I purchased this book to find new resources and tools to manage my PTSD and Anxiety Disorder after a recent death in my adult life brought back.memories of childhood traumatic events. For me this was a refresher course on some topics, that I covered in therapy at the time I first learned my "social anxiety" was actually based in a traumatic event, making it essential to work on that before I could move forward.I was actually taken by surprise that "death" remained such a powerful trigger point for me. That I really became so overwhelmed in /by my symptoms that I didn't even notice I was dealing with P.T.S.D. exacerbation. This book has really helpful me to "polish the tools" I already had in my toolbox (along with my Worry Box App). I would recommend this book to others. If you are just beginning to build your tool box, or if you are looking to do a refreshing of your skills.

If you're doing this one on your own, make sure you have somebody who's a good support and maybe can even take things over for you for a few days. The exercises take time, and they bring up things you thought or hoped you'd forgotten. Best way I can describe it is I'm back at work, my home life has dramatically improved, and I've faced down a lot of demons while working through this book. It's not an adult coloring book or some new age woo-woo. It makes you look straight at what happened to you, how it affected you in the past and is affecting you now, and how you can start doing the hard work to make your life better. Plan to spend at least a couple months on it, especially if you're trying to work or take care of a family while doing it. And be aware it will trigger whatever you've been fighting if you do the exercises honestly. It's like I've been running down dark tunnels with dead ends, and the only way to straighten my life out was to go back to the beginning and work my way through. This book helped.

This is, by far, the most effective treatment for my PTSD thus far. I've been on medications, seen multiple therapists, talked to others, but this book works best for me. Before asking you to go through the activities, it walks through step by step and defines PTSD (and relevant terms) and prods you to take a short quiz to determine whether or not certain things apply to you. Very helpful in learning about myself and what I need to work on to get through my PTSD. 10/10 would recommend.

I love this workbook. I'm nearly finished with it. I would highly recommend going through it with someone who knows and understands your PTSD. Whether that be a therapist or a trusted friend or family member. It truly helped me sort out my trauma and move forward in my life.I would be more likely to recommend this book to those who are well into their knowledge about their PTSD. If you're just starting out with your PTSD healing journey, buy this book for later.

Excellent book for those wishing to work on building skills and identifying triggers when diagnosed with PTSD. Would've given it five stars, but, unfortunately, this latest version completely eliminates explaining the subtle differences between PTSD and Complex PTSD.

Not what I thought it would be. If you are self aware enough to know you suffer from PTSD, you are going to need more than this workbook. Might be helpful if you know someone with PTSD and want to understand them better, but it does not have alot of depth. I thought I would see more explanation.

My councilor has been doing trauma and ptsd for 20 years and reccomended this for me to deal with events from my child hood. It's difficult to reopen those wounds make sure you are ready and you have a support system in place ready to catch you because it's like being right back in the thick of it. Go slow and don't be afraid to stop if you need to.

I bought this to find a workbook that was easily accessible to my patients and still sound information. I was very impressed at the easy of format, yet realistic use of DSM-V criteria and evidenced based information. My patients have really liked this book and I have gained success working through it with them. I did get the Kindle version as it is more than affordable

This book is an excellent resource for the professional and the laymen. It offers insights and exercises that are practical and manageable. I ordered the Kindle Version, opting to save money, but found it most beneficial in paperback. It's the kind of book you pick up and put down several times before you work through it but each visitation provides more insights and growth. I would recommend this be a resource on every counselor and counseling graduate student's shelf. I found it incredibly beneficial throughout my internship and practicum and for my own personal growth. The exercises and skills presented can facilitate better reflection and understanding of one's self and experiences.

