To start off with, this book has action. Yeah, there's a little bit of politicking as the hero wades thru all kinds of stuff on his quest to do the right thing for his ….ahhhh…..small city. Along the way he gets a couple of women to tag along. Interestingly enough, they aren't were-creatures. In fact, the power wielding ability is kind of minimal throughout this book and it comes down to swords, hammers, maces and knives. I should say that the good guy is a pretty badass sentient werewolf who's main enemy is some kind of super Orc. The sex scenes are pretty graphic so it's not a book for sensitive souls. At least he isn't doing some strange woman every other page. The women are strong in their own right and boss the big guy around. As I said, it's a fun book. I already bought the second one and I'll post a review for that. I'll like them until the author uses cliffhangers" . All in all, the book was pretty well handled.

this is the first book of the series and is handled well. the world building is well handled and thought out customs and such are place when needed and the main character is likeable not over powered nor are his companions I have high hope for this author in the future

Wolf Blade is fair. As a light sword-n-sorcery fantasy, it works. The main character, Rothan, is essentially a Viking who we're introduced to as a gladiator. He'd been captured by the Empire (read, Rome) and was working off his time as a very successful gladiator. Cool.The good: good plot --- escape from gladiator hell, save girl, return home. Meet new challenges and political intrigue due to crazed Jarl and Orc invasion. All solid ideas. Hot girls and pretty good action/combat scenes. All in all, a very promising beginning.The not good: Rothan is a moron. Who loses. A lot. He loses at his last gladiatorial combat (due to painfully obvious cheating). He loses his fight escaping from the city and is saved by his father's men. He loses a battle of wits with his Jarl (forcing him to take on an impossible task). He loses his argument with his father when said father is unjustly arrested. Having completed his quest, he loses his opportunity to wed the Jarl's daughter AND his opportunity to be Jarl. Then, finally, the book ends with him losing AGAIN, as he is taken prisoner by the king's servants.Rothan is a jackass who cannot see threats and has all the ruthlessness of a plush My Little Pony doll. Really? A freaking killer-Viking-gladiator-werewolf can't man up and be in charge? Who wouldn't tell the Jarl's daughter to go piss up a rope? Who wouldn't get rid of the current Jarl and take over? REALLY?I liked the beginning, so I'm hoping in book 2 he pulls his head out of his ass.

Ok the book is entertaining and engaging with good characters and good action. The author kept a good pace with the story and it was good. The problem I have with the story was the absolute worst power struggle where the author has ever major group in the world around the MC go out of their way to betray him. Overall with just a little less political backstabbing I would have enjoyed the book much more. Overall if you like Machiavelli type of world you will probably love this.

This is well written and among the the top of this genre. It is an excellent adventure story swashbuckling sword and sorcery. The erotic scenes are part of the story and fit appropriately but are still quite steamy. I was sorely disappointed there was no sequel yet. Can't wait!

Well deserving of a 5 star review. Lots of great world building, self serving characters, And no large dull moments in the story.The politics are great without being overbearing, just a fact of life the characters need to navigate, not a lecture.I hate flat characters that just serve to further the story without having individual needs. You know the types, like: here take my horse because you need to get somewhere faster, or let me do whatever you want because your the main protagonist. This story does not have that. It's great seeing a bunch of selfish bastards trying to work together (and against each other) and still the story is able to progress.And finally pacing. I hate it when the an author goes off on a tangent and losses the momentum of the story or the action. This is a great book for steadily progressing without large “dead zones”.Bravo

This is a 123-page "pamphlet", printed in a smaller format than most technical books, and with big widely-spaced text. Which means you don't get all that much content. Claiming this teaches the reader to "Learn Python in one day", and even goes further to claim the reader will "LEARN IT WELL' is a gross exaggeration, in my opinion. Read some of the other 1-star reviews for comments claiming wrong descriptions about Python terminology, the lack of Object-Orientated coverage and other gripes. I'm new at Python myself (although I've programmed for years in other languages) so I won't comment on those claims but I can state that the title/sub-title is IMO misleading. Publishers have found a big market for books with titles like "Learn XXXX in 24 Hours" or "The Idiot's Guide to XXXX", which purport to make it quick and painless to learn topics that are actually quite complex and time-consuming to learn. This is yet another example of that. It's one thing to claim that this book will enable the reader to learn an involved programming language like Python in one day but to go further and claim the reader will "learn it well" is just wrong. The book should have been called "A Short Introduction to A Few of the Basics of Python". I buy lots of computer-related books, usually older editions at bargain prices and I keep them all because my feeling is if I get one good idea out of book it was well worth the investment. But I am going to return this because I don't think it's worth the price I paid. A previews of the Table of Contents would have been very helpful here, something I'd recommend Amazon require for all non-fiction books.As an alternative check out Python Programming for the Absolute Beginner, 3rd Edition, which can be had in used copy for about the same price. The listing here has ample previews so you can see exactly what you're getting. Personally I wasn't thrilled with the whole approach being game design but at least it has 450+ pages, 12 detailed chapters (plus 2 appendices) and covers ground like OOP, dictionaries, GUI, graphics, etc. IMO, a better detail for your money.

