too much going on for kids book

It was ok. I thought it would be more like actual projects to go out and do, but it's actually a much higher level read than that. Not great for a 7 year old. He wasn't even interested in it after opening the camera we got him. I thought when the title said "for kids" it meant 5-8 year olds. It's really more a 10-12, which I consider more pre-teen. Came on time in perfect condition though.

This book is great! OK, I'm not a kid!With that being uttered and want you all to know that this is an adorable, well written, beautifully illustrated, highly technical photographic book for KIDS!For years I have been trying to teach my children (old now) and my granddaughters the proper way to use a highly sophisticated piece of technology....the CAMERA. I actually have been successful in that endeavor (with a lot of teeth grinding). If I had this book it would have been a whole lot easier. I am presently trying to teach my eleven year old granddaughter enough of the technical and artistic aspects of photography so she can accompany me on my wilderness field trips. I gave her the book after I had read it.....she devoured it in half the time that I read it, and has been taking amazing images.....but more important she WANTS to take better images and she want to try her hand at macro and panoramas.Thank you Anne-Laure Jacquart

Cameras have become ubiquitous. Even if we don’t have a high end DSLR we probably carry around a phone that can make wonderful images. It not just adults. I saw a 2015 survey quoted on the internet from Child Guide that says that the average American child gets their first cell phone when they’re 6 years old. That means our children and grandchildren are walking around with cameras. As we learn more about photography, why not help these young people learn more about it too. Anne-Laure Jacquart has written a book, Photo Adventures For Kids, that does just that. The book is designed to be given to the child for them to work through on their own. The premise is that the child needs to help solve the mystery of photography. He/she works through challenges and assignments, collecting evidence to solve the mystery. This book does not cover the technical aspects of the camera. Setting f/stops and shutters speeds may be a bit much for even a precocious 8 or 9 year old. Rather the book concentrates on the design of the image. It helps the young photographer understand how to isolate a subject and remove distracting elements from the image. Then it delves into how cropping might give unusual, but successful, interpretations of the subject. This is followed by an introduction to some of the element of graphic design. All of these topics are presented in a fun but systematic way. The material it covers is good for all of us. The only reason I give this book 4 starts rather than 5 is that I put several of the passages into a grammar checker and the reading level was 8th grade to 11th grade. The editors recommend the book for 8-12 year olds. I haven’t had young children for a long time, but I don’t think any of mine would have worked through this on their own at 8. That’s not a big problem. Work through the topic with your young photographer. That way you will be spending time with them doing something they enjoy, and I bet you learn something along the way as well.

This is an excellent photographic reference for photographers of all ages. I purchased this for my 10-year old grandson to help him develop his budding enthusiasm for photography. Having read other reviews, I read through it before wrapping it up. Very similar to the digital photography course I took at the community college, but written so that even non-photo bugs can understand what to do.

I found this book to be very practical. It has a lot of insides that will give you more awareness about certain behaviors that robe you of personal magnetism. The challenge that I found in this book is that when it comes to exercises some times the clarity is not there, but all in all they are morethen I found in any other books, and will make you feel stronger, and ready for action. If you don't do the exercises that is probably not going to happen for you, and if you don't read the previous work about personal magnetism you also will not get the full picture.In conclusion I would say this, if your goal is to become charismatic, you do need to add this books to your library.

