I first read Love's Executioner a few years ago and was so taken with it, I've recommended it dozens of times. Recently, I listened to the audio version Love's Executioner: & Other Tales of Psychotherapy, which was great (it also includes an interesting interview with Irvin Yalom) and I heard some things I hadn't picked up when reading it. In fact, I realized this work has such depth, it is worth revisiting again and again. What makes it so good? It contains the wisdom of a master existential therapist, who is also a gifted storyteller (Love's Executioner is non-fiction, based on real case histories, but it reads like fine fiction).And what is existential psychotherapy? It begins with the idea that our fundamental psychological dis-ease results from difficulties baked into human existence, such as our fear of death and our ultimate aloneness. Or as Yalom writes in Love's Executioner prologue: There are "four givens that are particularly relevant to psychotherapy: the inevitability of death for each of us and for those we love, the freedom to make our lives as we will, our ultimate aloneness, and, finally, the absence of any obvious meaning or sense to life. However grim these givens may seem, they contain the seeds of wisdom and redemption. I hope to demonstrate, in these ten tales of psychotherapy, that it is possible to confront the truths of existence and harness their power in the service of personal change and growth." *That paragraph captures the core blueprint of the book, but if you stopped there you'd be missing out. Like all great artists, Yalom brings those essential issues to life so you feel them in your bones. He stops our breath through the stories, intimate details, and insights into the lives of some of his extraordinary patients (or sometimes "ordinary"ish, but made extraordinary in Yalom's capable hands). The tender truth often shimmers in Love's Executioner. We see the art of psychotherapy, and thus living, practiced by a master, both as a writer and a guide to how to midwife psychological wisdom.Other reviewers here have pointed out that Love's Executioner is must reading for therapists and those undergoing psychotherapy. This is true, and Yalom, is understandably a rock star among therapist, not just for his skillful prose (he is also an accomplished novelist), but his textbooks that have been read by at least two generations of therapists. But it would be a shame if this masterwork--and I do believe it's fair to call Love's Executioner his master work--weren't read by everyone. For it has something for everyone: whether you like fiction or non-fiction. Lovers of fiction get the storytelling and intimacy of a great novel. Readers of non-fiction know these are stories of real patients and get actionable take-aways. As noted, I plan to reread or relisten to this book periodically, knowing I'll pick up something new each time. Books don't get much better than this.* In Love's Executioner, Yalom notes that he doesn't belong to a psychological school of thought. Since I see existential psychological dilemmas as true for everyone, regardless of your philosophical or religious beliefs, I tend to agree with him. That said, I do believe this is still an outlook, and that there will be others with a different outlook that will consider existential therapy a school of thought. -I originally got a promotional/review copy of the audiobook, but think it is so good, I got extra copies and have given copies to friends and coworkers.

I agree with all the positive reviews, but need to say this about the story of Betty or "Fat Lady". In the Afterword of the latest edition, Dr. Yalom defends himself and explains that he was truly honest about his counter-transference and learned a great deal from Betty. Here I would say that Dr. Yalom needs to go even further in his self-examination. My feeling is that he learned to relate to Betty as a human being ONLY because she kept losing weight, and by the end she was almost at 150 pounds - which is not obese even if she is a shorter woman. If Dr. Yalom were honest with himself, he would have to consider the possibility that he, in fact, did not learn to see fat women as human beings. And, most importantly, that he taught Betty that the only way to get a man to love her is for her to be a certain weight. She might end up in a life-time struggle with eating disorders and poor body image that Dr. Yalom, not only did not resolve, but made worse.

A friend posted a praise of Yalom's last book on facebook. Low and behold, I checked him out on amazon and decided to read Love's Executioner first: best decision ever. The book is so "honestly and openly" written that I believe it would be a good mandatory reading material for all new students in the field. The stories are fascinating, but his approach to psychotherapy and his "unconventional" human approach to each patient are what gets you. Thank you sir. And I sure loved the iast sentence of your epilogue the best. You really made me laugh. Thank you.

Fascinating stories of therapeutic relationships. Yalom writes with refreshing honesty, revealing his own struggles with preconceptions. He provides hope for elders who are considering therapy. If you are obese, disregard the negative reviews centered on Yalom’s prejudices. Find out for yourself and don’t miss this treasure.“If we stare too hard into the past, it’s easy to be overcome with regret. But now the important thing is to turn towards the future. We’ve got to think about change. What must not occur is that five years from now you look back with regret over the way you’ve lived these coming five years.”