I'm not an expert in programming but I have significant exposure to and respectable knowledge on other languages such as HTML/CSS, SQL, and C++. Reading halfway through this book, I can say that anyone who has taken a baseline programming class or have used the likes of CodeAcademy will find the material in this book very familiar.The book delivers on its promise of giving beginners a very graspable entry into programming and is able to get readers started on the very basics, from downloading the Interpreter + Python Shell to learning the syntax of the language.However, the book does not go very well past teaching the syntax and the basic functions that can be used in Python. Also something to note, as few others have mentioned, the book does not go into more complex concepts such as classes and object-oriented programming. I feel as though this book in entirety could be just one chapter in an entire book that is meant to completely teach most of what Python has to offer. The main problem here is that it teaches the reader to create very basic code that can hardly be used in today's practical applications of coding.It is a useful “pamphlet” in its own right, as a quick reference perhaps to the functions that can be used in Python, but for readers who have already been exposed to any level of programming may want to grab a book that is more in-depth and capable of teaching concepts that can’t be found online with a quick Google search. The material in this book could have easily been found on some free Python beginner guide found online.I would perhaps be okay with what the book has to offer if it costed less. I feel the book presents about $5 worth of material. Costing $11 with tax, I could have thrown in another $15 on top of that to get a real book that will get me quite a bit farther in learning Python. Perhaps only the fact that it is a book that is on a technical topic is why it costed $11 rather than $5. Maybe programming books are just costly, even at the very basic level, who knows.The bottom line is that this book is by no means useless. Credit must be given to the fact that it is indeed aimed at pure beginners who prior to this book know nothing of programming. However for real programmers trying to thoroughly learn the Python language, I cannot recommend this book for purchase.Thanks for reading and hopefully this review provides proper insight when deciding on purchasing the book.

I am a C++ programmer that wanted to start with Python programming. I purchased this book to learn the language in one day. It took me about 5 hours to read the whole book. It is nicely written book. The flow of the subjects in the book is perfect. In 5 hours I feel that I know a lot about Python. The whole book is about 120 pages, divided into 10 to 15 pages per chapter. The book covers, data types, strings, lists, tuples, dictionary, decision making, if statements, loops, etc. But it does not get in to Object Oriented stuff. Classes are not covered. I wish there was a 2nd follow up book to continue on reading into more advanced subjects.

I am in technical school and one of the things that we are learning, or are supposed to learn, this semester is Python. I have the assigned book and can't understand a word of it. So, I went looking for another course or book that spoke English and hopefully had some good examples because that is how I learn best. "Learn Python in One Day" is exactly what I was looking for and I have gotten more from this book than any of the other resources I have gone to combined. The explanations are easy to understand and the sample code for each concept is exactly the sort of thing that I need to learn. Well done.

The " I Survived" books are a huge hit in my son's second grade class. At first, I thought that he was wanting the books just to "collect" them because that seems to be the "thing" this year, but it turns out that these books have helped foster a love of history and has made required reading times much more enjoyable. I was skeptical at some of the topics being too scary for my second grader, but they are written in a way that is informative and appropriate for the age level. We especially enjoyed this one, set in the Dakota's because that is where we live and the blizzard is something we "survive" regularly during winters here.

Absolutely loved it! The characters were detailed, the setting was accurate and the story was based on actual events. This series is a great way to increase kids’ reading comprehension and builds up their knowledge of history. It helps them to appreciate the times we live in also. Highly recommend. Good for intermediate readers: grades 3-5.

It was probably my favorite I survived book I’ve ever read and that’s pretty big coming for me because I read every single one and she is probably one of my favorite authors ever if I had to read this book between one and 10 I’ll probably read about 50 definitely an amazing book if you like suspense this is definitely book for you

I enjoyed it with my 2nd grade son, we switch off reading chapters. I was intrigued enough to lookup more about the Children's Blizzard on my own. Author has figured out a formula that works, she tweaks it a bit for each book in series - but so much more interesting to read than a lot of early chapter books. Really engages my son to read and enjoy it, which is my main goal at this stage, it's a bonus that I too enjoy reading this series.

I’m in the fourth grade and I chose to read this book for this weeks literature assignment. I thought it was really good because it was interesting.Also, I felt adrenaline while reading both of the blizzard parts in the book. Overall, this was a great book to read and I highly recommend it.