I mean no disrespect to the author in this review. Dedicating your life to the betterment of young people by any means is a worthy and noble cause. That being said, the very title of this book is contradicting. The information in this book is by no means how "modern soccer" is coached, at least outside of the United States. I would argue that this position specific, technical centric approach to coaching is what is crippling U.S. soccer. The author writes, "But we, as coaches, seem to get sidetracked with the other aspects of the player's game like how they fit into the tactical system of play, when we could be doing more to help them." Developing a player's understanding of a tactical system of play is getting sidetracked? This is exactly what we should be coaching through Rondos and progressive positional play exercises that develop the cognitive abilities of our players as well as their skill development. Isolated and/or position specific "drills" that have little contextual relationship to match conditions aren't developing our players' cognitive abilities because soccer is more than the sum of its technical parts. The author cites Cristiano Ronaldo's individual development at Manchester United as an example of how position-specific training can elevate a player's game. This example is misleading in that Ronaldo arrived at Manchester as an elite athlete. The training he received their only served to fine tune his skills. The youth soccer coach, assuming that is the target of this book, needs to focus on developing a team of players who recognize the multi-directional collection of angles and space and execute their game within that space at match speed. There is absolutely a need for individual skills development but much of that development will occur naturally within a cognitive approach to training.Again, no disrespect to this author but this is not modern coaching. This is the same technical centric approach to coaching that has kept the U.S. in the proverbial dark age of soccer development. I'll stop short of endorsing my chosen methodology but if you are a youth coach in the U.S. ready to make a paradigm shift, I urge you to do your research. Search for Johan Cruyff, total soccer, geo cognitive soccer, Todd Beane. If you're genuinely devoted to developing your players to their full potential, you'll know it when you find it.Good luck. The future of U.S. soccer is waiting.

This book contains nearly 60 recipes for cooking in a wok. Most people usually associate cooking in a wok with Chinese food. This book is no exception: it is dominated by Chinese recipes, but it also has a few other (international) types of dishes as well, some of which would not have occurred to me to cook in a wok.Many of the recipes are quite interesting. I have been cooking some of these dishes based on other recipes and cook books. However, the differences here are worth noting, and they often lend a new (but subtle) twist the flavors of the dishes.I own a lot of cook-books. Typically I use perhaps about 10% of the recipes per cook-book. In that sense, this book is definitely above average: I may adopt perhaps as many as 10 or 12 new good recipes from this one.

This book is too complicated, no easy recipes. Good for an advanced stir fry expert. I did not like the recipes. You can spend a lot of money on all the extra ingredients but a simple stir fry recipe is best. Everyday is a misnomer. as is simple! If you have a lot of time on your hands and money for all the extras than I guess this is the book for you. Not recommended for beginners. I returned the book.

I bought this as a gift for someone, but flipped through it just to see what kind of cool stuff it contained. This book is very informative. Not sure what kind of wok you should buy? There is a section that can help with that. Already have a wok, but don't know how to care for it? There's a section in the book that will help with that as well. Basically, everything you need to know from choosing a wok to making various recipes can be found within the pages. This book would be great for someone who is just learning how to cook, as well as the seasoned cooking veteran (no pun intended).The book itself is small-ish (but not pocket-sized). It is a paperback, but it's one of those sturdier paperbacks. The pages themselves are not thin, either, which is a plus! Though the book contains pages upon pages of useful information, tips, and recipes, the book itself really isn't heavy. I definitely recommend!

The recipes are not as "everyday" as I thought, and some of the ingredients are very hard to find. The pictures help, and the steps are fairly easy to follow.

This is not one of those encyclopedic something for everyone cookbooks but it is a very nice introduction to the vast possibilities your new and possibly, unfamiliar, cooking vessel will provide. I'm very pleased with the recipe mix this book offers--a thoughtful variety of asian classics and standard western staples with a good guide to help you transform your wok into your favorite and most indispensible cooking tool. Just bought a Lodge cast iron wok, which I love, and this book will help me love it even more.

A beautiful and well-printed book, but while the recipes aren't difficult they aren't especially simple, and most require pretty expensive ingredients that the average cook won't have close to hand (like bison meat or mascarpone cheese) so it's not exactly "every day" cooking. Pick it up if it's on sale, but if you're looking for actual simple and everyday recipes, this probably won't provide what you're looking for.

I didn't really look thru the book before I ordered it. Was again part of the birthday gift. He is a vegetarian, and most recipes in this book are "meaty". It is a very nice book and I really liked. Nice pictures and recipes aren't difficult to follow even for the amateur cook. He said he still liked it and was sure that he could modify the recipes to suit his tastes. He likes to experiment with his cooking anyway. Also, later if/when he decides to get a true wok, this book gives detailed instructions on how to care for it. Lots of good information in here.

