The Fodor's Guide has useful and interesting information about specific areas, although it didn't cover quite as much as I'd have liked. When it talks about Merida being a bustling city, it does not say that the streets are extremely narrow and can be packed with traffic of all kinds (people walking, on scooters and bike; in cars, trucks and buses) and the rule seems to be just jump in and go. Also, the police in the city travel with all their flashing lights on, so you never know if there's something wrong or not. I took the book along on our trip to the Yucatan and did use it, but I found the area descriptions to be the most useful. What I found of most value was reading it in advance, before we even started our trip. It includes things like traveling and driving in the Yucatan that are really good to know. I did put tabs on the sections (Merida, Tulum, etc) for fast reference, and that helped.
I bought this for a summer family adventure to Cancun and the entire Riviera Maya coast. To show you how valuable I found it - I never unpacked it from the suitcase. There was simply nothing here that one could not find with 90 seconds of Google. I guess if you have never been on the Internet this would be a gold mine. However, in 2013, Fodor's needs to do way better. We found a Fodor's guide to Paris extremely valuable on a trip last year - it was filled with insider tips, tricks, and made you feel like the authors had actually lived in Paris. This felt like a few kids spent the summer online and printed out whatever they could find and called it the Fodor's Cancun and the Riviera Maya 2013.
Only four hotel ratings for Tulum!!!!!???? Come on! There are zillions of hotels in Tulum. This is not a very comprehensive or useful guide. I'm pretty disappointed. Also, for every hotel rating section, it says to check Fodor's website online for "more in depth reviews" but the reviews on the site are exactly the same and not any more in depth. Rip off!
The information in this guide is very superficial, particularly with regard to attractions such as Sian Ka'an and the Tulum ruins. It spends most of its time listing restaurants and hotels, but provides little in the way of other information that a visitor will need to maximize his/her enjoyment of a stay in the area.
A volume filled with practical and helpful information for my trip to Cancun. Smooth pages and great photos. It's been a number of years since my last visit, so I had concerns about drinking the water. Cancun has come a long way and, while the book recommends not drinking the water, the resort was fine, the water was fine, the salads were fine, etc. The book gave me lots of recommendations and I was glad to have it along for reference!
My husband and I recently took a trip to Cancun and found this guide to be most helpful.Very up-to-date information with lots of must see suggestions for sightseeing and dining.Will look for more Fodor's travel books for future travels.
Nice book if you're going to this area, but I found after reading through it, that I didn't use it much while I was down there. You could probably find all the information from here on the internet and save you some money.