Very interesting; in fact, I have bought all the ones available because they were so very good Each of these books in the series is well written and well researched and shows kids as heroes. Young boys need these books, and girls will enjoy them too. I bought two sets to give to two grandsons.

My 9 year old grandson loved the entire series. I loved it because it gave him some sense of history. He is a very good reader. I don't know the reading level, but he had no trouble.

I absolutely love this book! It has to be my favorite book of all the I Survived series! One thing, why don’t they have more books about girls? They have one!!! I just don’t get it!

This book is easy to read and takes one through the recent history of Rwanda focusing on the rapid economic and social developments that the country has experienced post-genocide. The book increased my excitement about Rwanda and the improvement in living conditions that many Rwandans have been experiencing. It has consequently increased my desire to visit the country. However, I have given this book only three stars as the writing often sounds like propaganda and contains a lot of opining by the authors. There is certainly a place for opinion, but the book doesn't make a clear distinction between supported assertions and the opinions of the authors.

Highly recommended by folks, Rwandas and ex-pats alike, who live there, work there and even from those who experienced the genocide firsthand. My organization has been in Rwanda for a couple of years and I learned many new things from this book. It changed my perspective to an even more positive one on Rwanda. The chapter detailing President Paul Kagami's "short falls" was detailed enough so that those who disagree with some of Kagami's methods and policies should be placated; this wasn't just a pro-Kagame PR piece. If all African rulers were as motivated, principled and enlightened as Kagame, even with his flaws, the continent would be completely transformed in a generation.

If you ever wondered what happened after the events of "Hotel Rwanda" or the genocide of 1994, this is the book for you. If you've ever wondered why Rwanda did not end up like Somalia, even though Somalia had Western intervention, Kagame is why. This work gives insight into both subjects.

Looking forward to reading something upbeat about Rwanda after the horrific story of the genocide and the abysmal lack of help from the international community. I understand this book outlines a plan for economic cooperation that actually helps without exploitation.

I spent two months in Rwanda this past fall, and I have quickly become a huge fan of the country. This book highlights the unbelievable turnaround of a country that has experienced horrors most cannot comprehend. If you are going to read one book about Rwanda, I would recommend "A Thousand Hills", but if you are going to read two, read Rwanda Inc. It does not gloss over the criticisms of Paul Kagame, despite his immense strengths and successes as a leader. A solid read for anyone interested in learning more about Rwanda.

The book is well written and a text book for how to develop a globally oriented nation. Rwanda is an example of a sub Saharan African nation that is moving forward, even though it has faced huge historical colonial and independence challenges.

I have been living in Rwanda since 2008, moved back from the states in the summer, but have never looked back. This book says it all, the miracle that is post genocide Rwanda. I recommend anyone that wants to learn about how this beautiful country rose from the bottom to where it is in just 2 decades.

An interesting book about how a small country is trying to make it by establishing business a promoting growth. Encouraging.

I'm a graduate student in environmental studies and wanted a summer book giving some historical context to state level Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards. Barry Rabe does a great job of revealing how the states emerged as the most powerful force in climate change regulations. This isn't a book focused on climate change per se, it's a primer on how the states have reacted to climate change, political forces, and economic volatility to craft effective legislation. While it is a fact-filled book (at times a little too dense) his writing style flows well. It was an enjoyable read while reinforcing the important influence to remember. I'm looking forward to reading his 2010 book. Although this book could be looked at as being dated (2004), it very valuable from the historical as well as legislative effectiveness perspective.

Best Easy Day Hikes for Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks is a bit misleading as a title. While there are easy hikes, some are far from it. For example, one hike is nine miles long with a 1200-foot climb while another is over 14 miles long. Fortunately, the distances and elevation changes are clearly marked in the description so it is easy to select those you are willing and able to tackle while leaving the others for the more adventurous. There are also maps for each hike but it sometimes took me a while to use them. The actual trail wasn't always well defined within the larger area portrayed on the map and I often found the trailheads especially difficult to spot. It was not a major problem as I always worked it out in the end but it is an area that could use a bit of improvement.There are 28 hikes listed and they are broken down into 5 geographic areas of the two parks. My wife and I did 2-3 hikes from each area and found the descriptions to be both helpful and largely accurate. The book is small enough to easily fit in a hip pocket and held up very well during a full week of heavy usage. Color photos would have been a nice addition but that would have made the book both larger and heavier which is not ideal for a pocket guide. Overall, this was a great purchase at an extremely reasonable price.

For less than ten dollars, one would be hard pressed to call this a waste of money, as it does provide a great deal of information on 28 different hikes throughout the park. That said, it doesn't provide much more information than the one can pick up at any of the ranger stations, [...]. Its main advantage is organization, as you're not futzing around with a bunch of double sided pieces of paper and several newsletters, trying to figure out which hike to go on and how to get there.

