pigs, dogs, foxes, kangaroos, rabbits, squirrels, and elephants are not as detailed and do not offer instruction on muscular drawing. Additionally, each animal section offers a short introduction to caricature from 1/2 page to a maximum of 2 pages. I personally enjoyed looking at the caricatures. Not all of them were "typical" cartoon drawing. The final chapter in the book covers composition in animal grouping. It gives the artist the fundamental principals behind animal grouping composition.This book is one of my favorites because it has really challenged my drawing abilities. I highly recommend this as a resource to those who have a fundamental understanding of drawing. For those of you starting out in drawing, I would recommend you find another resource first before pursuing this book.

Our daughter is working hard to become a math/science focused teacher for elementary and middle-school age students, and has been doing very well in the classroom and in the field.However... the girl just could not draw at all -- not even stick figures -- and she really wanted to learn how to improve her ability to draw so that she might be able to use those skills to help make points in the classroom. That's an admirable goal; she is trying to do everything she can to help improve her ability to teach.The pictorial materials in this book began to help her visualize how animal drawings should be conceived, as a build from detailed understanding of the animal itself. By looking through them and then tracing over the drawings, she gained better understanding (and now at least her cats look like cats and not alligators...).Combined with a few other instructional books like Fast Sketching (Fast Sketching Techniques: Capture the Fundamental Essence of Elusive Subjects) and Drawing Realistic Faces (Secrets to Drawing Realistic Faces), she really has come a long way in the last year.Highly recommended as part of a learning program.

I haven't finished going through it so far, but already I've used a few tips to improve my drawing skills. Dynamic poses are something I still struggle with, and this book discusses how to create the illusion of motion in a simple and easy to understand fashion.Keep in mind this isn't your typical how-to-draw book, so I'm not sure how it will be for beginners just trying to get started in animal drawing, however for someone at an intermediate level who is trying to improve their skills, it makes a good reference.

A great animal anatomy book for artists for the price. Had details but not so much detail that it loses its artistic value.I wouldnt recomend this for beginners however. Still a great book.

I've mainly stuck to drawing portraits of friends and family members but have wanted to explore how to draw animals. This book is filled with beautiful drawings that are also accompanied by a short explanation and a rough sketch as well to show you the process of the artist at work. It is incredible at teaching you the anatomy of deer, bears, horses, etc, explaining how they move while also giving skeleton and muscle drawings to help you grasp how the animals body should look. There are also a few more cartoon-looking drawings as well if you are interested in drawing in a more toonish style. The writing is brief but tells you exactly what you need to take from the drawings being shown. I sat down and done some quick 10 minute sketch work and was blown away with how well my sketches came out. I love this book!

As a keen cartoonist and author of children's books about the sea I was looking for a serious book that combined not only authentic anatomy with a guide to capturing the essence of an animal's 'character' in cartoon format. Former Walt Disney animator Ken Hultgren's book promised this, and I was not disappointed. My only plea on how to make it even better would be to include a few marine animals (whales, dolphins, fish, crabs etc.) which are my own specialty. But that's just me! If you want a book that gives you all you'll need to draw serious pictures or cartoons of a wide range of (albeit) terrestrial animals, this is definitely the one to get.

It was better than I thought it would be since it is written by someone who knows about appraising carnival glass. Its well organized with pretty pictures and the prices are right next to each picture so you don't have to check in the back of the book for the price info.

At first I thought this book was too complex, but it's actually an easy way to learn the patterns and colors of Carnival Glass. The best part is the "Facts at a Glance" where you can quickly see who made the item, the colors it came in, if there are repros etc... I have been able to identify patterns and learn about companies quickly and easily. The only problem is that it seems to focus on antique Carnival Glass and has no pictures or info on the later items (for example the toothpick holders by Imperial) This is overall an excellent book if you want to focus on older, more pricey pieces.

I am fairly new to collecting carnival glass, and I have found this to be a good resource for helping me in my hunt. My only regret is that it is not larger, so that it would include even more manufacturers and photographs of items.

I will always keep this book with me when I go "antiquing". It's very informative with easy to read text and the pictures are beautiful. They show every detail of the patterns in this glass. There's also a price guide in the back. Makes me want to go out looking for more Carnival Glass.

This is a very fine book for the brief descriptions of glass pieces, stunning photographs and the price guide. I know the newer the book the better for good pictures. It is just the advancement in technology in cameras that shows up these antiques.

