This was my third time I read this book. I was amazed at the depth of this book. The first time, it was a faith-filled page turner that could be read again, because it was written on more than one level. The second time, I could see the depth, but I was reading it with my husband, so I was interested in what he thought of it. This time, I decided to reread it before reading Elijah in Jerusalem. I can't believe all that I missed. The plot is excellent, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. On the surface, it would seem that the subject matter is dated. The book was written twenty years ago when people were speculating on what would happen at the turn of the millennium. However, Michael D. O'Brien has written a timeless story where the characters struggle with faith in the real world. Father Elijah has suffered the loss of his family in childhood and lost faith. He has experienced conversion yet he still struggles with keeping the Faith when confronted with evil. His friend, Anna has lost the Faith, because it seems incompatible with the modern world. Other characters within the Church struggle with good and evil. Ultimately, what amazed me the most was the recurring themes of free will, salvation, and trust in God rather than our own strength, especially in the face of evil. Seemingly minor characters, such as the Holy Father, Father Prior, and Don Matteo, are a great source of wisdom for Father Elijah, because they remind him that everyone, even the President of the EuroParliament, is a child of God, who was free will to love and follow God or to reject Him. We must also remember this when dealing with souls who choose evil over good causing others pain and loss. We must forgive. That is a big challenge. Realizing that we are not expected to do this without God is therapeutic. The book is so well researched and well written that I can only scratch the surface in this review. That's what is so amazing. Read the book. Read it!

This is probably one of the best works of christian (Catholic or otherwise) fiction I have read. O'Brien's knowledge of Catholicism is impressive, especially considering he has no theological background. He manages to blend history, theology, and well-written characters into a brilliant narrative that is both entertaining and fulfilling. As a hopeful author myself, I gained a great deal of insight in how to incorporate religious elements into fiction without coming off as "preachy", specifically by using real human stories to convey truth.I especially want to praise a conversion scene that takes place towards the middle of the book. I won't go into great detail since I think it should be experienced unspoiled, but this scene served to blend personal circumstance, skepticism, and mercy into a beautiful story about redemption. I had to read the scene several times to fully process it.O'Brien's works truly stand out when it comes to characters. It's difficult to describe, but he manages to blend both symbolism and realism into his characters, which is where I think several christian authors take a misstep. The priests in his work (throughout the series) are particularly well-crafted, likable, and believable. Father Elijah is a wonderful example, especially as a bridge between two different faiths (Judaism and Catholicism) in the trying times to come.Overall, this was a wonderful book that conveys truth through an entertaining, spiritually fulfilling, and believable story. O'Brien's achievements cannot be understated, and his commitment to a cause is admirable.

This is my first O'Brien, and there will be many more.While I suppose the heavy Catholic /Christian themes may put some off reading this, it serves up rich rewards to those who stay the course. The character development is dense and structured, the plot lines carry enough surprise to make for an interesting story, and the prose itself is beautiful and a joy to read.For the Christian there are the added experiences of a well-known story arch being mirrored in the novel, with an epic struggle between Good and Evil, with a charismatic but very human priest as protagonist, and generally some lovely scenes in Rome and Italy.If the Catholic setting does not disqualify you, this is a rare and powerful treat.

This was my first Michael O’Brien book, and there are things I don’t like. His conversations feel wooden, his heroes all seem to be priests (who are in short supply in Churches. That’s where they’re needed), and everything is presented from a perspective that is more than Catholic. It would have to be called Clericalist. His presentation of Vatican intrigues is, well, intriguing, though not nearly at the level of someone like Malachi Martin, who sets the standard for that stuff.With that out of the way, there are things I do like. The faith struggles that the characters have are presented in a believable way. More than that. It comes across as tender, and moving. And I was truly moved by the sequence where they find Mary’s tomb. I’d have to rate O’Brien’s strength principally in how he deals with faith on a personal level. And that alone makes it worth the read.

José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913) was Mexico's most illustrious graphic artist. For over forty years he worked tirelessly as an incorruptible and truly popular artist, illustrating cookbooks and fortune-telling books, collections of songs and riddles, periodicals and newspapers, children's books and novels, and most of all famous broadsides that were distributed throughout the country. After his death he was venerated by the artists of the new generation—Rivera, Orozco, and many others, who realized that he had both saved and renewed the art of engraving in Mexico, and incorporated much of Posada's imagery into their own work.Here are close to 300 of Posada's best engravings, all done for the printer and publisher A. Vanegas Arroyo in Mexico City. Posada worked in two techniques—engraving on type metal with a many-pointed burin and, later, relief etching on zinc. The broadsides he illustrated commemorated all sorts of occasions—disasters, political events, crimes, and miracles—or they glorified great popular heroes like Zapata. Posada was known for his calaveras—skeletons that cavorted, ate and drank, rode bicycles and horses, wielded swords and daggers, or were revolutionaries, streetcleaners, dishwashers, and almost everything else. This was traditional art for All Souls' Day, the Mexican Day of the Dead, but in Posada's hands it became extremely versatile, sometimes an instrument of social and political satire, sometimes a sympathetic portrait of a revolutionary, sometimes a comic, cartoon-like memento mori. He did engravings of murders, suicides, catastrophes, robberies, and executions, as well as of snake-men, giant snails, and other grotesques and deformation. About the Author

José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913) was Mexico's most illustrious graphic artist. For over forty years he worked tirelessly as an incorruptible and truly popular artist, illustrating cookbooks and fortune-telling books, collections of songs and riddles, periodicals and newspapers, children's books and novels, and most of all famous broadsides that were distributed throughout the country. After his death he was venerated by the artists of the new generation — Rivera, Orozco, and many others, who realized that he had both saved and renewed the art of engraving in Mexico, and incorporated much of Posada's imagery into their own work.

