Awesome book. Nothing on numerical relativity. The Pseudo time relaxation is pretty cool (that's in there)

I ordered this book by kindle. When I reached the download page, I was informed that a software update was needed, which was available only for OS 10.6. My computer runs OS 10.5.8. I have looked back through the writeup for the item but I don't find any mention of the need for OS 10.6.I would like a refund.If you check, dear Amazonites, you will notice that I am quite a good customer; I realise, one of millions.

I was really looking forward to this title, hoping in a book that would go beyond the usual toy problems of typical standard numerical simulations books. Also knowing that this book included real working code I was also hoping it would bridge the huge gap between theory and practice with a practical approach. Boy, was I mistaken. hard to believe, but there is not a single line of code in this book! The numerical codes in Fortran (yuk) are just dumped in the CD and superficially described (just barely saying what it does and what the input and output are) in a final 10 pages ( yes, you read that well, 10 pages) "chapter" that looks more like an appendix to anyone with a little common sense. I know college professors can be a bit disoriented about what is important and what not in their field of research (I still my quantum mechanics prof. employed approximately the same time to try to explain us while there are 2n+1 numbers between n and -n and to introduce us to Fourier Transforms) but this is really too much! The bunch of theory and equations that this book is littered is totally useless unless you show me how these equations get implemented in code.And if I have to wade through the code in a CD trying to figure it out by myself, what is the value of buying this book? Given this approach , I really pity the grad students of these guys...

This is an excellent introduction to Numerical Astrophysics. If you want to learn a particular topic (i.e. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics), the chapters are short, sweet and self contained. It will give you the necessary logic and basic physics used in the field, which will empower you to understand the literature.Often when approaching a new field, the literature is impossible to learn from b/c papers aren't written for newbies. This is a great reference book that fills that void and gets you up to speed and prepares you to read the research. I just wish that it was a bit cheaper.

The book Numerical Methods in Astrophysics is an excellent overview to the field. It does a good job of finding the middle ground between being concise enough to be readable, but containing sufficient information to be useful. Many of the chapters could be expanded to full length texts themselves if the authors included all the details and multiple examples of how to code things, but this is not the purpose of this book. Rather, the purpose is to introduce a graduate student or active researcher to the field, and to give a brief overview of the field as understood by the authors. Each chapter is a mostly self-contained review of the subject of that chapter, and includes sufficient references to more primary literature so the interested reader can learn more if he or she desires.I don't know of any other book available that covers so many active areas in numerical astrophysics so well. This book is an absolute must for anyone getting started with or interested in numerical astrophysics (e.g. grad student or motivated undergrads). It covers hydrodynamics, evolution, and radiation transport in a clear and concise manner with plenty of references for deeper study.As a side note I did not find much use for the included code but others might.

The authors cover a broad swath of topics, providing a clear understanding of the physical principles underlying numerical astrophysics. I have read many books on making of movies for many years so I know a lot about movies and making them. This book has got to be one of the best ever written about the subject. It takes you through the whole film from start to end and shares everything that went into making the film become a reality. You will learn a wealth of information of how and what goes on in making a film come to screen. You will see how what looks like one simple location scene in a film can be various locations very far apart from each other. You will learn about all the permits and restrictions needed and having to follow on location from working on beaches and water and islands to construction of buildings, props, billboards, protection of beaches, sand dunes, and so much more red tape. About daily cost and feeding rules for cast and crew. Learn what it takes when things are done for real without CGI how weather and water and tides and boats on the horizon effect everything before the digital age could make everything different but at a cost of what looks real and fake like today where most is done in CGI compared to really building it or doing it. No other movie book except Jaws 2 The Making of a Hollywood Sequel that I have red went into so much detail about unions, permits, restrictions, pay, feeding, cast, crew, props, etc...A true full account of every detail it takes and took to make a movie from start to finish. One of the best excellent books ever to learn the entire movie making process from start to finish.