When Paul Johnson writes biography, the intent is not simply to recount the facts of someone's life: it is didactic. Johnson is an historian who intends to teach a lesson with this writings, to show us what we should draw from the subject's life, works, and thoughts to better our own lives. Thus it is with Johnson's biography of Socrates, the first and perhaps still the greatest of the moral philosophers. Rather than a dry recitation of what we know of Socrates's life and works, Johnson looks at themes in Socrates' life --bravery; his love for Athens; an absolute commitment to doing what was right and just; and irony-- and uses them to illustrate those things that should be valuable in our own lives, and thus improve our lives for being valued. Johnson reads much into the texts and context, sometimes making assumptions and presenting them as facts because he's sure they must be true, and there is the occasional odd error, but the broad lessons Johnson teaches (or, rather, relates what Socrates taught) and the beauty in his writing make them forgivable. The Kindle version is clean, with no typos that I could spot, though it is rather expensive for such a short book.Recommended as an introduction to the person, to help make the philosophy more accessible.

Paul Johnson has a unique ability to summarize a topic in a brief but very informative manner. Having enjoyed his bios of Napoleon and Churchill, I jumped on this when I saw it, and I was not disappointed. As usual, Johnson's text reads easily. The editing of my Kindle edition was a little sloppy in places, but not so bad as to hamper my enjoyment of the book.Johnson covers Socrates' life well, and the reader comes away with a good feel for who he was--a physically unattractive man who believed in Athens and its people and who sought to bring out the best in them. Thanks to his student, Plato, we know what Socrates believed and how he taught.According to Johnson, Socrates was a highly principled man who loved Athens, fought for Athens, taught Athenians of all levels of society and paved the way for monotheism. In the end, he was unjustly sentenced to death, but died a noble death continuing to exemplify the principles he treasured. In the process, Socrates became the most influential philosopher of all time. The primary question that Johnson left unanswered for me was how Socrates supported himself. It is clear that Socrates lived a simple life, but it is unclear exactly how Socrates actually supported even his minimal needs. This is an excellent introduction to Socrates. Highly recommended.

Johnson spends a great deal of effort untangling the thought and character of Socrates from that of Plato, mostly to good effect. However, he ends up presenting a Socrates who shares our contemporary values in somewhat unrealistic fashion. Nevertheless, the book reveals the context and basic outlook of Socrates the Athenian sage rather well. Overall, a very good and easy to read introduction. Recommended.

I actually found this book to be good. You have to keep in mind that this book is largely an interpretation of who Socrates might have been based upon what little evidence we have. I'm not saying I agree with the author's interpretation entirely, but I enjoyed the theory. One reviewer commented that the author claimed Socrates would've voted Republican. I didn't find that anywhere. I did notice that the author felt Socrates was a conservative person, and from that maybe some readers thought the writer was suggesting something else.I bought this book because so little is out there about a father of Western philosophy, a person who deeply influenced Plato and some of the other most important figures of ancient times. I really wish I could've met Socrates, and the author gave me a taste of what that might've been like. The older I get, the more I agree with some of the principles Socrates supposedly upheld.

Superb view and understanding of the life and environment of the founder of Philosophy and real democracy.

Good. Not terribly in depth. The "A Man for our times" connection is not developed in a satisfying way. Like Jesus of Nazareth, Socrates did not leave behind a body of written work. We know him as others have wished us to.

I'm so impressed by this book that I have mailed a copy to my grandson's classical academy. I recommend that the school give a copy to each ninth grader. They read some Socratic writings.

When you first think of Socrates it is not always in modern terms. Not only is Socrates a "modern man" in every sense of the word, he is a man across time. When the mind opens darkness flees. The Socratic method of questioning is really simplisticity codified. A child asks why because they don't know and are not afrad to say so. The same with Socrates - his ego does not get in the way - only his mind and it is wonderfully open. I recommend this if nothing else as a method to open the mind and expand our individual universe.