I was familiar with the skeleton drawings long before I had even heard of Posada and after a trip to Mexico City a number of years ago I had to learn more. In the DF we saw a museum dedicated to cartoons and many of them were Posada's. The Dover book is a good introduction to his graphics. There is a lot of political humor in his work and even if you're not too interested in what the graphics subject matter you can still appreciate his skill. His artwork is probably known all over the worls although his name may not be. Now I need to find a good biography of the man.

I teach English language arts/ humanities through a cultural lens using art as a vehicle to understand historic social issues. This book was spot on to decipher the political times Posada lived. Great buy. Artwork great commentary.

This book is a gorgeous collection of the dreamy, whimsical houses by Midcentury Modern architect Andrew Geller. Most of the houses are beach houses, but there are several year-round residences as well. Geller is famous for his sculptural houses, many of which still exist on Long Island's East End (Pearlroth House, Frisbie House, or the Frank House in Fire Island). The book also features early sketches, drawings, and personal family photos. I highly recommend this book as a gift or a treasure to add to one's bookshelf! A+

I came across this title in an Audible search and thought – that sounds like a really fun book to listen to, and maybe I’ll get some ideas about “joy activities.” Well, it turned out to be kind of the opposite. It is a scholarly work that is mostly about how the church and upper classes have systematically worked to stamp out ecstatic celebrations throughout history. However it solved a much larger problem in my life.I tend to get depressed, and in fact recently started a book and support group called Sad Is Okay, devoted to both acceptance of melancholia and overcoming depression. This book gave such an important clue as to why so many in our society are depressed. Ehrenreich documents how the “melancholia trend” that began in the late 17th century arose at the same time that the church started finally succeeding in stamping out danced religious practices. Such an important and fundamental insight as to the roots of depression!It’s also funny because I do a lot of folk dancing and rowing, both activities in which groups of people move in unison with each other, and I always find those activities to be joyful and satisfying.In fact numerous studies have shown that dancing is the single most important thing you can do to prevent dementia. So my latest thought is that maybe the worldwide epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease is due to the death of ritual dancing!In my own personal quest to end depression and loneliness, I am going to keep in mind the importance of ecstatic group rituals, and look for opportunities to promote them. Thank you, Barbara Ehrenreich, for such an original and illuminating book!

Yes, this is a well researched book about the history of "muscular bonding" among small (tribal) and large (the Roman army)groups and everything in between. This is the history of the "rave"; where it came from and why it emerged again in the 1960's after centuries of repression. Trance dancing, aka Ecstatic Dancing is how we love and bond with each other, strengthen our group identity and togetherness; and it's fun! I enjoyed reading about all the various manifestations of this natural form of human expression. It has showed up in many forms through the ages and will continue on in one form or another as long as humans inhabit this planet. Read this history and you will be inspired to give your inner dancer permission to come out and play much more often. Enjoy.

For English readers, there have been about 3 famous female authors over the past three decades; Barbara Tuchman, Doris Kearns Goodwin and Barbara Ehrenreich. The third is the only one of the trio to have not won a Pulitzer Prize, even though her works are just as good. In this one, she takes a serious look at the history of partying in Western civilization. Starting with cave art and rock art from the earliest age of mankind, the author then progresses to Hellenistic times and focuses much on Greek culture and myths. From there, the book contrasts the Greeks with the Romans, and how the former emphasized communal participation in their social activities, whereas the latter emphasized social stratification. The former was built on crowds, whereas the latter demanded audiences, a contrast that the author continues to use throughout the book. Next, the book examines the rise of Christianity, in particular drawing parallels between Jesus and Dionyses. This was very insightful. The book also covers modern festivities such as the modern-day rock concert, American sporting events, and military parades. Overall, this was quite a good sampling of human activities. Unfortunately, the book did omit or skim over some subjects of potential interest. For example, she could have compared the atmosphere at professional sporting events with that at more localized events such as high school football games or Little League baseball games. Or the modern-day US presidential conventions, or the festivities surrounding Chinese New Year in various countries. Of course all of this would only expand the book's length. For what it covered, it was worth the time and effort to read it.

Barbara Ehrenreich's DANCING IN THE STREETS is both a celebration of dancing and a condemnation of the authorities who are trying to prevent large groups of people from running amok in the interests of law and order.This wonderful book is a potted history of dance, from its roots back in the misty past, through various ancient civilizations and up through the present day. Ms. Ehrenreich conveys how natural it was to dance and how this is a knack that many of us have lost today. People who either live in Northern Europe or can trace their ancestry from that part of the world have difficulty loosening up enough to dance even for a few minutes, let alone for hours or days. And since this somewhat Puritanical attitude has pervaded the world, all of us suffer from a lack of dancing in our lives.I am in awe of how much research Ms. Ehrenreich has done for this book. Of course, dancing is not just about dancing. In the ancient past, it was used to cure people of sadness. Since the early Middle Ages, it seems to have taken on more political overtones, and people who danced often did so for reasons of social justice. In fact dancing impinged on so many aspects of people's lives from religion (where people danced to their prayers) to the military, to sports. And what is fascinating is how Ms. Ehrenreich argues that relatively recently the young men and women of the 50s and 60s who would not sit down in their seats during a rock concert, were merely reaching back (albeit unconsciously) into a Dionysian past.For those of you who have often wondered about dancing, and its various social incarnations, this book is for you. Five stars.
