OK. This book is very dry and I'm surprised that a fellow as well lauded as the author writes in such a mish-mash manner. He needed a good editor to help him tell the Capital story the way it should have been told.But I'm glad I read the book to learn more about the original driving personalities and culture of the company that has remained under the radar for years. Of course, since the Big Recession 'Capital' has undergone a re-organization and many of the old stalwarts are retired or side-lined, the company has been streamlined, and the 'money management by committee' scheme has been redesigned, so admittedly the book is dated.But it's still a good 'inside' look at how one regional money management company grew to become one of the biggest and most respected international investment companies in the twentieth century. And the book is an informative insight in to the differences among various fund management companies and their various philosophies with regard to serving their clientsIf you are investing a significant amount of money, your own or other people's, in managed or indexed stock funds, it's a good book to know about.

Good history on a great company. I was there in 1969 when it was run by Jonathon Lovelace. Glad it prospered; it was a good company to work for.

Worthwhile read for someone interested in Capital Group. Provides an historical account (lot of detail) of how the firm and it's philosophy were founded. Most useful for someone interested in interviewing or investing with Capital Group.

As expected

Capital, the parent firm of American Funds, is one of the finest business organizations in American Business. This book was written by an index fund /no-load proponent who was looking to debunk American Funds (which are neither indexed, nor no-load) and instead he (Ellis) discovered their exceptional values, performance and pricing. This story is fast-paced and highly interesting, both to Advisors and clients.

As a user of Lightroom 3, not Creative Suite, I took a chance that this book would provide some good details on Lightroom. It exceeds my expectations by a wide margin. Probably 95% of this book is directly applicable to Lightroom; the only significant deviations are in the file management when Camera Raw is under control of Bridge or Photoshop whereas in Lightroom some of the file management features don't exist, or are covered in the Import function. A few other minor differences don't detract at all from the applicability of this book to Lightroom 3.The organization, clarity of writing, and the full round trip from big-picture overview of concepts to the details of *how* to do operations are just magnificently done. While this is a book on specifically Camera Raw 6, the first couple of chapters are broad applicability to any digital photographer who wants to understand where the data in a digital image comes from (it's not very intuitive), how it is processed within the camera (surprisingly complex), and what needs to be processed externally and how the data and metadata in the image affects all steps of image processing. The tradeoffs of RAW vs. processed/compressed images (JPEG) are well addressed in a reasonably unbiased fashion.I have about half a dozen books on various topics related to Lightroom, color, workflow, and so on, and Real World Camera Raw (RWCR) far outshines all of them in both breadth and depth of useful, practical techniques. Every feature of Camera Raw is covered, not as a checklist but with very clear emphasis on the things that are most important and always within the context of why and what is going on with the data. Short passing mentions of less important or duplicated functions don't clutter the book and keep the reader focused on the key concepts and techniques. The goal of the book is to equip the reader with the conceptual framework, the understanding of the important questions and tradeoffs, all the way down to the specific techniques, that make for the best possible image file to feed into the next stage of processing. In the case of a Lightroom user like myself, that "final stage" is actually the end result -- the printed, displayed, or shared image, so to a large extent RWCR is an absolutely outstanding "Missing Lightroom Manual", far and away the best I've seen.I particularly enjoyed the clarity of discussion of how the basic tone controls impact the available data in the image, and the resulting observation that photos should be just slightly overexposed to maximize the information that can be produced. The discussions of sharpening and noise reduction are also very well done, and these features in Lightroom 3 (or, Camera Raw 6) are particularly well evolved.After reading RWCR you will have a firm grasp of how to approach optimizing the quality of each image, whether you are a beginning or advanced Lightroom 3 or Camera Raw 6 user. Hats off to the authors for an outstanding work with immediately useful information on almost every page.

I am an digital photography enthusiast. I was looking for a detailed step by step digital editing manual using Photoshop CS5 and its Camera Raw CS5 software. I own relatively old Canon EOS 20D with 8.3 MGPX SLR camera. All my shootings are done in strictly Raw format and all my raw images are in Canon CR2 extension file type. There is no question about some benefits of this book for actually any type of photographers, however, unless you are a professional photographer and this is how you make your living but not a hobbyist like me, you are going to be somehow disappointed with the content of the book information. I am very much analytical person and my profession is in the computer programming field so I have developed this ability to learn from a book complex and highly analytical information and processes. The author of this book mostly focuses on how to organize and efficiently process your images using Camera Raw and Bridge CS5 using the concept of the Workflow without actually spending too much time on the image editing itself using the Camera Raw as a step by step manual. He only dedicated 2 chapters for using Camera Raw software and he actually did not show you and explain as if your image had that problem, you would have to use that tool to do that type of an adjustment and why. He just tells you that Jeff made highlights warmer and shadows cooler, or sometimes he would say you might have to do either Parametric or Point adjustments, or use Split Toning and so on showing some sample images that you can download but far not all of them. He did not connect the image particular problems with Camera Raw very large array of adjustments to correct them. Despite the fact he follows you with the usage of different tools and shows you how to use them but unfortunately, you can't pinpoint the specific principles for doing right editing adjustment for specific image problems. The most frustration I've got when the author shows some dialog boxes with the properties, however, he fails to tell you where to find these dialog boxes and you have to search around in your software page interface for the place where you can click some menus or preferences and might find this optional dialog boxes. All in all, this book is mostly dedicated to professional photographers for planning, strategies, organizing and filtering images, metadata of images, workflow and as how to use Adobe Bridge CS5 to make it all easy.If you really want to understand the Camera Raw image editing software, I think you should try to find a book that targets a hobbyist in digital photography who is looking to find technique for creating his images as close as possible to professional ones as we do not deal with thousands of images on a weekly basis and really do not need all these organizing and special strategic workflow skills to save some time.