I've been watching her show on the Cooking Channel since it premiered and really enjoy it. Her recipes on the show looks simple. As a Korean-American, my Mom and Dad did all the cooking for our family when I was growing up. So when I started to live away from my parents I had no idea really how to cook Korean food. I've asked my Mom to write down her recipes, but she never had the time to do it. As Korean food is becoming more accessible and popular more Korean food recipe blogs and web sites have come up. I especially liked Maangchi's YouTube videos and recipes. But what I liked about Korean Food Made Simple is how Judy Joo travels to Korea and explains the Korean culture and history and shows how it's made in Korea and duplicates the recipe for the home cook but in a simpler way.Her cookbook is organized into several categories which have some of my favorite Korean foods. I just got the Kindle version today, so I will update my review after I've tried some of her recipes.I wish the Kindle version had a table of contents where you can click on the category. The categories are:Kimchi and PicklesPancakes, Dumplings and other small bitesSalad & VeggiesRiceNoodlesSoups & StewsSeafoodChickenBeef & LambPorkSaucesBreadSweetsDrinksI've already bookmarked the following recipes!Kimchi pancakes, Bindaetteok, Haemul pajeon, Mandu, Potato Salad, Kimchi Pulled Pork Disco Fries, Bibimbap, Kimchi Fried Rice, Jjajangmyun, Oxtail Soup, Mackerel, KFC, Galbi Jjim, Galbi, Dubu Kimchi, and all the different soju drinks!

Love this book. The pictures are gorgeous and I love the background that she gives on each recipe. The recipes are easy to follow and if you don't have the products in your grocer's store, you can buy them all on line (just plan ahead, obs). Love Judy Joo and her show. Even my 14 year old is a fan.

I had already read this book as a library check-out and have now purchased as a gift for a family member who enjoys cooking Korean food. Recipes are clear and the one's I tried turned out well. Ms. Joo's discussions about the individual recipes as well as the culture of Korean cooking are interesting and entertaining. It's one of the few cookbooks I have read from cover to cover.

The book was very imformative. There are lots of recipes to follow. There are some Korean food that can be fattening lke the double fried chicken but overall, Korean food is nutritious, delicious, and low in calories. I recommend this book as well as Maangchi's cook book.

Now one of my favorite cook books -- images are stunning and she makes Korean food elegant, delicious, and accessible. Great for people like me, who grew up eating Korean food, but also a wonderful starter for someone just getting acquainted with Korean cuisine. I'm a huge fan of her show and I've been knocking out these dishes each week and my family loves them!

So far I have only made one of the dishes but it was delicious. I am looking forward to trying lots of them all when I have time. The book itself is very well put together, very colorful. Beautiful photographs. Easy explanations.

Great recipes with superb flavors. Most are easy to make too. Love JJ's TV show too!

My favorite British Korean chef! I have been interested in Korean cooking since I saw Chef Joo on Cookingtv.com.

Review

“At moments of extreme exasperation, parents may think that there’s something wrong with their teenagers’ brains. Which, according to recent books on adolescence, there is…. [Jensen] offers a parenting guide laced with the latest MRI studies…. Packed with charts and statistics.” (Elizabeth Kolbert, The New Yorker)“It’s charming to see good science translate directly into good parenting.” (New York Times Book Review)“Frances Jensen, a neuroscientist and single mother of two boys. . . delved into the emerging science of the adolescent brain [and] came out with provocative new insights for parents, educators, public policymakers and teens themselves.” (Washington Post)“Why’s your child so self-absorbed? Give him time, writes neurologist Jensen: Empathy comes with age.” (Good Housekeeping)“Meticulously documented and reported, the studies offer proof that it’s not just parents who think their teenagers don’t quite have it all together.” (Kirkus Reviews)“A captivating chapter, ‘The Digital Invasion of the Teenage Brain,’ calls attention to computer craving and adolescent addiction to the Internet.… [A] sensible, scientific, and stimulating book.” (Booklist)“Recommended for readers who enjoyed Laurence Steinberg’s Age of Opportunity.” (Library Journal (starred review))“A valuable resource for parents, youth workers, educators, and anyone involved with teens in any way. The book is engaging, understandable, and extremely informative.” (New York Journal of Books)“Marvelous…. Dr. Jensen uses her considerable expertise as a neuroscientist and a mother to explain the recent explosion of adolescent brain research and how this research can help us better understand and help young people.” (Carol A. Ford, M.D. President, Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine; Professor of Pediatrics, University of Pennsylvania; and Chief, Division of Adolescent Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.)“Frances Jensen has brilliantly translated academic science and clinical studies…. A ‘must read’ for parents, teachers, school nurses, and many others who live with or interact with teens.” (S. Jean Emans, MD. Chief, Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine, Boston Children's Hospital; Professor of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School)