Yalom’s clearly rooted in a psychoanalytical approach, but adjusted his modalities to best fit the client. Often his inner thoughts were shocking and amusingly relatable which was surprising and comforting. He often took the time to explain his techniques and thought process which I found helpful as a practicing licensed therapist. Some of the chapters were objectively offensive (client that had slept with therapist) and some subjectively offensive (he disclosed a dislike for obese women), but his growth his admirable and his epilogue describes his regrets and reflects on how times have changed. It’s a quick read and I think one worthy of anyone interested in pathological analysis. He also shared some powerful metaphors.

I am a big fan of Aaron Ra's videos, podcasts, etc., and I have watched several of his video series of the same name, but find that I like the book MUCH better than the videos... (which is odd, because I usually am more of an auditory learner) I think it's because in the videos, Aaron moves SO quickly through the material that it's hard to catch everything, and a lot of it went over my head. With the book, I can take all the time I need to read, re-read, highlight, make notes, etc. (although, I gotta say, the book has so much GREAT material in it, that I've got so much highlighted that I can't go back and find things, because I'm sure I've got well over half the book highlighted, so far! LOL!) As a former fundamentalist/evangelical young-earth creationist home-schooler, this is truly a breath of fresh air. Aaron gives very good arguments and evidence to back up all of his assertions. Great book!

If Dan Dennet, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and the late Christopher Hitchens are the 4 Horsemen of Atheism. . .Aron Ra is the Horse who gallops the Gospel of Atheism into battle -- seriously, look at this dude's hair. Awesome as f***.I was raised to believe EVERYTHING put out by Answers in Genesis (mom was friends with Ken Ham).Aron has done more to teach me about the fact of evolution than any other voice I've listened to -- even Professor Dawkins himself!

Fundamental falsehoods video series is a must-view for anyone interested in understanding the deception present in the systematic attacks levied against science by those motivated by religious ignorance.This book expounds on the video series with even more scientific information. The existence of the Dictyostelium discoideum organism, for instance, was fascinating and a very interesting link between single cellular and multi-cellular organisms. It was not described in detail in the video but described very clearly in the book. I found the transitional fossil chapter and others particularly helpful. The only criticism would be lack of pictures - perhaps future editions could have those.

If you're familiar with Aron Ra, this book is largely a review of his brilliant "Foundational Falsehoods of Creationism" series. It's more in depth, and covers some new ground, but the roots tie into that series and it's well worth the read. He gets into things a bit deeper and throws in several interesting, new pieces of information.If you're not familiar with Aron Ra - I recommend this book even more highly in addition to the video series on YouTube as well as his "Refuting the Irrefutable Proof of God" series on YouTube. He is exceedingly good at taking immensely complicated scientific material and making them accessible to even the most basic people in terms of their scientific knowledge or ability. He is also incredibly good at pointing out what believers get wrong about their own texts and making them accessible to lay minds as well. For believers, I strongly suggest you read it. He addresses every claim made in support of creationism, or "creation science" - and puts them to bed with bullet proof, ironclad arguments and a well rounded body of facts that anyone can observe or check the veracity of. Unless you're the sort who would say 2+2=7 you cannot walk away from his series on YouTube or this book and still believe in creationism or indeed religion as a whole. It's impossible unless you're patently dishonest or simply care more about what you want than what is reality.A side note - you should also check out his science series. It's entirely apart from his "science versus religion" videos. However it's incredibly interesting as again, Aron Ra is very good at taking even the most complex matters of science and making them accessible and understandable no matter how basic your background in science may be. He also does a very good job of keeping it interesting and entertaining even for those who have high level degrees in the subject.

While you are reading Foundational Falsehoods of Creationism you can imagine Aron Ra speaking at some conference detailing the harm of child indoctrination. The video series that this book is based on is also excellent and everyone who wants to become more educated in the facts of evolution should youtube it. This book is excellent and we need many more people who are as passionate as Aron Ra to spread reason and logic and science to the world. We need to stand up to any organization that spreads anti-science messages and this book is a basis of knowledge that helps to refute this religious dogma. Well done Aron!

