Excellent refresher to economics 101 and 102, but misleading title. The book doesn't really go into any depth on trading or investing based on the given economic topic. Instead, it's more of an introductory to intermediate discussion of the given economic topic. It's great in that respect, and will likely serve as a good refresher for the CFA exam, but don't expect actual advice specific to making financial decisions based on the economic environment.

This is a terribly written book. It is difficult to understand and seems to cover the results of a process before it defines the process! It made passing my Global Managerial Econ grad class very difficult. I highly recommend instructors make another choice if they want their students to learn.

Concise, well written and a great refresher from grad school. I would highly recommend this book to help with a review of various economic topics.

I did not finish this book entirely but I do not like it much. It is written as if it is a scietific study with al ot of references to books that may not be available anymore. It has no scientific value because it reworks the data of others and no new insights are gained.As an inforative book it misses anything that you can call a storyline. Only the part about the Mississipi bubble is readeable.

The author does an excellent job debunking the myth about the Dutch tulipmania from 1634 to 1637. He conducted detailed economics and historical research, and uncovered that just about everything about tulipmania as described in Charles Mackay book "Extraordinary popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds" is either inaccurate, or exaggerated. The Dutch never mortgaged their entire properties for a single bulb. Also, Holland did not suffer a depression after the tulip market crashed. According to the author, very little net wealth was actually wiped out. Instead, the price of rare tulips was driven by rational economic considerations reflecting the short supply and the rising demand for this rare tulip bulb type. The price of these tulip bulbs at anyone time reflected expected investment returns from investors. Other economists have also documented that the price of tulip bulbs did go back up to similar level several centuries later associated with favorable economics change in this market.The author goes on to further explain the rational economics fundamentals behind the Mississippi Bubble of 1719-1720 resulting from an attempt to swap French government debt for equity in a private company, financed by printing paper money. He similarly explains out in similar economics terms the South Sea Bubble of 1720 which was the equivalent of a leveraged buyout of the national debt of Great Britain. Both investment schemes ultimately collapsed, but their respective economics and strong government support at the onset gave these investment propositions very strong fundamentals. These investments are not so different than investments today in GSEs like Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, and Sallie Mae. Because of accounting irregularities, the stocks in these GSEs have recently taken a beating. But, there is no ground for talking about a GSE stock bubble.The author has strong credentials to support his iconoclastic thesis that is not that well known by the economics establishment. He is a global strategist at Global Markets Research at Deutsche Bank and Professor of Economics at Brown University.The Internet bubble has often been compared to the three investment bubbles mentioned above. Sadly enough, internet stock investors were by far the most foolish among investors of these four different investment bubbles. This is because at the onset the fundamentals behind internet stocks were far weaker and speculative than the ones associated with the investments associated with any of the three other bubbles.

During the collapse of the so-called Internet bubble, the legendary Dutch fiscal intoxication with tulips, called tulipmania, was widely cited as a lesson from history. The financial press hyped stories of deluded Dutch farmers who mortgaged all their worldly possessions to purchase a single prize tulip bulb, only to meet financial ruin when the bubble inevitably burst. Economist Peter M. Garber dug into history, and found that most of the common wisdom about the tulipmania was false. So, if you ever wondered how Dutch investors could have been so foolish, there is a simple answer: they weren't. Famous First Bubbles clearly evolved from a series of academic papers but, nonetheless, the book is entertaining. The primary focus on the tulip bubble makes the sections on the Mississippi and South Sea Bubbles seem like afterthoughts. We recommend this to iconoclasts who enjoy debunking historical legends and to bubble watchers everywhere.