From the Back Cover

For many years, scientists believed that the adolescent brain was essentially an adult one. Over the last decade, however, neurology and neuroscience have revealed that the teen years encompass vitally important stages of brain development.Interweaving clear summary and analysis of research data with anecdotes drawn from her years as a clinician, researcher, and public speaker, renowned neurologist Frances E. Jensen, MD, explores adolescent brain functioning and development in the context of learning and multitasking, stress and memory, sleep, addiction, and decision making. The Teenage Brain explains how these eye-opening findings not only dispel commonly held myths about teens but also yield practical suggestions for adults and teenagers negotiating the mysterious and magical world of adolescent biology.“It’s charming to see good science translate directly into good parenting.”—New York Times Book Review“This well-written, accessible work...offers support and a way for parents to understand and relate to their own soon-to-be-adult offspring.”—Publishers Weekly

I was a little leery of this book from the opening pages. Dr. Jensen opens with a horror story - her teenage son came home with his hair dyed black. She just couldn't imagine how such a level-headed kid could do such a thing. And, worse, he wanted to get red streaks as well. So her solution was to spend a fortune taking him to her "color guy" to get it done right. I guess Dr. Jensen and I have different ideas on parenting. I made a vow early on never to sweat the small stuff, and I consider hair color well within that category - if that's the worst my kids do in their teenage years, I will count my blessings. Furthermore, if they're going to experiment with hair color, they can take responsibility and accept the consequences themselves. Green hair is not fatal. But maybe the information on the teenage brain is better, and we can just agree to disagree about parenting. Dr. Jensen clearly knows her stuff as far as brain development, anatomy, physiology and chemistry go, but I found her information a bit weak, disorganized and failing to thoroughly connect the dots, and I found many of her illustrative stories distracting and a bit alarmist.Dr. Jensen starts with an overview of brain structures relevant for cognitive and emotional functioning, including, among others, the brain stem, the amygdala, the hippocampus and the cerebral cortex, especially the frontal lobes. She shows how brain development is a process of both "pruning", in which excess neurons are selectively cut back based on environmental stimulation or lack thereof and "myelination" in which the neurons are coated with a fatty sheath with helps to send signals faster along neuronal pathways. The pruning allows for specialization of function within brain regions and allows neurons with to "fire" and "wire" together creating associations to learn new information and hone new skills. Myelination allows different brain regions to be more connected and integrated. These developmental processes start from the back, more primitive parts of the brain and work forward toward the more advanced "executive" parts of the brain. The amygdala, for instance, is one of the most primitive parts of the brain which allows for recognition of and response to threats and stress. It is highly reactive to emotion, but until the frontal lobes are better developed and integrated, the child/teenager has little ability to process and manage that emotion and control impulses. The processes of pruning and myelination are part of brain "plasticity", meaning that the brain has great potential to change. For a long time it has been thought that this period of great plasticity was limited to early childhood (up to about age five), which is why early childhood enrichment and learning have been considered so important. But science is now showing us that adolescence (beginning in the early teen years and continuing through young adulthood, approximately the early twenties) is another period of great plasticity. Which means that teens are capable of learning and changing nearly as much as young children. This means that adolescence is an exciting time of opportunity, growth and development. But it also means that the perils of the teen years are even more intense because negative experiences during these years are more likely to be encoded in the brain and lead to life-long emotional, relational, legal and general health problems.Dr. Jensen spends a chapter discussing what this means for teens' ability to learn and the importance of sleep (along with a discussion about teens' diurnal cycles, indicating that teens' tend to be sleep deprived because they are biologically programmed to go to sleep and wake up later than adults, but are nonetheless required to function on adults' schedules and how this is potentially harmful for teen brain development). She then spends a chapter discussing risk-taking behavior in teens and how the reward centers in teens' brains are wired to respond much more excitedly to potential rewards (including and especially peer approval) than adults' brains - to the point that teens have difficulty evaluating risks if the pull of the reward is too strong.Next Dr. Jensen spends a chapter each discussing potential harmful influences and obstacles frequently encountered in the teen years, including tobacco, alcohol, pot, stress, mental illness, digital overload and concussions, along with how those factors can affect