This is easily the best book on Shinto out there. This book avoids the major pitfall of works on Shinto: that this is a timeless "way of the gods," the unchanging (or little changed) indigenous religion of Japan. Shinto has a very long past, one that reaches back to the dawn of Japanese history. However as a living religious tradition, Shinto was reinterpreted at various major historical watersheds. These reinterpretations have drawn richly using preexisting religious practices (both native and "foreign"), incorporating new elements and reconfiguring older beliefs (often during periods of political upheaval). The net result has been various "reinventions" of Shinto tradition which reflected pressing needs and historical practice. The major points of change are located at the dawn of the classical era (when the supposedly untainted myths were recorded), the medieval (when an independent priesthood was worked into the samurai's political order), and the dawn of the modern era (with the emergence of state Shinto). The Shinto that exists today must be seen as the product of these epochal upheavals, and how we see Shinto is through the lenses of these transformations. This does not make Shinto somehow "inauthentic," as such changes are a part of every living religious tradition.Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of this book is the balance it strikes between analyzing the various reinventions of this religion, and exploring centuries of tradition which define this thing we call "Shinto." While Shinto may be a presentist reinvention tradition, those traditions are tangible and have a rich history extending back over a thousand years.

This book is really well written! I've been waiting for this book to be released and started reading it as soon as I got it. If you're a Chloe Fan, Dance Mom fan or just want a great read I'd suggest this book. Awesome job Chloe! You've done an amazing job on your first book. I can tell this will be the first of many more books to come !

Chloe Lukasiak is inspiring! Even at her young age of 15 (when she wrote this book), she reminds us that hard work and determination can take you far in life and on the dance floor. The book is written in a very engaging manner that will appeal to tweens, teens and adults. In this book Chloe gives sound advice on how to handle bullying by kids and adults, finding support and inspiration to achieve your dreams and never giving up. I enjoyed the many personal and behind the scenes of Dance Mom's photos, her poetry and her writing style filled with humor. I plan on purchasing more copies for others in my family. I hope Chloe Lukasiak continues writing. For a young lady of now 16, her life experiences give her wisdom well beyond her years.

These days, it is so refreshing to read an intelligent, well-written book from someone like Chloe, a little girl who grew up on TV and is known all over the world yet balances her celebrity life with an everyday life grounded in good values and thoughtfulness. Even with a ghostwriter, Chloe's voice and warm excitement shine through. While there are parts about the fun, fashion, travel, and red carpet events, it's more like she's invited you home to meet the family. I loved reading about her time filming Dance Moms, especially the heart-warming stories about the other girls. Beautifully designed and illustrated, containing super-rare photos, and absolutely overflowing with love and gratitude toward her family, friends and fans, this book shows her joy in life and appreciation for the opportunities she has to make a difference in the world.

This young lady really has overcome some interesting challenges, unique to the industry she's in, along with being surrounded by awesome people who've kept her completely grounded.She's done a great job on capturing Chloe'isms, which only she can do, and sharing snippets into her life.Grab a copy for yourself and for all of the young ladies in your life. Totally worth it.

This book reflects what we as fans already knew. That Chloe is a talented mature kind young woman who is well beyond her years. She is so humble and grateful and brimming with love for all those who have been less fortunate in this world , it’s amazing. The book is a fast read and a wondersful uplifting piece of writing for young people who struggle with being comfortable in their own skin.

I received the book today, and couldn’t put it down! It’s absolutely uplifting, filled with tidbits of life stories, photos, doodles, and lots of “Chloe” advice. It’s a book I plan to reorder for other family members!.

I have followed this young lady since she started Dance Moms. I was very upset when she was forced to leave before the show ended. As it turned out it was the best thing that happened to her because she has grown into a very intelligent and beautiful young lady. Most of all she is a great role model for all young people. They say people are born with an older soul, meaning they are wise beyond their years. I totally think Chloe is one of those people. Her ideas and ways of dealing with life are very much older than any of her age. I am most inspired by her ability to overcome her shyness to become a very outspoken person for good things. I really would have to write a book to say all the things I respect about Chole but for now, I would suggest buying this book for your kids and grandkids and hope and pray they turn out like her. Credit is given to Mark and Christi Lukasiak for being such great parents and supporting her all the way. I will be very interested to see the path Chloe takes in life.

My girl is an avid reader and she did not enjoy this. She won’t finish it.

This is a great guide for anyone planning a visit to Scotland to see Outlander filming locations. There is a lot of great information and some really great photos. I enjoyed reading the book even though I don't see another trip to Scotland in my near future.

I expected the book to be a bit thicker but the photos are beautiful there’s just not s lot to it

After having visited Scotland this fall, it was fun to revisit it through these pages. Good information, if you want to visit.

This book was a lot smaller than I'd anticipated (45 pages). It was interesting to see the buildings and areas which had "stood in" for locations in the books, but I would have liked more details and more photographs.

This book features the significant Scotland locations used in the STARZ production of OUTLANDER. It shares photos of the actual location, and also shows the same place as seen in the TV show. As we are traveling to Scotland this spring on an Outlander tour, I love that I can take it along with me during my travels. A must for any Outlander enthusiast!