The information in this Kindle edition definitely kicked my image processing skills up a notch. The only difficulties I've had with the Kindle edition are areas where Adobe's ACR program doesn't really make much sense, and the fact that the example images are smallish and grainy on my iPad. They do the job, however.I wasn't sure if this was the latest available version, but it's certainly up to date. Only the latest features in e.g. 7.3 and 7.4 ACR are not covered, but there is enough meat here to go a long way.

I'm a self-taught photographer/PhotoShopper and this is an excellent teaching tool. Concepts are very clearly explained and the relationship between Camera Raw and Photoshop CS-- is explored nicely - such as, how much to do in Camera Raw and when to move to PhotoShop.I use CS6 and sometimes CS4. But this book is directly applicable to both and well worth a very detailed read if you are exploring how to use these powerful tools.

Bought as a gift for a digital photography enthusiast, who reported that it contains so much information on the fundamental concepts of the processes involved that it has wide application beyond the exact version of the software discussed,

might be an older publication, and product CS5, but the information and usefulness is timeless.

About the Author

Józef Czapski (1896–1993), a painter and writer, and an eyewitness to the turbulent history of the twentieth century, was born into an aristocratic family in Prague and grew up in Poland under czarist domination. After receiving his baccalaureate in Saint Petersburg, he went on to study law at Imperial University and was present during the February Revolution of 1917. Briefly a cavalry officer in World War I, decorated for bravery in the Polish-Bolshevik War, Czapski went on to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and then moved to Paris to paint. He spent seven years in Paris, moving in social circles that included friends of Proust and Bonnard, and it was only in 1931 that he returned to Warsaw, and began exhibiting his work and writing art criticism. When Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, Czapski was mobilized as a reserve officer. Captured by the Germans, he was handed over to the Soviets as a prisoner of war, though for reasons that remain mysterious he was not among the twenty-two thousand Polish officers who were summarily executed by the Soviet secret police. Czapski described his experiences in the Soviet Union in several books: Memories of Starobilsk (forthcoming from NYRB), Inhuman Land, and Lost Time (available from NYRB), the last of which reconstructs a lecture he gave to his fellow prisoners about Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. Unwilling to live in postwar communist Poland, Czapski set up a studio outside of Paris. His essays appeared in Kultura, the leading intellectual journal of the Polish emigration that he helped establish; his painting underwent a great final flowering in the 1980s. Czapski died, nearly blind, at ninety-six. Almost Nothing: The 20th-Century Art and Life of Józef Czapski, a biography of Czapski by Eric Karpeles, was published by New York Review Books.Antonia Lloyd-Jones is the 2018 winner of the Transatlantyk Award for the most outstanding promoter of Polish literature abroad. This is a brand new haggadah compiled by the rabbi who ran Big Tent Judaism. It is an inclusive text sensitive to Jews by Choice, multi-racial, multi-ethnic, women, children, people who are not even Jewish. The illustrations help with that message. It includes brief margin notes that range from a Shaker hymn, to a Muslim prayer before eating. It includes all the steps of a seder and makes it accessible to all. The essential Hebrew is there with transliteration. And it includes some of the newer traditions. The orange, the beet, the artichoke, Miriam's Cup. There is even some music (words, not the sheet music) and some recipes. Everything a family preparing its first or its 100th seder would need to prepare without being overwhelming. I would consider using it for a congregational seder or a model seder in a Hebrew School setting.

I have a very mixed group at out seders, many non-jews who have not been to a seder along with many who go to a seder every year. I found this too basic for those who have been to a seder before. I used it the first night but switched back to my old haggadah for the second night.

The illustrations are mostly lovely -- I especially look for Jewish books with people with a range of skin and hair colors. But this one has BLUE people alongside the lighter and darker tones, because it makes it all just seem a bit ridiculous.

Very frustrating, completely against Torah training. Do not buy.

Excellent commentary including references to parallel historical events and movements and similarities with other religions.