Firs off, I will tell you that I am a huge fan of the film and have been looking for this book for over a year. It has been out of print for a while and was only just reprinted this last April, 2016.If you are looking for THE definitive book on the making of JAWS - this is it! This is the most comprehensive, behind the scenes coffee table book ever written on this astonishing movie. This book is DETAILED! Incredible behind the scenes photos I have never seen before, detailed accounts from every major player - production designers, actors, extras, numerous production staff, producers, spielberg, etc all way in on the nearly 5 months it took to shoot this beast. There are newspaper article scans from local Marthas Vinyard papers that summer (1974), drawing, designs and a month by month account of exactly what was shot on what day.I bought the paperbound version of this book but make no mistake - even the paper bound version is a heavy, gorgeously produced, first class coffe table book you will absolutely want to leave out. The quality of this book is just amazing. I plan on buying more of these as gifts.

Okay, I've read (and no doubt you also have read) the negative comments regarding this being a pricey "paperback." The term "paperback" is not accurate for this book. If you're like me, and you enjoy reading about the makings of movies, then you probably have also purchased one of J.W. Rinzler's "Definitive Making Of" Star Wars books. Just to give you an idea of the real size and overall presentation of this book, I will say that it's identical to a softcover version of one of the Rinzler books. Even down to the thickness of the pages, the overall feel of the book. In other words, it's worth it; you won't feel jipped after buying it.Now, on to content. Again, much like the Rinzler Star Wars books. The font is small, and there's lots of text jammed into the corners when the pages are filled with images. Yes, this book has a LOT of great images, but it is NOT a picture book. This thing isn't one of those D&K books that you receive and are totally bummed out that it's just a hyped-up book full of pics you've seen before. This book a.)features images NEVER seen before, and b.) it's got plenty of text/captions to prevent it from becoming just a picture book.I've read both the old "Jaws Log" as well as Edith Blake's book more than once. At the beginning of this book, the author indicates that he,too, had read these books over and over. He intentionally set out to make a book that brought more to us than those two had done. This book is THOROUGH, giving you stories of how some of the extras got hired. There are images of the shark(s) being built that you've never seen before. This book feels like it's taking its time to tell this story, which is refreshing, instead of lazily rushing through it all, jamming hundreds of pics in there to hide a lack of content.I recommend this to any Jaws fan, to any Spielberg fan, to any fan of behind-the-scenes Hollywood. Awesome.

Very fascinating read from a local's point-of-view. While reading the book you almost felt like you were there. Tons and tons of pictures and stories. It's hard to imagine how the author collected all this information. I started reading it then had to return to it later cause it's just so vast. However, if you do read it don't let too much time in between reads. I did and lost track of the many characters. It became hard to associate who with what they did.Truly a book for Jaws crazies!

I love the book and think it's quite useful. It arrived in great condition, and was as described. However, the price on the books cover is 29.95. I paid 5 times that much. I don't blame the seller they were just putting it out at market value. It's just crazy.

Cost me quite a lot more than the original price! Disappointed.

For the ASL legal professionm

This is a great resource for interpreters! Legal interpreting is nerve racking enough. So knowing that I have a clear understanding of the vocabulary, and how to sign it, is a huge relief! I reccomend this dictionary to all professional interpreters, it's a must-have!

I've studied this book in its original format and am delighted to get a copy much easier to handle. I have also had the incredible good fortune to have studied this text in person with Bernadette. She writes with a clarity and a spiritual depth that could have only have been accomplished by one who has attained to the highest levels of spiritual transformation. This is not an easy read. It is not for the spiritual seeker unwilling to put in the work that is required to study these spiritual teachings in great depth but, if you are willing to take your time, Bernadette will lead you through a breakthrough insight into what Christ is and Christ's relationship with the Trinity. It blew me away.