Speaking as a big fan of AronRa's YouTube channel, I was very optimistic about the book's content after first hearing about it. Unfortunately, after reading it cover-to-cover, I found it to be a mixed bag.This dense non-fiction tome is packed full of information presented in a colloquial, easygoing style similar to the content of the YouTube videos. However, while I can personally vouch for the veracity of 99% of the statements in the book due to my own research, there's no bibliography, and citations are limited to the occasional reference in the text, in the vein of "in X author's book Y, published in year Z," which undermines the book's professional credibility. In addition, the book is absolutely riddled with typos and "spell-os," ranging from simple letter transpositions ("ancient rock cravings") to more noticeable mistakes, such as rendering the name of Irish comedian Dara Ó Briain as "Darren O'Brien."In conclusion, while I do recommend this book to any fan of AronRa's YouTube channel, it was disappointing in terms of research and production quality. It's a decent book, but with a little more research and polish, it could have been great.

I bought this for my book library and was impressed. Years ago, my son was deep in the woods and got a severe earache. Someone told him to put some of his own urine in his ear...... he hurt so bad he'd try just about anything. And to his amazement it worked.

I got this book from listening to Andrew Norton Webber. I'm glad I have it in my library.Everyone should look into this. It's the mother of all healing Ayurvedic systems. The healing is real and I can't ever look back. Think of it. Ask your grandmothers about this, they may remember. What did we all do before Poison Pharma came along? we used plants, fungi and oh yes, our own sacred healing waters. Our own perfect medicine. Our body 'vehicles' are amazing machines (when treated right). Clearer mind, spot gone, whiter teeth, softer skin, hair, stronger clearer finger & toe nails, energy, balance, regularity, clearer skin, acne gone, toe fungus gone. I"ve only been doing this for 30 days!

This book is okay but not quite what I expected,the information on urine therapy is limited.I would recommend Martha Christys book Your own perfect Medicine.

It is a 152 pages book, translated from German to English in 1999. First original book was published in 1995. It is easy to read and understand. It gives a lot of treatment results and applications by the actual users, covering various ailments from head to toe.

An eye opener. Never thought this thing called urine can cure a variety of health disorders. How come we never heard anout its healing attributes? This book imparts the methods of curing infirmities using urine internally and externally. I highly recommend this book.

I am very impressed with the quality of writing and information to the point of inspiring me to purchasing more books by this author.

Marijuana tends to consume all the food you’re willing to give it, but this doesn’t mean you should keep feeding it. During the vegetation (growth) stage, feed the plant every two to three days. When the plant’s foliage growth begins to slow down, then you should also cut back on the fertilizer. Feeding the plant encourages foliage growth and decreases the amount of resin in the buds, so stop feeding your plants a week or so before you harvest them.

Nothing new or exceptional about this book. You would be better off watching a few YouTube videos. Pictures along with the descriptions would have been very helpful. It was a lot shorter and less detailed than I was hoping

It was a nice starter book. But I would have liked a more in depth look for the price. It could have described the difference between male and female plants and how to polinate them. Or how stress effects the gender.

this book is amazing. i grew up on dover books. they were something that my family could actually afford. i am an artist and find inspiration from these etchings. and they’re royalty free you can use them for anything!

Just as advertised this book has a huge variety of plants to work with. We will be using this book for tattoo reference and it is perfect for this purpose. The images could be used pretty much as is for blackwork. The only critique I have is the paper isn't the highest quality. I wouldn't recommend it for a "high traffic" library. There are two artists in our household so this won't be the case for us. The paper quality is the same for any paperback book you will buy on Amazon, the prices are GREAT but the paper is a little easier to tear. It's a trade off I can easily live with. Great buy for a quieter library.

Gorgeous large illustrations, neatly organized by categories. LOVE how every item is conveniently identified in the index (maybe a handful of the 2400 are labeled unidentified)--very easy to look up the item in the index, it's organized by page and each illustration is assigned a number. I also love how there's extra sections for plant related stuff like ornate pots, green houses, and plants as frames like borders. Overall, excellent purchase.

I love the Dover Pictorial Archives Series and this book is a fine example of the copyright-free images that Dover offers in these books. Jammed full of beautiful black and white drawings in fine detail this could be the one book in your library to cover all your botanical needs. But it won't be. Once you see this book you'll want to add more Pictorial Archives Series books to your library.

Dover at its best: Clean, crisp line art and etchings drawn from many royalty-free sources. Exoticism and botanical accuracy combined. Useful in advertising or graphic art.

I use this book to copy plants and flowers for artistic purposes and have used a few already. There are some really beautiful drawings and you can see all the details that go into that particular one. Never run out of ideas!

