The version we got is the 1995 edition and is good for a backup chart ... but doesn't reflect the dozens of chart updates made since waters around Vieques were opened to cruisers and sailors. We're somewhat disappointed.

Excellent It bailed us out when we ran out of light before getting into the anchorage at Philipsburg and got us into several beaches that were completely deserted.A bit dated is spots (it is 7 years old) For example, Saba has installed a number of excellent mooring on the south and west sides on the island, making it much easier to get either by the traditional landing or LLadder Landing on the West side. There is a road down to that now (no more 1000 steps to climb). However it was out when we were there (4-1-00)

We've sailed and chartered in the USVI and BVI numerous times and ALWAYS take this guide with us. From little known anchorages (Mermaids Chair on St. Thomas) to the most frequented (Great Harbor on Yost Van Dyke)this guide is without equal.

I imagined myself in a smokey bowling alley, hearing these great, mostly unknown men tell their "back in the day" stories. I'm not a bowler, but the pages of the book have me planning my next outing to the lanes!

I am of Brooklyn: body, soul and bone marrow. For that reason I was anxious to read Gianmarc's book not merely as a bowling book, but as a picture of a time and place that I cannot return to. The book doesn't disappoint with its characters, which some people may find fictiionalized, but are not. It is colorful when describing the characters on the corners, whether they are singing in harmony or hustling, or both. But in additiion to the comedy of the book, Gianmarc's poets soul shines through as when he talks of Kenny Barber who, after sharing his memories with Giarmarc, committed suicide. I highly recommend this book. If you want to know about bowling's history: read this book. If you want to go back to a time and place that exists in your heart and mind: read this book. If you just want a good time with a book: read this book.

A friend of mine gave me this book to read. He actually gave it to me at the Bowling Center. A few days later I started looking for it and couldn't remember bringing it home. I went to the Bowling Center to see if anyone had turned it in. No luck! The only thing I could remember was what I thought the cover looked like. I went on Amazon and sure enough it was available. I did tell my friend that I had lost his book. Really felt bad about it since he's son gave it to him. A few day later, I received the replacement book from Amazon. However, before I could give him the replacement book, I saw a black bag leaning against the wall in my computer room. Sure enough, his book was inside. My friend now has his book back and I received a bonus one of my own from the Amazon folks. Everything worked out great!

I bought the book for my mother for her birthday because she loved bowling so much in the 70s and 80s that we watched it on Saturday afternoon TV. It never occurred to me that my father, with his love of True Crime, would be interested in the book, too. As soon as my mother opened it, my father grabbed it and started reading random passages aloud to the family at the dining room table -- interrupting with his own "neighborhood" stories from his youth in Brooklyn and Queens, saying things like "That's what these guys used to do! They used to . . . " and giving us a history lesson of crime in the 70s and 80s. The next morning my mother told me that reading just the first chapter was like taking a walk down memory lane for her; she's excited to read the rest. I hope they fight over it and then share it with the rest of the family.

Quite simply, this is the best "bowling book" ever written. But it is much more than that. Pin Action captures a slice of American life from a bygone era populated by hustlers, gamblers, athletes, wanna-be athletes and countless other colorful characters. One can imagine similar individuals in pool halls or on golf courses, but in this case bowling alleys provided the backdrop for Gianmarc Manzione's masterful storytelling. The book is brimming with detail and shading that makes it virtually impossible to put down. If you love bowling, you must read this book. If you are a sports fan, you will love this book. If you are a student of the human condition, you will be amazed by how both strengths and foibles play out on shiny wooden lanes, housed in dens of inequity that have faded to foggy but fascinating memories — all brought to life on the pages of Pin Action.

Anyone who is addicted to bowling, as I am will enjoy this book. It begins in the early sixties, and tells of the young kids, who would bowl all night, if they could hustle another bowler. It talks of the oil on the lanes, the methods that the bowlers went to cause the ball to hook, because this was before weight blocks were added to balls. The subtle methods they used to get inside their opponents head before the match started. A very enjoyable read.

The book chronicles an era and a hustler. This is a subject not often treated. The author brings it to life awfully well. Anyone who as a kidhung around a bowling alley will recognize some of the characters and the atmosphere of the time. I am not much of a bowler but I enjoyedthe slice of life and the Damyonesque characters of the book. Nice work.

Loved this book. Took me way back to sitting in the smokey balcony watching my dad bowl in this 8 lane center (bowling alley). I was ten years old and myself and the waitress behind the little drink counter and I the only women in the place! I have bowled for over 65 years and continue to love it.