teens' brains and why teens are so much more susceptible to their influence. I do have an issue with her chapter on stress because she seems to be saying that teens are under a lot more stress than adults. I think it's more that teens have fewer and less developed coping mechanisms than adults, so the stress they have seems greater ("drama"). But I'd say it's absurd to suggest that someone who has a home and food to eat is under more stress than the parents who are working to provide that home and food. Finally Dr. Jensen wraps up with a look beyond adolescence into young adulthood and how continuing brain plasticity offers unique opportunities, yet continuing perils, for young people. She provides some advice on how to help the burgeoning adult in your life make a successful transition, which is pretty much just a developmental continuation of her advice for structuring your teens' life for maximal likelihood of success. Basically it boils down to don't be afraid to be involved in your child's life. Although the quality and intensity differ as children age, children continue to need supervision and guidance well into adulthood. There is certainly a lot of good information in this book, but it's just not presented as effectively as it could be. Dr. Jensen is trying hard to present precise scientific information in generally understandable layman's terms, but she doesn't get either quite right. She is trying hard to be both scientific and folksy, but some of her jargon is not adequately explained (especially when a previously discussed brain structure or function comes up again in later chapters) and sometimes her folksy tone makes it difficult to accept her scientific viewpoint. In addition, a lot of her presentation of studies relies on correlational studies without addressing the issue of causation. For instance, she'll talk about brain abnormalities found in teens who smoke, drink or use illegal drugs with the implication that the drugs caused the abnormality. But there also needs to be a discussion of the possibility that brain abnormalities may be likely to lead teens to such behavior - perhaps they are more prone to risk-taking or more responsive to rewards, or perhaps they are "self-medicating" to deal with the effects of their abnormalities. Finally, Dr. Jensen seems to believe that teens need to be beaten over the head with alarmist messages about the dangers of the world. I agree that repetition is helpful for learning, but generally speaking, lack of information is not why kids get into the problems they do. Every kid by now knows that smoking causes lung cancer and that driving under the influence greatly increases the chance of serious collision. The problem, however, is that teens think that they are invincible. It can help to show them situations involving kids their own age, but such situations can also be traumatizing and paradoxically increase the likelihood of the behavior. Seeing a mangled car that was involved in a DUI accident, for instance, can lead to a variety of emotional responses including excitation. There are no easy answers, of course, but keeping the lines of communication open is vital. Beating kids over the head too much can lead them to tune out and shut down. There have been a spate of books lately on brain development and what it means for raising children and adolescents. In my view, this is one of the weaker of those books. For a better view of the brain science side of the equation I recommend Laurence Steinberg's AGE OF OPPORTUNITY (although I part company with him too on a lot of his applications of what we've learned about teenage brain development). And although it's aimed more at parents of younger kids rather than teenagers, for the child-rearing angle I recommend Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson's NO DRAMA DISCIPLINE. The important take-away of that book is how children's and teen's brains are wired to respond to perceived stress and threats, including that posed by how we as parents interact with our kids when we get angry and punitive. And for a very thorough look at how stress affects all human systems, including the brain, I recommend Robert Zapolsky's WHY ZEBRAS DON'T GET ULCERS. The more we learn about brain development and functioning over the life course, the more we seem to realize that stress is one of the prime determinants in whether people thrive or fail. As parents, including parents of teens, the best gifts we can give our children are a safe and secure environment and the tools to manage and rebound from stress and trauma when they do occur.

This incredibly well written and informative book was recommended to us by our son’s pediatrician for learning how to understand the teenage mind. It is told from the perspective of a scientist who is discussing her own children, among others! Engagingly written for the layperson, but packed with fantastic information so useful and unexpected that it will take your breath away! Read it and learn what you didn’t know; you will never look at your kids the same way again!

A colleague told me this summer that the tools I have created to help with transition from high school to college are based in brain science. When I asked what she meant she said I needed to buy and read The Teenage Brain. And so, my summer research has included it. As a parent of three college-aged children I wish I had read it earlier in our lives. As a designer of experiential tools it has made me feel I am going in the correct direction.

