It's confusing at times, and for a short book, it feels meandering and lacking incisive direction (this may reflect the translation and different criteria for social science writing).That being said, parts are quite interesting, and opens windows on the last decade of Ottoman society. We learn about CUP (Young Turks), the educational and military society of the Ottomans, inter-ethnic cooperation and tensions, and a couple of curious interludes (Turkish officers sent to Siberia make ther way back to the ME via Mongolia, China, and central Asia, an epic story for which there are, sadly, few details). Also we get a peek into the embryonic Arab nationalist salons that were forming at the time. Also, we are shown surprising elements that explain later stuff, like that there was really no "Palestinian" nationalism in the first 3 decades of the 20th Century, that Arabs of the Palestinian Mandate looking for self-determination were aiming for either a co-dominion with Egypt or being part of a "Greater Syria," which explains why there was no effort to form the Arab state envisioned in the 1947 partition - it had no advocates on the Arab side.All in all, useful for deeper understanding the period, but not a "good" read.

The Arab world has three major political metropolites: Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo. And three major religious civilizations: Meccah, Median and Holy Mosque in Jerusalem. I bought this book for my 4 yr old grand-daughter just over 4 months ago, but was concerned it may not be appropriate for her 1 yr old sister. The 4 yr old enjoyed it and then moved on to other books. However, it has remained a FAVORITE for her 15 month old sister who is now almost 20 months old and does all the appropriate actions herself: shaking, tilting, spinning the book; blowing, tickling, petting the monster and making the noises. She loves it and it has not left the must read pile in 5 months. When an adult decides they've read enough in one sitting (5-6 times), she'll just "read" it herself.

My 2 year old is obcessed with this book! He loves interacting with it. He wants mommy to read “Monster” every night haha. It’s a simple book, like all children’s books should be. Fun interaction with basic words that are used repeatedly to help learn the word. My son has no issue with “the monster in your room” portion BECAUSE I don’t make a big deal out of it. He just smiles and goes “oh no monster! Where you go?!” Then he giggles and says he’s hiding. Then we call him back and “peekaboo! There he is! He came back!”. You also know your kid best so filter what you need and make something up as you go if you need to. Bright simple illustrations. Happy this was one of our first prime kids books subscription box items.

My kiddo is scared of monsters, always talks about them being in the house so I got this for her as a birthday present and she LOVES this book.A. its a cute monsterB. its something they can get involves it. 'tickle the monster, blow on him, talk to him'The first time we read this book, we read it 3 times in a row. Its such a cute book!

My four year old loves this book (as does my 7 year old)! They love the interaction while reading rather than just being read to. I don't know that I appreciate the yelling right before bed time but it's so much fun!I also appreciate making monsters cute creatures, not something to fear.

This book is delightful. My 2 1/2 year-old son thinks it is both hilarious and at times a little scary but it gives him enough control that he can find resolve and enjoy the ending of the book. At first I was a little concerned that he would be scared that the monster is “in his room” for part of the book but like I said, it has a pleasant ending and he asks to read it every night.

Cute book. My son likes it. The only reason I give it 4 stars is that it seems like a rip-off from a couple other books my son has. This monster look eerily like another little yellow monster that eats his way through books and the "story line" is very similar to a dot book that he has. But it's fun and my son enjoys it.

My grandchildren and I love this book. I read it just today to the 3-year old. It is interactive and fun. I like it that the cute little monster snuggles up and goes to sleep at the end of the story. That makes it the perfect bedtime story.

Every review of the app states the same thing, that is does not function and the content that is supposed to come with the book purchase can not be unlocked. Unfortunate as the book itself is what I was hoping for but I expected the app to work as well.

First, the good: extensive vocabulary with pictures, in color, in categories, pleasing to the eye. That's a fun way to learn for someone who already can pronounce the words. Now, the bad: spelling errors! in a dictionary! On p. 8, almond in French is spelled as "amende" , twice, when it should be "amande". On p. 267, mattress is spelled ending with a " t" instead of "matelas", which would be correct. This book only arrived yesterday and I saw these two errors just quickly scanning the book. As a retired French teacher, I am hugely disappointed in DK Publishing letting this book be printed and sold as accurate. It is not. At the very least, the company should go through the book again, proofread, and issue an errata page.

