This is a very different take on what "The Gunsmith" fans have come to get in this great long running series. To start off ,rather than in the deserts or mountains, Clint Adams has wandered into Port Saunders,California,a half days ride south of San Francisco.Then,befor he knows it ,his hopes for some rest and relaxation turns into an interesting contest involving secret service agents and espionage,tied into the Civil War that has been over for over 20 years.There are not a lot of characters involved,but those that you'll encounter are very different. We have all gotten use to the Gunfighter handle that Adams has been known for;but this is the most detailed look at some of Clint's tools he uses in his profession,on page 80;and how he uses his honed skills and tools to find out the source of a rather common rifle. In Adam's travels he encounters a wide vasriety of people,both good and bad.In this case,he gets involved in saving the life of someone no less important than the President,over 20 years after the Civil War,probably President Grover Cleveland,though the actual name is not given. Then there's the title "No Turning Back" which turns up several times throughout the novel.I found 4 occurrences;how many can you find? Quite a bit different from the typical Gunsmith yarns,noneless a great read with lots of suspense,intrigue and fast action.