This is an illuminating and easy to follow read for both the scholar and layperson. I used it in my Lifespan Development graduate psychology course because it makes brain development and anatomy easy to understand. As a mom to a 14 year-old, this book makes a lot of practical sense, too. Well written and pleasant to read, I really can't put it down.

I not only found Frances Jensen's words and research to be SO TRUE, but indispensable in the last year of my kid's high school career. It helped me cope and understand when everything truly imploded. 'nuff said.

GREAT book... much that you already know (or should), but it changes the way you look at your child...and others... and self... I'm not much on self-help books, and this is NOT that at all.. Kinda says, "Why!" & leaves the thinking on how to handle it up to you.. I was immensely impressed..

If your teenager is mentally exhausting you, read this book. You will realize that he/she absolutely can't help with certain behavior and will lead you to be more comprehensive: Peace at home has no price!

I loved the scientific information that was given early on in the book, I found it really intriguing but I found the author personal anecdotes to be a little tedious and also the book sort of freaks me out with worry about every little thing that could happen to your child.

Great book and great order thank you

too much going on for kids book

It was ok. I thought it would be more like actual projects to go out and do, but it's actually a much higher level read than that. Not great for a 7 year old. He wasn't even interested in it after opening the camera we got him. I thought when the title said "for kids" it meant 5-8 year olds. It's really more a 10-12, which I consider more pre-teen. Came on time in perfect condition though.

This book is great! OK, I'm not a kid! With that being uttered and want you all to know that this is an adorable, well written, beautifully illustrated, highly technical photographic book for KIDS!For years I have been trying to teach my children (old now) and my granddaughters the proper way to use a highly sophisticated piece of technology....the CAMERA. I actually have been successful in that endeavor (with a lot of teeth grinding). If I had this book it would have been a whole lot easier. I am presently trying to teach my eleven year old granddaughter enough of the technical and artistic aspects of photography so she can accompany me on my wilderness field trips. I gave her the book after I had read it.....she devoured it in half the time that I read it, and has been taking amazing images.....but more important she WANTS to take better images and she want to try her hand at macro and panoramas.Thank you Anne-Laure Jacquart

Beautiful done. Got it for my daighter. She loves it.

Cameras have become ubiquitous. Even if we don’t have a high end DSLR we probably carry around a phone that can make wonderful images. It not just adults. I saw a 2015 survey quoted on the internet from Child Guide that says that the average American child gets their first cell phone when they’re 6 years old. That means our children and grandchildren are walking around with cameras. As we learn more about photography, why not help these young people learn more about it too. Anne-Laure Jacquart has written a book, Photo Adventures For Kids, that does just that. The book is designed to be given to the child for them to work through on their own. The premise is that the child needs to help solve the mystery of photography. He/she works through challenges and assignments, collecting evidence to solve the mystery. This book does not cover the technical aspects of the camera. Setting f/stops and shutters speeds may be a bit much for even a precocious 8 or 9 year old. Rather the book concentrates on the design of the image. It helps the young photographer understand how to isolate a subject and remove distracting elements from the image. Then it delves into how cropping might give unusual, but successful, interpretations of the subject. This is followed by an introduction to some of the element of graphic design. All of these topics are presented in a fun but systematic way. The material it covers is good for all of us. The only reason I give this book 4 starts rather than 5 is that I put several of the passages into a grammar checker and the reading level was 8th grade to 11th grade. The editors recommend the book for 8-12 year olds. I haven’t had young children for a long time, but I don’t think any of mine would have worked through this on their own at 8. That’s not a big problem. Work through the topic with your young photographer. That way you will be spending time with them doing something they enjoy, and I bet you learn something along the way as well.

This is an excellent photographic reference for photographers of all ages. I purchased this for my 10-year old grandson to help him develop his budding enthusiasm for photography. Having read other reviews, I read through it before wrapping it up. Very similar to the digital photography course I took at the community college, but written so that even non-photo bugs can understand what to do.