This is a tiny picture book that has thousands, if not tens of thousands of words packed in. The index contains about 4500 words, but I'm sure there are actually loads more. It'll be one of the smaller books on your bookshelf, but there are 360 very compact pages with a lot of information. It's thematically arranged, and for example, there are two pages dedicated to baseball, two to bicycles, four for vegetables and four for fruits. And hundreds of other pages dedicated to many interesting topics. Each Spanish word has an English translation. I also really like how for some words it gives both a Latin American Spanish translation and a Spain Spanish translation. For example, the beans translates to los frijoles in Latin America and las alubias in Spain. But, there are also specific words for dozens of types of beans, like las habas for the fava beans.The pages are really high quality, and the pictures are bright and extremely vibrant. The pages are a little thicker than most pages, too, so it shouldn't tear much. The print is small because the book is small, though. I have pretty good eyes, so the small print didn't bother me, but if you have any kind of eye problems, you might not like this book very much.But overall this is awesome, and you really should add this to your library if you're learning Spanish. There are more useful words with pictures in this book than any other Spanish learning book that I've found.

So I read the reviews and am convinced to use this instead of my usual Oxford picture dictionary. I never had problems with the Oxford series, but I thought I'd give this a try. I open it up and immediately find that "doctor" is translated as "le doctor". Excuse me? Anyone who has ever contributed to Doctors Without Borders knows that the French word for doctor is "mèdecin". I found a couple of similar errors, so I don't trust this dictionary very much. It is easy to carry, colorful, and easy to read, but it also has fewer words than the Oxford series.Have a second dictionary on hand if you insist on using this -- to check their translations!

What a fun dictionary. I enjoy just looking at the photos and seeing many words that relate to one topic. For example, if you want to know what various parts of a car are called, it's quite easy to see most of them on a few pages. Also, like the pictures of food with their names. I even recommended it to a French friend to help her with her English. It won't replace your regular dictionary, but it's a useful addition.

Wow, what a great little book jam packed with info and clear photos. Note that this goes way beyond food groups and household stuff, all the way to the innards of pregnancy and other medical funsies, so prepare yourself for some eye popping photos, especially if you are using this with kids. (Not gross, just clear. The kind of clear you want if you are in a foreign hospital or doctor's office, so I'm glad they included it.)This is, hands down, a required resource for language learning. It's abundantly clear and helpful. I wish I had it years ago.

I have been visiting a young man from Central America for the past year. He fled for his life and while seeking asylum and is being held in an immigration detention center. Our visits are challenging as they are by phone with a large, thick piece of glass between us. He told me he wanted to learn English and so my Early Childhood Education background clicked in and I began with the body parts. I would point to my nose and he would say, "nose"... hand, foot, etc. I wanted to get him a picture dictionary and so I went to Amazon and this one was highly rated so I checked it out. When I 'Looked Inside' the first page that came up was on Body Parts and so I purchased it and had it sent to him at the Detention Center. I have not seen this book, BUT the reaction I got from this young man is why I gave it 5 stars. He went on and on (generally shy and quiet) telling me about all the different categories AND how everyone in his barracks circled around him to look at it. They all liked it and some offered to buy it from him. :)

This is illustrated fiction. It isn't your average graphic novel. Imagine a book where most pages have their own illustrations. If you're looking for a titillating tale with hard-core lesbian "action" then this isn't the book for you.This reads like a true story and is told from the perspective of a flawed, vulnerable and entirely human prostitute. The writing is so intimate and unguarded that reading it felt almost voyeuristic. The writing is brutal, honest and beautiful. The illustrations frame the story in an equally brutal, honest and beautiful way. They serve to compliment the narrative and do not distract you from the story. It's clear to me that the illustrator and the writer shared the same vision here.The only detractor from what I would otherwise recommend as a "must buy" is the large number of typos. I'm not sure whether this was intentional, but it was extremely distracting. The typos made the book feel a little unpolished.

Rent Girl is the story of a lesbian trying to make it in the world, when she finds out about her friend being an escort. Next thing you know she finds herself as a prostitute. This is where we read about her finding the work truly deplorable and how she hates men. She moves to the West coast and finds a new girlfriend and together they attempt to become drug dealers in order to visit Greece. When they realize they aren't cut out to be dealers, she gets back into prostitution, without getting the guys involved. Which is to say that she would put on lesbian shows with her girlfriend. In a nutshell, they can't afford the trip to Greece so they go to Disneyland instead.Grammatically, the book is an absolute mess. Not knowing the difference between then and than, multiple misspelled words, and half the time I wasn't really sure who was supposed to be speaking. I thought the illustrations did a good job of capturing her different emotions when it came to the difference of her being with the men, and then being with the women.