Used this a lot to plan day hikes and did many of the listed hikes while at Glacier in July 2008. Distances, times seemed reasonably accurate and comments a good synopsis for the trail. Doesn't rate hikes, "easy", "difficult", etc; but most in Glacier are in the easy-intermediate range anyway. Relatively small size made it easy to take along or fit in pants pocket. Trails in Glacier are well used/marked so you don't really need it during hiking, but I liked it for planning my hikes or referencing when having to change plans during the day. Maybe only thing to add are a few pictures, which can help decide if you want to take a certain trail or not.

Its construction is not as durable as one would like for a reference to carry with you while hiking, but what can one expect for that small an asking price? However, the descriptions and maps for each hike are easy to understand--even for the novice hiker. 25 easy hikes are included in the book, with distance, degree of difficulty, time required, and elevation change included. There are no pictures in the book, but still its very well done.

I saw Amar on PBS, read his book on the history of the Constitution, and was thus driven to read The Bill of Rights. Being neither an attorney nor historian, I still found this to be an excellent read. I suspect that Amar could craft a listing a postal zip codes into an enthralling book. Of course, the creation of constitutional law is a topic that sells itself (at least to me)... He uses a textual analysis. At times, it seemed that he made his point several pages earlier. Most of the time that I read this piece, I sat in front of Google and typed in a smattering of his plethora of referenced facts. The focus of his discussion is on the first 10 adopted amendments and how the 14th amendment then modified each. He mentions the others briefly. Amar might have cited books, newspapers, more speeches that would help the reader better appreciate the zeitgeist of the time and how it affected the framers of 1 - 10 and those who adopted 14. More discussion on the originally proposed 2 amendments that were not ratified and why not might have been interesting, too. I also wish that, someday, hint, Amar will take this to the next step and address current socio-political issues using constitutional textual analysis. I enjoy his work. I think that his writing continues to evolve and I look forward to future works by him.

I read this after reading Professor Amar's "The Constitution: A Biography" which is the reverse of the order in which they were written. I enjoyed that one enormously and had the same reaction here. Professor Amar does an amazing job of using historical materials and textual analysis to provide numerous insights into the meaning of the Bill of Rights. The dominant thesis of the book is that the Bill of Rights when passed in 1791 was as much to protect states from the federal government as it was to keep individual liberties intact. I was not so impressed by the textual analysis (as several of the amendments seem clearly to speak about individual liberties) but the historical work was indeed compelling. Of course I am not familiar with the entire record so cannot say what he may have left out. Then, he convincingly shows the transformation of the Bill of Rights into an instrument for protecting individual liberties in the post-Civil War amendments and the thought leading up to that. Particular insights arise in relation to the right to keep and hear arms as a fundamental individual right (which was definitely not the understanding I held or was hoping to acquire, but it's pretty convincing as Amar presents it) and the way in which the First Amendment clause on establishment of religion changed over time due to territorial expansion and the abolitionist crusade from a law that initially allowed for state religions to the point where they were eliminated. Fascinating.My biggest disappointment was that the Fifth Amendment was limited to about 5 pages, 3 at the time it was enacted and 1 at the time of Reconstruction. He characterizes the "just compensation" clause - the only Constitutional protection for private property - as something Madison "smuggled in" to the Bill of Rights. Professor Amar seems, like many academics seem, to have some aversion toward legitimizing private property, although many of the historical sources he cites list it as a fundamental right, it just seems to be one that he doesn't like being fundamental. In his afterword, in addition to discussing approvingly Bruce Ackerman's work on a "redistributive constitutional regime" effected by early 20th century amendments and Supreme Court decisions during the New Deal, he writes revealingly, "there is still room for a great book organized around concepts rather than words --'liberty', 'equality', 'democracy', 'privacy' and so forth". I guess "Property" is just another "so forth" or maybe not even a concept he wants to keep around.

This book, which mostly reads like a textbook for a class, is an excellent history of the Bill of Rights. If you are interested in Federalist v. Anti-Federalist viewpoints, as well as the distinction between Creation (Founders) and Reconstruction interpretations of the Bill of Rights. I really enjoyed this text.

This is a very important guide to understanding what happened to the efforts at civil rights reform between 1858 and 1876. After the Civil War (1861-1865) there was an effort at civil rights reform that went beyond even what Dr. King tried to accomplish, but it failed, destroyed by the US Supreme Court. This book covers what happened and it is vital to understand not just US history, but a deliberate fraud by the Supreme Court that continues to this day as they deliberately fail to implement the 14th Amendment in its original form.

Great read

Yes, Professor Amar has an opinion. However, he believes he has very good reasons to hold the opinions he does. He compares and contrasts the views held by those who framed the original Constitution and Bill of Rights with those who re-constructed in in the wake of our Civil War. You may be surprised at how well the Constitution lives without living.