The Real Christ is an extraordinary work. It is an attempt by the author to put into language truth revealed about the reality and nature of Christ. As the author states, “the sole motivation for this writing is based on my observation the real Christ has been all but lost to Christianity and replaced by what can only be called a “Jesus Cult”, the worship of a human being as God...” The truth of Christ can only be revealed—the historical Jesus made this clear repeatedly. What is this truth? As the author makes clear, the historical events that ground Christianity—Incarnation, Crucifixion, Resurrection, Ascension—are a revelation of humanity’s destiny with God: oneness with God on earth and in heaven. This oneness, on earth and in heaven, IS Christ. Christ is an extraordinary dimension of reality, neither created nor uncreated, neither Divine nor human, a oneness of Divine and human nature that is properly its own order of reality.The author outlines how the early Fathers of the Church grappled with ways to express their understanding of Christ. She points out where doctrinal formulas became problematic and confusing. The simple equation taught in so many parishes—that Jesus is Christ, Christ is God, and therefore Jesus is God—would have shocked the early Church. This equation has taken deep root, it tragically misunderstands the historical revelation of Christ in the Incarnation and the on-going revelation of Christ to ordinary people, in the Eucharist and other encounters. In this equation we lose understanding of Jesus, God and Christ.The Real Christ, is an attempt to recover the extraordinary truth about humanity’s eternal place with God that is the heart of Christianity. It recovers Jesus as a whole human person one with God, prototype for all of us. It also gives us an extraordinary understanding of the dimension of God that Catholics know as “Mary.” We are encouraged to imitate the historical Jesus, to do as he did: give our whole being and life to God, and trust that God will reveal to us all that is needed, most particularly the nature of our eternal oneness with God—the reality of Christ.

I purchased this book to find new resources and tools to manage my PTSD and Anxiety Disorder after a recent death in my adult life brought back.memories of childhood traumatic events.For me this was a refresher course on some topics, that I covered in therapy at the time I first learned my "social anxiety" was actually based in a traumatic event, making it essential to work on that before I could move forward.I was actually taken by surprise that "death" remained such a powerful trigger point for me. That I really became so overwhelmed in /by my symptoms that I didn't even notice I was dealing with P.T.S.D. exacerbation.This book has really helpful me to "polish the tools" I already had in my toolbox (along with my Worry Box App). I would recommend this book to others. If you are just beginning to build your tool box, or if you are looking to do a refreshing of your skills.

If you're doing this one on your own, make sure you have somebody who's a good support and maybe can even take things over for you for a few days. The exercises take time, and they bring up things you thought or hoped you'd forgotten. Best way I can describe it is I'm back at work, my home life has dramatically improved, and I've faced down a lot of demons while working through this book. It's not an adult coloring book or some new age woo-woo. It makes you look straight at what happened to you, how it affected you in the past and is affecting you now, and how you can start doing the hard work to make your life better. Plan to spend at least a couple months on it, especially if you're trying to work or take care of a family while doing it. And be aware it will trigger whatever you've been fighting if you do the exercises honestly. It's like I've been running down dark tunnels with dead ends, and the only way to straighten my life out was to go back to the beginning and work my way through. This book helped.

This is, by far, the most effective treatment for my PTSD thus far. I've been on medications, seen multiple therapists, talked to others, but this book works best for me. Before asking you to go through the activities, it walks through step by step and defines PTSD (and relevant terms) and prods you to take a short quiz to determine whether or not certain things apply to you. Very helpful in learning about myself and what I need to work on to get through my PTSD. 10/10 would recommend.

I love this workbook. I'm nearly finished with it. I would highly recommend going through it with someone who knows and understands your PTSD. Whether that be a therapist or a trusted friend or family member. It truly helped me sort out my trauma and move forward in my life.I would be more likely to recommend this book to those who are well into their knowledge about their PTSD. If you're just starting out with your PTSD healing journey, buy this book for later.

Excellent book for those wishing to work on building skills and identifying triggers when diagnosed with PTSD. Would've given it five stars, but, unfortunately, this latest version completely eliminates explaining the subtle differences between PTSD and Complex PTSD.

Not what I thought it would be. If you are self aware enough to know you suffer from PTSD, you are going to need more than this workbook. Might be helpful if you know someone with PTSD and want to understand them better, but it does not have alot of depth. I thought I would see more explanation.

My councilor has been doing trauma and ptsd for 20 years and reccomended this for me to deal with events from my child hood. It's difficult to reopen those wounds make sure you are ready and you have a support system in place ready to catch you because it's like being right back in the thick of it. Go slow and don't be afraid to stop if you need to.