When I purchased this book I had a preconceived notion about what I was going to get. I already had a big binder of different assorted pieces of music theory I had retrieved from the internet. I thought this book would be a nice little basic assortment of all the necessities. I thought I would buy the book and have all I need in one nice organized paperback. Well, I realize that it was a bit foolish to expect that.THE CONS: Having gone through the book I think it is only fair to give a good “heads up” as to what you can expect. I think Mr. Vai was trying to furnish the beginning guitarist with a good introduction to music theory. Unfortunately, I don’t think this was achieved in all the chapters. Steve Vai is obviously very accomplished and I don’t think something like his very advanced understanding of something like polyrhythms would be helpful to the novice. I noticed a few areas like this. There were times that the content was presented that required some understanding of theory in order to know what the author is driving at. If you have absolutely zero knowledge of music theory you may need to take the book to a guitar teacher for assistance.It is also good to keep in mind that this book was constructed to present the reader with “the basics”. The term “basics” is a subjective term. You may think the basics will cover learning how to apply scales in an improvised jam session. Perhaps you want to learn theory so you can write songs or compose. This book doesn’t really tackle that. There is a chapter called composing music. But, this deals with teaching simple musical definitions for elements like tempo, dynamics, and articulations.THE PROS: The good news is that Mr. Vai’s interpretation of “the basics” is very extensive. I can guarantee you will learn something if you buy this book. Even if its nothing more than reading the suggestions given in the chapters based on how to grow as a guitarist. If you're a new guitarist I think the chapter on reading guitar tab would be helpful. I also really like the chapter on chords. Particularly, the Chord Symbol Dictionary chart. It seemed to cover and explain every possible chord combination with an explanation of how it is constructed. Additionally, Mr. Vai offers up very good advice on how you should start when learning scales, or at least how he went about it.Additionally, if you come across something like a weird time signatures or if you heard someone talk about microtones and have know idea what that is, this book can come in handy in attempting to sort that out for you if you don’t know what it is.In conclusion, I would imagine that one would have little trouble retrieving most of the book’s contents from the internet. But the book does have one thing going for it. That would be the personal touch of Steve Vai.

Love Steve Via, and this is a fantastic book on theory. If it was $12.99. You can find this same info in many other guitar / music theory books for less than $15. It may not have the cachet of Steve Via's name on the cover, but I don't need that to bone up on my music theory.

As the book's subtitle says, this is a book for "Basic Music Theory". I would say this book is more of a glossary for basic music notation and theory. The book answers the "what is it?" question of musical vocabulary but doesn't really delve into the "how to do it" aspects of guitar playing. If you already know concepts like time signature, sixteenth notes, bass & treble clef, staccato, pianissimo, triads, modes, circle of fifths, etc. - then this book is too basic for you. Unfortunately I should have researched this book more before purchasing it. The book is well put together and Steve Vai is very articulate in explaining each musical concept, but I was hoping the book would be more about how to APPLY these elements into your guitar playing. It's more of a reference book for music theory terms and no so much about improving the mechanics of your guitar playing technique. Which is perfectly fine, but when I saw the title "Vaideology" I thought the book would be more about the ins-and-outs of how Vai approaches the guitar from his unique perspective. In many ways the basic content of this book can be found almost anywhere online these days - you don't necessarily need Steve Vai to explain these basic music theory concepts - but it's kind of nice to have everything in an easy to read format I guess.

First impression is that I'm going to learn a lot from Mr. Vai.On the other hand, it took well over a month to get the book (didn't take them a month to take my money though). That alone pretty much sucked all the fun out of this purchase.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Maestro Vai on the Generation Axe tour in Kansas City. He changed my entire approach to my own playing, introducing me to my spiritual approach to technique. So it is wonderful that he has written and easy and readily available source for those seeking a compass in their own approach to authentic play. I would recommend this book to anyone serious about understanding their voice, themselves and their instrument.

Great book but handled/printed by amateurs. Every single page inside has a crease. Some have several. The top/ biding part of the book was bent and has several creases as well. Fortunately the content is ... awesome ... thanks, Steve.

I really like this book and feel it's easily worth the price. Being lucky enough to meet and talk with Steve Vai (at his Evo meet and greet) and of course having watched many interviews, my only hope was that his genuine way of speaking came across in this music theory book. If he could make music theory more relatable and less intimidating for me I knew it would be worth the purchase and that's exactly the case and the reason I like it so much.