The author's failed analysis of the definition of the word " speculation " on pp.7-8 (he interprets the word " speculation ", not as the attempt to forecast the short run psychology of the stock markets ,but to mean that one does not know how events will play out over time for the entrepreneur over the long run)means that he assumes away the existence of any uncertainty.There is only risk.This risk can be analyzed and calculated using the Normal(Log Normal ) probability distribution.This basically leads him to his implicit acceptance of the Efficient Market Hypothesis(EMH).EMH claims that stock market prices are always an accurate reflection of the current value of a stock. All the information about prices at any given time is reflected in the price of the stock.This leads to the claim that the normal distribution correctly models the time series data of changing prices and that all changes in prices are an accurate reflection of where the market should be.There can NEVER be ANY financial bubbles .The problem with this argument is that there is not a shred of historical,empirical or statistical data to support it.Keynes had already pointed out to Tinbergen in 1939-40 in the Economic Journal that the time series data would have to be uniform,homogeneous and stable over time in order to correctly assume that the error terms (residuals) were normally distributed.Mandelbrot and Taleb have demonstrated ,since 1963 and 1995 ,respectively ,that the data is not close to being even remotely normally distributed over time.The distribution that correctly models the financial markets is the Cauchy distribution.The author is completely ignorant of this fact.Instead of considering whether markets are subjected to the " wild " risk of the Cauchy,he just assumes " a can operner",i.e., that the pricing data is normally distributed.There is also no reference to Adam Smith's learned and scholarly evaluation of the Mississippi and South Sea Bubbles.This book is not worth buying or reading.The author starts and ends with the claim that stock and financial market price changes can be modeled as being normally distributed.I can't recommend this book for purchase except if a reader wants to know how anti scientific a believer in the EMH can be.Garber's argument is identical to those of Bernanke in the 2006-2008 period -there were no bubbles in the housing or stock markets.Greenspan knew otherwise.Unfortunately,he did not have the courage of his convictions.He went along for the ride with the Garber's, etc.

Dennis Foley, a lifelong Chicagoan, is an electrician for the City of Chicago's Streets and Sanitation Department. He received his MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia College, and his work has appeared in Poetry Motel, Hair Trigger 22, Hair Trigger 23, Block's Magazine, Gravity, The Beverly Review, The Villager, The Ever Dancing Muse, and Life Stories—a casebook in the first person. I just picked up the Streets and San Man's Guide and I read it in one sitting. If you are a Chicagoan, this book is a must. He serves up a bunch of neighborhood eateries (diners, pubs, fast food joints) where the price is right and the grub is good. And what's better than that is the Streets and San Man's tone: the guy is funny as hell. I drove to a few of the detours he provides and they were great. The Big Chief detour was hysterical. I went to one of the eateries the other day for lunch (T's Tap) and it was just like the Streets and San Man said it was. The food was good, cheap, and the people were nice. Foley has a winner here.

We borrowed this book from the library and I read it to my 3yr old. After a bit, she started to "read" on her own. Of course she was missing words here and there (she is just starting to speak in sentences), but the book was easy to follow. By picture association, easy sentences, and rhymes, she started to read it to me :) of course she is very into disney princesses at this moment so this is the perfect book for her. I also purchased other step into reading level 1 books for her and she loves them as we'll. only thing is that I did not read carefully...this is a paperback. One of the pages loosened out if the binding and it is starting to look a little worn after several days (she takes it to bed with her). I duct taped it up but I will look for hardcover next time!