I am new to Asian cooking and wok cookery in particular. This is an excellent book for a newbie like me. The author gives a little history of the wok, different types, how to properly season it and the recipes show just how amazingly versatile this wonderful piece of cookware can be. I would have never thought of wok spaghetti and meatballs. If you're new to wok cookery this is for you. I think even if you are and old hand at this you may find some ideas and uses you never thought of.

About the Author

Philippa Gregory is the author of many New York Times bestselling novels, including The Other Boleyn Girl, and is a recognized authority on women’s history. Many of her works have been adapted for the screen including The Other Boleyn Girl. Her most recent novel, The Last Tudor, is now in production for a television series. She graduated from the University of Sussex and received a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, where she is a Regent. In this latest chapter in the Tudor saga, glorious King Henry has receded into a bloated tyrannical child-king, fretfully trying to make sense of his marital history while his latest wife acts as his nurse. The story is narrated by Kateryn Parr, who sets aside her own hopes for marriage with her lover, to become Henry's last queen. While Gregory can only speculate about the thoughts and motives of these colourful historical characters, she does it superbly within a carefully researched historical context.Kateryn is haunted by her predecessors and tries to avoid their fatal "mistakes" yet she also finds that a living queen cannot compete with the dead Jane Seymour, mother to Henry's only living son. She even finds it difficult to deal with Anne of Cleves, who had graciously side-stepped marriage with the King, and was now a favoured member of court. In a double irony that Tudor lovers will appreciate, while Henry's previous wives were obsessed with delivering a healthy male heir, Kateryn is portrayed as terrified of becoming pregnant to Henry, because another failed pregnancy would humiliate the King, endangering her life.While Kateryn navigates these challenges and becomes a loyal loving step-mother to Henry's three motherless children, she also makes her own significant contribution to the era, translating religious passages into English. Gregory's examination of the changing church and attitudes to education, particularly for women, is extremely illuminating. Kateryn also takes the role of Regent when Henry is away at war, competently managing the country in his absence - a formidable task for a young woman who has only previously run a small estate. Overall, the book conveys the frighteningly precarious nature of life with despotic and fickle Henry - when a dearly beloved wife or friend can be banished or destroyed at any moment.

I usually love this writer...I enjoy the historical retelling reimagined and the sexual overtones of her books. The stories are usually enthralling, intriguing and interesting. This was not the case. In fact, very much the opposite. I drug myself through a little over half the book and finally I decided to give up...which I never, never do but I just couldn't take one more minute of forcing myself to read a book that I didn't care for. The subject matter was horrid and the religious discussions dragged on and on and the relationship between this Queen and Henry was just revolting. That part was captured perfectly. She has oodles of books way better than this one. Choose one of those.

The story focussing on and told from Kateryn Parr’s perspective leaps into action from the first pages. In keeping with most interpretations Henry the VIII is portrayed as a monster. The story opens with Henry’s proposal and expectation that Kateryn, a 30 year old widow and already passionately in love with Thomas Seymour will marry him. Torn between following her heart and duty to her king and her family, she identifies herself as shrewd and intelligent. As a future Queen her personality resonates more with a modern day woman’s expectations. Knowing that like before her when the attention falls upon a member of the court it is a double edged sword; making the wrong move with brutal and capricious Henry will result in death.This story should appeal to romance fiction readers, although some might consider it a bodice ripper and Kateryn too sexualised for the sixteenth century. Before Kateryn accepts her fate as Henry’s sixth wife, she commiserates with her lover, Seymour, and her sister, Nan, who reminds her of her duty to their family’s legacy and fortune. Phillipa Gregory portrays Kateryn Parr as deeply conflicted with the dead body of her late husband barely cold in the grave, her hopes of marrying her dashing lover doomed when Henry, old, bloated and grotesque, throws himself at her feet. She is not only repulsed by the very thought of marrying Henry, but is terrified that when like her predecessors she falls out of favour she will be dragged to the Tower. As Kateryn faces her fate, Gregory likens Henry VIII more to the murderous Bluebeard than an autocratic and aging monarch.Despite facing the pain of being torn from her lover’s arms, Kateryn Parr is mature and astute enough to recognise that unlike her predecessors it’s essential that she survive. Having grown up within Henry VIII’s court she is only too aware of the importance to gain the King’s favour to serve self-interest. If she must sacrifice love, in the spirit of a 21st Century woman she seeks to command influence and power. However, her ambitions place her in danger with the King’s court where she encounters enemies and must navigate a dangerous path to survive.If you enjoyed Wolf Hall, the Cousins War series and other stories from the Tudor Court novels this one should impress, and I believe surpass them.