I bought this to find a workbook that was easily accessible to my patients and still sound information. I was very impressed at the easy of format, yet realistic use of DSM-V criteria and evidenced based information. When Paul Johnson writes biography, the intent is not simply to recount the facts of someone's life: it is didactic. Johnson is an historian who intends to teach a lesson with this writings, to show us what we should draw from the subject's life, works, and thoughts to better our own lives.Thus it is with Johnson's biography of Socrates, the first and perhaps still the greatest of the moral philosophers. Rather than a dry recitation of what we know of Socrates's life and works, Johnson looks at themes in Socrates' life --bravery; his love for Athens; an absolute commitment to doing what was right and just; and irony-- and uses them to illustrate those things that should be valuable in our own lives, and thus improve our lives for being valued. Johnson reads much into the texts and context, sometimes making assumptions and presenting them as facts because he's sure they must be true, and there is the occasional odd error, but the broad lessons Johnson teaches (or, rather, relates what Socrates taught) and the beauty in his writing make them forgivable. The Kindle version is clean, with no typos that I could spot, though it is rather expensive for such a short book.Recommended as an introduction to the person, to help make the philosophy more accessible.

Paul Johnson has a unique ability to summarize a topic in a brief but very informative manner. Having enjoyed his bios of Napoleon and Churchill, I jumped on this when I saw it, and I was not disappointed.As usual, Johnson's text reads easily. The editing of my Kindle edition was a little sloppy in places, but not so bad as to hamper my enjoyment of the book.Johnson covers Socrates' life well, and the reader comes away with a good feel for who he was--a physically unattractive man who believed in Athens and its people and who sought to bring out the best in them. Thanks to his student, Plato, we know what Socrates believed and how he taught.According to Johnson, Socrates was a highly principled man who loved Athens, fought for Athens, taught Athenians of all levels of society and paved the way for monotheism. In the end, he was unjustly sentenced to death, but died a noble death continuing to exemplify the principles he treasured. In the process, Socrates became the most influential philosopher of all time.The primary question that Johnson left unanswered for me was how Socrates supported himself. It is clear that Socrates lived a simple life, but it is unclear exactly how Socrates actually supported even his minimal needs.This is an excellent introduction to Socrates. Highly recommended.

Johnson spends a great deal of effort untangling the thought and character of Socrates from that of Plato, mostly to good effect. However, he ends up presenting a Socrates who shares our contemporary values in somewhat unrealistic fashion. Nevertheless, the book reveals the context and basic outlook of Socrates the Athenian sage rather well. Overall, a very good and easy to read introduction. Recommended.

I actually found this book to be good. You have to keep in mind that this book is largely an interpretation of who Socrates might have been based upon what little evidence we have. I'm not saying I agree with the author's interpretation entirely, but I enjoyed the theory.One reviewer commented that the author claimed Socrates would've voted Republican. I didn't find that anywhere. I did notice that the author felt Socrates was a conservative person, and from that maybe some readers thought the writer was suggesting something else.I bought this book because so little is out there about a father of Western philosophy, a person who deeply influenced Plato and some of the other most important figures of ancient times. I really wish I could've met Socrates, and the author gave me a taste of what that might've been like.The older I get, the more I agree with some of the principles Socrates supposedly upheld.

Superb view and understanding of the life and environment of the founder of Philosophy and real democracy.

Good. Not terribly in depth. The "A Man for our times" connection is not developed in a satisfying way. Like Jesus of Nazareth, Socrates did not leave behind a body of written work. We know him as others have wished us to.

I'm so impressed by this book that I have mailed a copy to my grandson's classical academy. I recommend that the school give a copy to each ninth grader. They read some Socratic writings.

When you first think of Socrates it is not always in modern terms. Not only is Socrates a "modern man" in every sense of the word, he is a man across time. When the mind opens darkness flees. The Socratic method of questioning is really simplisticity codified. A child asks why because they don't know and are not afrad to say so. The same with Socrates - his ego does not get in the way - only his mind and it is wonderfully open. I recommend this if nothing else as a method to open the mind and expand our individual universe.