Warman's books never disappoint me! This carnival glass book has gorgeous photos that look like 'eye candy' for the glass collector, or even an eclectic vintage / antique collector, like myself! Wonderful book for me to learn more about carnival glass! I luv it! :O)

The book is long out of print and nearly impossible to find, but Althea has some extremely devoted fans. Ella is estranged from her mother, and Alice has never met her grandmother.Alice and Ella live an odd life. They are constantly on the move, never staying in one place for too long, always trying to stay one step ahead of the bad luck that seems to follow them wherever they go. Bad things happen to and around them: their house is flooded, a wildcat enters their house through an open window, creepy people seem to follow them, and Alice was briefly kidnapped by a fan of her grandmother when she was 6 (she was returned unharmed). But now Althea is dead, they're living in New York, and Ella has gotten married. Ella is hopeful that they've moved on from the bad luck, but one day, Alice sees the man who kidnapped her, and he doesn't seem to have aged a day. She goes home to find her mother missing, and she turns to a classmate named Ellery Finch for help. Finch is one of Althea's superfans, and the two set off on a quest for the Hazel Wood, Althea's estate, which they hope will lead them to Ella.This book is dark and creepy. Think the Brothers Grimm stories as they were originally written, before they were Disneyfied. Alice isn't a particularly likable heroine. She has anger management issues and she's very prickly. But I felt like she was realistic. Her behavior makes sense when you consider that she's a kid who's had no stability in her life. She's had to move every few months, she's never finished a whole school year in one place, and she has to take care of her mother. Of course, she has some anger issues.Alice and Finch's journey is weird and twisty. They start out in New York, looking for clues to the Hazel Wood's location. Finch once owned a copy of the book, but it was stolen, and tracking down another copy proves problematic. They encounter all kinds of creepy people and it seems as though the Hinterland is coming after them. Finch tells Alice some of the stories he remembers from the book, and I loved this part. The bits and pieces of the stories in the book are deliciously creepy, and I would have liked more.I really liked that this book had no romance, something that's rather rare in YA. There's nothing wrong with romance, and I read tons of YA fantasy with heavy romantic elements, so obviously, I have no issue with it, but this book is really about a mother/daughter relationship, and a romance was unnecessary.This book has a really perfect ending. I often feel that book endings don't live up the promise of the rest of the book, but I have no issues here. The resolution was exactly what the story needed.

I devoured the first half of this book in one sitting, but the second half? I dunno. Maybe it was partly because I was so tired the second night, or maybe I just lost the thread of what was happening, but it took me a few nights to finish. I found Alice's time in the Hinterland confusingly random and disjointed, and the end never really felt like any kind of resolution, just a lucky escape.I was enthusiastic about it for the first half and then I just fell out of love with it. I stopped caring whether Alice would escape or even really figure out what was going on with her grandmother's work, and what her mother had done, and what's the what. I found myself just wanting to finish, reading through passages that made little sense to me because I couldn't remember how they related to anything else, or even if they did.The characters? Alice was sort of interesting, Finch more so. Ella was something of a non-entity as was her mother. Harold and his daughter seemed more real to me than Althea and Ella ever did. And there was so much potential here, so much that could have been said about portal fantasy, so much more that could have been made of the whole Persephone story, which clearly informs the novel.I guess the bottom line for me is that while I enjoyed much of it, I was disappointed in the end, and that makes me sad.

I love fairy tales, from Disney to the original Brothers Grimm, and this book is stuffed full of new and original ones, and they’re as dark as the sea is deep.In my opinion, the book is told in two parts. The first sets up the characters: Alice, Ella, Ellery, and Althea. You get the picture of who they are and what you can expect from them as well as the setting and tone of this story. This is my favorite part. Alice sprinkles in bits of her past as ways to tell a story, to explain why she is how she is, and because she realizes that some of her memories are connected to what’s happening now. I also loved the language, both Melissa Albert’s and Alice’s. It’s fresh, and new, and eye-catching. I found myself making mental notes of my favorite lines, or rereading pages because I liked them so much.The second half of the book is the epic quest part, or at least that’s how I think of it after so many lectures in school about Joseph Campbell and The Hero with a Thousand Faces. This part is great in terms of content, plot, and visuals. I’ll be honest, I did find some things lacking in this section. There were many pieces of plot that were brushed over, not explained, and/or just left me feeling unsatisfied. I get what she was going for, though. When you read The Hazel Wood, (and you totally, totally, need to read this book) you’ll get what I mean. The story is Alice’s, and therefore we will only get Alice’s knowledge. But it doesn’t mean I don’t wish she asked more questions about the things I wanted to know.This book is a standalone story, so there aren’t any cliffhangers you need to be prepared for. However, Melissa Albert announced at the signing that she has two books in the works, one being another story set in this same world, the other being the actual stories from the book inside of her book, Tales from the Hinterland. While I’m excited for both, it’s the latter that has me fangirl squealing on the inside.As a whole, this book is fantastic and so worth your time. It is easily my favorite book I’ve read this year, and is definitely something I’ll be recommending to friends. So read it. Read. This. Book. I promise it’ll be worth your time.
