great book. I'm using for a beginner linux course at the college. info in the book is understandable and well written.NOTE: I have both the hardcopy and ecopy. The hardcopy is great, but DO NOT purchase the Kindle version. Certain text in the Kindle version is too small and illegible. Unless there's something i don't know about the Kindle app, I wasn't able to zoom/expand the text to view these certain text, for better viewing. If you need/want an ecopy of this book, there are sources online where you can purchase a .pdf or .epub version; I have - and the text is legible and clear in those versions.
Sobell is an excellent teacher. He lays the groundwork of each command in a simple and clear way and builds from there very logically and naturally. He does not overload with unnecessary information, but at the same time doesn't leave out anything important out either (he gives you all you need to start playing around with the commands yourself). This book is a thorough reference book (almost 1000 pages) but can be read straight through. I'm still working through it, but 100 pages in I'm just as motivated to continue on as I was from page one.My skills with the Linux console have already increased significantly. I'm new to Linux but have a few years of programming experience in general.I recommend this book to anyone looking to improve his or her command line skills and productivity
This book is like the course you wish you could take at college but they don't offer because they are making you learn theoretical things like what a turing machine is, and other things you will likely never use.This is a great practicel, no-nonsense introduction to Linux for those who are at the command line and want to know what to do next. How do you navigate the file system? What do those weird files like 'bin' and 'dev' and 'boot' mean? How can you change your command line to look cool? How do you write scripts to carry out commands in the command line? What is a pipeline? How the heck does this vi editor work? What is it to 'grep' a file? And on and on. All with practical examples to help you get started fast.The only reason I give it four, rather than five, stars is because the coverage is a bit shotgun, rather than systematic. On page 45 he will mention something that you won't learn about until page 223. I would rather have a more linear, methodical introduction. However, I think that might well be impossible in a book of this scope. You have to have some nonlinearities in the structure, I just think this has a few too many.
This book is very good at explaining its concepts, but the writing style is only ok. Particularly, the chapters are not very well broken up; each chapter is very long. I don't feel it's overloaded with fluff, but it does add in more than it should and doesn't really create sections too well. It's like each command has 1 or more sections to itself, but you don't really know how much you've actually completed just by going through one of them; partially, might be because I have the Kindle version, though, so the chapters are split into "xx hours xx minutes left in chapter" and "positions" in the book rather than pages. The examples, however, are pretty good, and the explanations are well done.I got this book for a class, but it's overall, though, pretty good, and I wouldn't not recommend it. Just wish they paced it better.However, extra points because the Kindle version has full audio reader.
A well written book, suitable for long term reference. Linux, as with other Unix based languages, is comprehensive, versatile and likely to retain its utility for years to come. I like Mark Sobel's style of organizing his material and writing a clear manuscript.This book is unlikely to find a wide audience, but for those who have need for a very good reference to this subject, this work merits your serious consideration. I consider this book to be a worthwhile addition to my Mac OS X library, and I am glad I have it. Very well written and organized, more suitable as a permanent bookshelf reference than as a "read it from cover to cover" volume ...
I'm a reasonably technically competent computer user who a bit less than one year ago wanted to try using Ubuntu Linux as my primary operating system. To make that happen, I needed a book that could help me get oriented to Linux usage and help me learn some of Linux's "more than newbie" tricks and techniques.Well, the good news began when A Practical Guide to Linux got me started with some excellent chapters and summary lists of many useful albeit less obvious Linux commands.But the book didn't stop there. It also has some VERY good chapters about both the VIM and EMACS text editors. I especially found the VIM chapters (more than one!) very good at getting me up to speed on both basic and advanced VIM commands and techniques.But wait, don't answer yet. After nearly a year of using Linux, I find The Practical Guide to Linux back beside my keyboard. This time it's helping me begin doing some shell programming and C programming.In short, A Practical Guide to Linux is both well written and well edited. It's a book the author and publishers can be justifiably proud of having produced.If you're technically competent enough to get Linux up and working, but still need a "friend" to help you make Linux do some useful work, I believe The Practical Guide to Linux will be a very useful addition to your technical library and a very good complement to your Linux adventure...
I've purchased many Linux books on Amazon and this one is, for the most part, the best yet! It's VERY well organized. Topics and material are thoroughly covered, with summaries and exercises at the end of each chapter. Book includes many examples, four appendixes, three indexes, and a thorough glossary. The only negative so far is that, unless you are an instructor, only the answers to the even numbered exercises--and advanced exercises--are available (on line at the author's website). This book is over 1,000 pages long and was copyrighted in 2013.