A very good instructional book for kids, well for beginners whose interest is taking photos. Exploring the art, this book made it fun and simple and encourage it did! Winner of a free book, Goodreads First Read Giveaway. Thank you, Darlene Cruz

TRUE GEM!! This book supports the importance of heart magnetism, and staying in the highest vibration you can. Google the vibrational scale, most of the population is in the bottom predominately. Those rare wealthy, seemingly "lucky" people that we all meet at some point in time are people that stay at the top of the vibrational scale, and have expanded heart fields. Also google the heart math institute, the magnetic heart field is scientific fact, not new age gobblygoop. This book connected many dots.....

The masters of the old days that started it all. No need to look into all the current new books on this subject, this is the true master. Great book, wonderful resource. I have added just about all his books to my library.

I found this book to be very practical. It has a lot of insides that will give you more awareness about certain behaviors that robe you of personal magnetism. The challenge that I found in this book is that when it comes to exercises some times the clarity is not there, but all in all they are morethen I found in any other books, and will make you feel stronger, and ready for action. If you don't do the exercises that is probably not going to happen for you, and if you don't read the previous work about personal magnetism you also will not get the full picture. In conclusion I would say this, if your goal is to become charismatic, you do need to add this books to your library.

Still reading and learning.

This is the one and only William Walker Atkinson, writing under one of his many pseudonyms.

Thank You!

Excellent book ... Nice tips to become as a better version of ourselves.Helps to develop techniques used in daily base but with a higher purpose.

The book is a must for those wanting to lead in a positive light. Great read. You will enjoy the tips. Definitely will be reading this again. --LDG

I mean no disrespect to the author in this review. Dedicating your life to the betterment of young people by any means is a worthy and noble cause. That being said, the very title of this book is contradicting. The information in this book is by no means how "modern soccer" is coached, at least outside of the United States. I would argue that this position specific, technical centric approach to coaching is what is crippling U.S. soccer. The author writes, "But we, as coaches, seem to get sidetracked with the other aspects of the player's game like how they fit into the tactical system of play, when we could be doing more to help them." Developing a player's understanding of a tactical system of play is getting sidetracked? This is exactly what we should be coaching through Rondos and progressive positional play exercises that develop the cognitive abilities of our players as well as their skill development. Isolated and/or position specific "drills" that have little contextual relationship to match conditions aren't developing our players' cognitive abilities because soccer is more than the sum of its technical parts. The author cites Cristiano Ronaldo's individual development at Manchester United as an example of how position-specific training can elevate a player's game. This example is misleading in that Ronaldo arrived at Manchester as an elite athlete. The training he received their only served to fine tune his skills. The youth soccer coach, assuming that is the target of this book, needs to focus on developing a team of players who recognize the multi-directional collection of angles and space and execute their game within that space at match speed. There is absolutely a need for individual skills development but much of that development will occur naturally within a cognitive approach to training.Again, no disrespect to this author but this is not modern coaching. This is the same technical centric approach to coaching that has kept the U.S. in the proverbial dark age of soccer development. I'll stop short of endorsing my chosen methodology but if you are a youth coach in the U.S. ready to make a paradigm shift, I urge you to do your research. Search for Johan Cruyff, total soccer, geo cognitive soccer, Todd Beane. If you're genuinely devoted to developing your players to their full potential, you'll know it when you find it.Good luck. The future of U.S. soccer is waiting.

Detailed insight on each position and what is required for the modern game with excellent training sessions for each position. I enjoyed the quotes from top players and managers in the game. And most importantly, explains how to bring all pillars of the game into each position. Technical, Tactical, Physical and, Mental.

The book every coach should have in their library.

Fantastic book! Gary breaks down the responsibilities and training needs of every position in a clear, concise manner. I highly recommend this book and Gary Curneen if you're a coach or player who wants to learn more about modern soccer training methods!

Another coaching gem from Coach Curneen! This is book is a must have in every coach's library. Both new and experienced coaches will benefit from reading this and his previous book.

This book was great, I do 1-on-1 training as well as team. But this book gave me more ideas and spins to put on my current 1-on-1 training as well as implementing specific positional training within my teams.

A "must buy" for any soccer coach. This book will help motivate and inspire!

fantastic break down of training exercises from the viewpoint of how the modern soccer coach needs to train his/her team. great resource when used with Curneen's first book, The Modern Soccer Coach!