The characters are developed so well that I am still thinking about them as real people as I write this review.I appreciated the details of country life and the little things described that only people who have lived in small Australian outback towns can fully appreciate.The complexity of the story - the “whodunit?” builds almost to screaming level by the time the truth starts to emerge. Beyond solving the brutal murder of three family members, we become immersed in other powerful stories from twenty years back that could be linked with the current crime. Or are they?This is a five out of five novel for me and I’ll certainly be looking out for Jane Harper’s future novels.

It took me awhile to get into this book. The story wasn't particularly gripping, the atmosphere was beyond depressing, and the setting was my personal version of hell...dry, hot, and brown, filled with cloying desperation. Add to that the endless talk of culling/shooting animals, and it soured my stomach.Having said that, the story does pick up. I won't say it becomes the kind of book you can't put down...it's more of a "slow simmer" kind of story. I did, however, really enjoy the way the book flashes back and the reader becomes privy to the actions and conversations which happened in the past. It's an interesting tactic and it worked well.The ending isn't a huge surprise, although I will say the author comes up with enough red herrings to throw the reader off. Unfortunately, a certain something was mentioned so often throughout the story, I knew it was foreshadowing the conclusion. It's a shame it was so obvious.Overall, a worthwhile, if somewhat slow, read.3.5 stars rounded to 4.

Aaron Falk is an Australian Federal Policeman, working in the financial investigations division and lives in Melbourne.He gets a note that ends up bringing him back to the small outback farming/sheep ranching community he grew up in. His best friend from his younger years and most of the man's family have been brutally killed and it looks like his friend might have done it.There are two stories told in this book - the murders of the family and the death of another of Falk's friends when they were teenagers - and Falk was actually suspected of killing the teen.This is a very small community caught in the middle of a two year drought and scorching hot weather. It takes very little for tempers to flare.I liked this story. I do feel it was a bit bloated and would have been an even better book with about a third less pages but it was still suspenseful and I was intrigued about the details of Australia.The author did a good job telling the concurrent stories and I was actually surprised about how each story resolved itself.I highly recommend this for mystery fans or people that like to read about Australia. This is actually the first book in the Aaron Falk series and I'm now off to read book two FORCE OF NATURE.

This debut effort by Jane Harper has been lauded as nearly perfect. And critics are nearly correct. The novel is as close to perfect as one can get in terms of plotting, character, and setting. Truly, it is a wonder to read (and I DO recommend you read it!). So why 4 stars instead of 5? I'll get to that in a moment.The story is set in a small rural town in Australia (wonderfully described....feels like you are there), Federal Agent Falk returns from his job in Melbourne to his hometown for the funeral of his childhood best friend, now dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after killing his wife and young child (leaving their infant alive, though). Small towns usually contain small minds and judgement has been passed. It's not comfortable. So it's with considerable trepidation that Falk agrees to a request from the deceased's parents to look a little closer into the deaths. This present-day mystery is cleverly woven with the last questionable death that occurred in the community decades earlier, one that Falk was suspected of contributing to.As you may have seen from my status updates, I did NOT guess the culprit until revelation was imminent in the story. And that is a very good thing (who likes a mystery where you've known whodunit for hundreds of pages before it's revealed?). Just about everything about this novel was a very good thing. Which brings us back to my 4 stars rather than 5. I deducted one star simply because in 3 or 4 months, I probably won't remember the plot or characters. Some books - even if they aren't technically perfect - just have soul. They resonate with you. You remember them years after you turned the last page and still grab them for re-reads. The Dry just wasn't one of those books.I still recommend it (highly) because of the enjoyable experience of the actual read. And you might experience more "soul" in it than I did.