Sounds odd, I know, that someone would say that of a Level-1 "Step Into Reading" book, but as usual with books where the illustrations are the main feature--they're what makes this really interesting. And they are gorgeous! Being a fanatical dog lover and Disneyphile, the cover attracted me immediately. Finally, the Scottish Deerhounds from Brave get some recognition!! Excellent. I had to see the other princess' dogs. Oddly enough, the cover shows Rapunzel holding a puppy who isn't featured in the book at all. S/he resembles Cinderella's new one, so, perhaps a littermate.As it turns out, the Palace Pets game/toy line really should have been more realistic like some of these canines.The following princesses either own or simply encounter a variety of dogs in this easy-reader:Jasmine observes a little stray brown/tan mutt balancing a bone on his nose in the middle of the bazaar. Whether or not she adopts him or finds him a home is not addressed, but he at least looks happy enough with his life of street performing for food.Tiana meets a plump little red mixed-breed pup (probably part Cocker spaniel?) while out shopping. S/he tugs at her dress, then takes a nap in her lap. Again, we don't know whether the dog winds up being Tiana's or what, but she certainly looks very taken with him/her ("it" from now on, since genders aren't revealed.) The most traditional ways for a princess to obtain pets, it seems, is either to randomly find and adopt a stray, or to receive one as a present--typically from her prince/husband.Ariel's is an example of the latter. Taking a cue from Jim Dear, Eric gifts her a puppy in a ribbon-tied box. Clearly he bred Max to a female Old English Sheepdog, because this puppy is Max's spittin' image. Adorable! I wonder what she named it. (That goes for all of them. If only this were a Level-5 or something with more detail.)On the cover, Merida's got two lovely Deerhound puppies--probably either Fergus' two hounds when they were young, or the offspring or one or both of them. My headcanon gives Merida a Deerhound pup named Grady, born of the two adults (Rhona and Evander), as well as an Irish Water Spaniel named Bedelia. So, in the book, Merida and Angus come upon a pup rolling in a mud puddle, and she takes him inside for a bath.The dwarfs return home to find Snow White tickling a surprise new pet--a brown/tan little mixed-breed pup.Adam/Beast is looking beastlier than ever these days. He must be taking a page out of Gaston's book and eating five dozen eggs a day, approaching the size of a barge. Gaston just wasn't huge enough for Belle's taste. Anyhow, he has another awesome surprise for her. Some dude is giving away his three Pug puppies, and she gets to choose one. The other two appear to be adopted by an older Chip and one of his sisters. I had imagined her getting one of the loads of French breeds, but somehow a Pug suits her. Mulan and Pocahontas would be thrilled for her.Rapunzel discovers a "fluffy" (but it's not very fluffy) white puppy in a patch of flowers, and returns it to its apparently stray (collar-free) parents and littermates, who're living on a patch of straw beside some building in town. Because she's got the flower-embellished, braided-up magical infinite blonde hair instead of her true brown, we know that this happened during the "in town" scene in the film. So at that point, she definitely wasn't able to adopt the family, and I doubt there was a local animal shelter. But in happy little books like this, the strays all look happy and in good shape, and are likely treated well by most people in the area. These puppies are a mix of numerous breeds I've guessed at based upon the parents' appearances, which are quite cool.My favorite entry in this book besides Merida's Deerhounds is Aurora's. By some logic or random selection, she now has two Whippets. (Well, since they're referred to as puppies, I suppose they could be young Greyhounds, but they really look like Whippets. Maybe they're 11 months old or something.) These delightful sighthounds enjoy romping in the grass with her woodland-critter friends and chasing sticks. Awesome.Prince Charmin' further charms his Cindy with a new little pal for Bruno--a fawn-colored, "colorpoint"-patterned mix.It's just a shame that Elsa and Anna are still too new to be included in a lot of the princess stuff; I'd have LOVED to see them get some palace pooches.

Purchased this book as a gift for my neighbors daughter. When I asked her what she wanted, her reply was, "A PUPPY"! Knowing I couldn't buy her an actual dog, I set out to find books regarding puppies for her. She immediately started reading & flipping through the pages. Excellent book for any princess or puppy fans.

I guess it is my fault. I did not look at the number of pages before I bought it. it is not something I would order again. Also I could not get my Kindle Fire HDX to read it.

I bought this for my niece and she loves it. She really wants to read and this book is helping. I've shown her how to recognize certain words to pictures on the page and she can now identify on her own. She is just about able to read a full page without help.

I use this book (actually the older version) for a class I teach on laboratory management. Each week the students read a chapter, write 2 pages on their thoughts about what it means to them (not a book report) and then we discuss in class and work through the exercises in small groups. Negotiations, we do a couple of cases back and forth. The results are very good, with multiple students realizing the importance of self awareness etc. It helps to actually work in small groups and use this book with each other, using the feeling words etc. Then when the real life scenario comes up, they are more prepared with a better response.

Innovators are great at innovating. But, in business or academics they are also often expected to be managers, teachers, mentors or even leaders. These are not areas of natural interest to many innovators and, as a consequence, they do not succeed and their organizations suffer as a result. Carl Cohen leads the reader through the challenges often faced by these innovators and provides wonderful insights into how to help them and their organizations be more successful. This is essential reading for any enterprise where innovation matters.

The authors did a good job compiling ideas that are helpful for scientists at all levels. It has several techniques for effectively managing meetings, dealing with one's research group, etc. The book provides proven management techniques to be used in different situations.There are few points that I found disagreeable. Throughout the book, the authors portrayed researchers with Asian names as bad examples or victims. In addition, the book is not gender-neutral. Finally, some of the ideas such as to ignore abusive comments and put-downs by others in a meeting and instead focus on the task to accomplish may work in many professions, but I doubt how many scientists will buy that.