Hornfischer has surpassed his fine The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors with this book. Three areas stand out for analysis:• The chronology of the Guadalcanal campaign is made very clear. The sea battles are described in detail, sometimes gruesomely so but that’s one of the points of the book. War at sea has no foxholes.• The command structure, doctrines and idiosyncrasies of both sides are examined. Guadalcanal may have been to the Navy what Kasserine Pass was to the Army – clearing out dead wood.• More importantly, the psychology of officers and men is explored with empathy. How young, inexperienced boys become men within minutes of horror is a fascinating study.

This is a well written history of the US Navy's Guadalcanal campaign, probably its toughest in WWII. It was also remarkable for the number of battles from August 1942 onwards, most of them between surface warships (i.e. battleships, cruisers, and destroyers) as opposed to the carrier battles starting with the Battle of Coral Sea. The author writes very well, often with high literary skill and this is a good read even for those familiar with this campaign and naval history in general. Indeed, as footnotes were lacking, for a while I thought this was just another synthesis of the usual sources (many second hand), but then found a long and impressive set of end-notes as well as the bibliography which included many after action reports, inquiry minutes, and so on. Footnotes would have been better.I rated this book at four stars because some of the language was "over the top" in stressing the author's views, and because I did not find anything really new, not surprising perhaps given the number of books already published on this subject. However, I would certainly recommend this book for readers not familiar with the Guadalcanal Campaign, and a five star rating would be justified for that reader segment community.

Despite earlier US naval successes at Midway and the Coral Sea, it was Guadalcanal where the US first succeeded in PUSHING BACK the WWII Japanese expansion in the Pacific. Though I’d heard of “the Tokyo express”, “the Slot” and “Iron Bottom Sound”, this book puts all that (and more) into coherent context. It also made all the naval battles almost feel visceral -- and frustrating.Why frustrating? We had the advantage of radar, but we had commanders who did not understand how to use radar to their advantage. We had younger commanders who, though having made mistakes, subsequently learned how to more effectively counter the Japanese and their naval tactics -- but they were subsequently replaced by officers with more seniority (but little combat experience) who then proceeded to makes the very same mistakes. Japanese torpedoes (and their tactics for using them) far exceeded the US torpedoes and tactics, yet US naval leadership never seemed to realize that was the case.The book appears to have covered all the major naval actions around Guadalcanal. And the timeline of those battles is made clear to the reader. It is pointed out that nearly 4 times as many seamen died fighting on the waters around Guadalcanal as did marines fighting on Guadalcanal itself. As for the brutal fighting by the marines on Guadalcanal, that topic is touched on, but that is not the focus of this book. (I’ve read other books that cover the island fighting quite well.)The book had many stories of individual heroic actions by both the sailors and their officers. But I’m sure there were many other cases of seamen’s bravery, but their deaths meant that their stories would never be told.Highly recommended.

This a remarkable look at warfare. Up close and personal. Anyone in national politics should have to read this; there are a thousand ways to die in battle and they are mostly pretty horrific.That to me is the main reason to read this book.The overall story of Guadalcanal is very tough to tell in one book, and (perhaps because I'm new to it) I got lost a few times (back on track with the help of the web). I think more pictures would help, with timetables: like, "this is the layout of the ships at 01:30, this the layout at 02:00" and so on.Along those lines, I'm not sure the book has a thematic coherence. What I mean is, besides the blow-by-blow, what is the overarching theme? That to me is a compelling reason to buy a book. One thing that really got my attention here was the inability of some officers to come to grips with the possibilities of radar. What was that about? For those in the know, this is an issue that has its start at Pearl Harbor (some radar techs did see the blips on the screen and did phone them in but were ignored).But really, the awfulness of dying in war might really be theme that the author overlooked. While not organized as such, the raw material is in the book, and, again, makes it worth reading by any politician or for that matter citizen.

This is an interesting book, but I think it assumes too much knowledge by the reader of the various ships used by the U Navy in WWII. It would benefit by a guide (with pictures) of each class of ship referred to. It also would benefit from photos of the main people on both sides, preferably in their standing in the chain of c0ommand. Both would make the reader keep things strait. Maps included are pretty useless on a kindle.Deeply detailed, maybe too deeply, it is noot an eassy read without the things mentioned above. Reading is interesting, but plodding. Perhaps this just isn't suit for a kindle and needs to be read in print. I want to like it more than I do.

This book is very easy to read. Points out the dangers of inflammation but also clearly lays out a positive plan to change. I found this to be extremely important to make a life style change. Looking forward to eating healthy!!

Been trying to get a refund but cannot get the company to issue a refund on digetial books on this author. This seems to be the only way to get their attention. Chosen the hardback instead. Still to get it and give a review. Amazon doesn't allow a section to show a refund, bad!

Basic information on food choices for inflammation reduction. Recipes were nice. Would have liked it to be a bit more in-depth.