I'm an Outlander'ofile and found paging thru this book a delight. All sorts of pictures and stories about the filming locations with tid bits about the different scenes. If you enjoy knowing more about Scotland and are an Outlander "idiot" like me - this is a kick in the pants read for sheer pleasure!

If you are an avid follower of the "Outlander" Series, this guide gives some great background on the places used in the story. If you're planning a trip to Scotland as a fan, this will give you some great ideas of where to go. It is well written and there are some great photographs as well.

The book covered all the places I wanted to know about, with good information and good color photos.

Planning an extensive driving tour thru Provence, and I needed a large-scale PAPER map so that I could easily highlight place names and write notes. This is a scale of 1/200,000 which is perfect, as its large enough to show much detail. Beautifully done with mileage, travel times, important places to see, and locations of gas stations.

This map and the other Michelin maps that we ordered for regions of France are very detailed and very well done. But, to find your way through the back roads, a GPS is far better. The GPS provides warning of how far away the turns are, and there were a lot of then. We would not have traveled as extensively through the smaller communities and out-of-the-way places with only maps and the traveling that we did would have been far more frustrating with just the maps. I have always liked maps and thought of the GPS a nonessential but am now an enthusiast.Some of the reviews mentioned that the maps were large and awkward in the car but we had no problem in that regard.

Nice map, but was a map of several countries, including France. Had wished for map of France only with several inserts of cities of France. It was a nice reference - hard to tell toll roads, ended up using map as a reference and our GPS more. Easy drive from Zurich to Dion, then looping to Annecy (lovely town). Passed thru several small downtowns of (about 4 American blocks) towns. No stop signs, nor lights, just round circles (round a bouts), GPS helped a lot - many towns listed future towns on direction arrows - which is where this map helped! Hit a construction in France, ended up a rural hill - so GPS nor map helped, glad I caught a glimpse of road before GPS switched to new route. But if you get lost, most roads loop back to main road. Also if use nontoll roads plan extra 2 hours for longer legs of trip (As in Zurich to Dion, France). Also - on the GPS non toll route - HARDLY any cars on road - Awesome!! Tip: Always keep a 1/2 tank - gas stations hard to find, non in 1 block towns (ha), and several were closed. Also suggest carry cash - had hard time getting code to take on our credit cards with chips at stations. Also many have diesel, so make sure you study type needed. I believe we used something with a 95e in it. "Gasal is Diesel - and green handle is what you want. But ask someone to be safe. Hints - check with hotel on free downtown parking hours. Get the smallest car you can - many parking spots were tight- not unusual to see side windows pulled in, and leave room at back if back in, just in case person next to you is close in garage and you need to climb via trunk to get into car. ha Another hint: heard 2 horror stories of Eurocar rental - incorrect size for large family- they had to come back the next day, another family had to go to 3 DIFFERENT Places to track down their rental car. Most rental cars are stick shift.

The map is fine and was marginally helpful on our recent trip. However, as other have commented previous on the Michelin maps - it is huge! Very difficult to manage in a car. Parts of the area covered are represented on both sides of the map, so that is confusing, too. Don't know if I'll use this style map again.

This detailed road map saved us from getting lost daily, during a recent trip to Brittany, especially because cellular service on our otherwise smart-phone was non-existent in many small villages and back roads. Well worth buying ahead of time!

We always buy maps for our intended vacation destinations months before the trip. We study the entire region and along with guide books choose one particular area as a focal point. The Michelin Regional Maps are extremely useful in helping us make this decision and to see the interesting sites within short distances for us to fan out and explore. After our daily trips, my husband highlights the routes that we have explored and the map then becomes a keepsake. Love them.

This should be labeled western Loire Valley, only. Cuts off Saumur and barely covers Tours. I recommend Michelin maps, but wish I didn't overlook some previous comments that mentioned that this map does NOT cover the entire Loire Valley.

Useful in planning our trip. Disappointing that it only covers the western portion of the valley. I needed to order the map for Central France to plan for our trip. Has good detail, with route names and driving distances. Large to use in the car--but most maps are if not folded to reveal smaller areas.

I love to garden and have numerous gardening books, but this is the one I refer to over and over when I am planning and preparing to plant! The planting time chart in the front of the book is worth the price all by itself! It is an easy to read chart for time frames of planting each vegetable - actually two charts, because one is for spring and one is for fall. It is based on average freeze dates, so it is easy to determine the ideal time for your specific area. It even has a listing of multiple cities in various southern states showing the dates for freeze probability at 10%, 50% and 90%. Then, of course, there is the planting information about specific vegetables, herbs, and fruits. This is an all-around, get-your-hands-in-the-dirt gardening guide. It is not just an armchair gardener book. I have some of those, too, and enjoy reading them, even lend them to friends and family. I am not willing to lend this one, which is why I bought another copy. I gave this copy to my daughter who is getting into gardening. She lives nearby, but we will both need this book at the same time. She can borrow some of the others I have, but not this one!

Fabulous information for the beginner and the experienced southern garden. Particularly like the planting charts and suggestions for vegetable varieties.

This book is very helpful if you already have a basic knowledge of gardening and need specific advice on unique needs of the southern garden climate. I will definitely be referring back to it over and over.

This entertaining book recommends plants that grow well in my area. It also tells me when to plant seeds of various plants. I've just started my garden and am looking forward to great success!