Ultimately, this book leaves me cold. The premise sounds good, a lesbian hooker's kiss and tell plus pictures but after a promising beginning, describing an invite-only party her madame throws the story falters. The main reason for this is that the narrator appears to have only one attitude towards other people: sneering contempt. This doesn't say much about these other people but it says a lot about the narrator. And thus one loses interest in her rapidly.Add atrocious (i.e. non-existent) editing, numerous spelling errors and the constant substitution of `than' with `then' and the picture that emerges is that of an author who appears to think that a memoir is worth reading simply because the author happens to be a part of the queer community. I am sorry, but it is not. Being self-absorbed and condescending doesn't make you a good writer, queer or not. I'd much rather read Dorothy Allison or Patrick Califia for that matter.A shame, really, because the idea does sound good and the illustrations by Laurenn McGubbin are quite nice.

This was the first Graphic Novel/Memoir that this reviewer has ever read. The closest thing to the experience was the comic books, children's books and "Mad" magazine of my youth and teenage years. My first impression of this graphic memoir was shock. A spade is called a spade as casually, naturally and normally as in the long vanished Pre-Politically Correct World. I had read only the first few pages of the book when I felt that I was delving into hard porn. Then I realized Michelle Tea was using the same frank, honest style of writing that I use, albeit less skillfully, in my own private diary. One doesn't usually censor themselves when writing in their private diary. This book is like an illustrated private diary. The well-done illustrations by Laurenn McCubbin include lots of nudity and fetish dress but are strangely sexless, joyless and non-provocative, much like the world of the sex workers described by the author. The artist/illustrator has an excellent command of subtle facial expressions and body language. Judging from the actual pictures of the writer and illustrator at the end of the book, the artist was doing a lot of self-portraits to achieve the needed expressions and proper body language. The main character is a 21-year old living in Boston and sharing an apartment with a lesbian lover who makes her living as an escort while she completes her MBA at a nearby Boston college. This living situation soon results in the heroine deciding to try her hand at escorting since she is having sex so much anyway, she figures she might as well get paid for some of it. She soon has her own advertisements in the "Adult Section" of the "Boston Phoenix." Her humorous insights into her actual "Teen Dream" and "College Co-Ed" ads as opposed to an advertisement for "Confused Lesbian Slacker With No Saleable Job Skills," which she felt would have better described her are a riot. Another amusing section of the memoir deals with crabs. It takes a really good writer to make that experience fun and entertaining. This memoir of the so-called "post-punk subculture of queer urban girls" of the 1990's is an amazingly blunt look at that world of lesbians, prostitution (usually referred to as "escorting"), unsuccessful attempts at dealing drugs and the eternal search for love and companionship. The incredibly accurately described locales of both Provincetown (MA) and the Mission District of San Francisco seem to come alive for the reader. After 10 years of experimenting as a modestly successful sex worker and failed drug dealer the main character begins and a long-term relationship with an 18-year old lover and their May-December relationship adventures make up the remainder of this memoir. The memoir leaves the reader hanging and wanting more. This Graphic Novel/Memoir is an interesting reading adventure because of the excellent writing and illustration skills combined so effectively into a single volume. It's definitely not for prudes, but it does provide a peek into several alternative lifestyles and the sleazy underbelly of the underground economy that are the realms of the sex workers and drug trade.

Bill Bryson is at it again, he is back to telling history from an unique and witty perspective. With "At Home" Bryson wanders through his mid-1800s home and offers a bit about its history. I really do mean, "A bit" because while Bill Bryson begins in a particular room, such as the kitchen, dining rom, and etc. but he rarely stays there long. instead we are taken on tangets throughout history.We discover the meaning of words (such a "Chairman" and "Room & Board")that routinely pop-up in our daily lexicon... but when taken singularly... really don't make much sense. Why do we call it "The Boardroom" when it houses the CEO of a powerful company. Bill Bryson provided answers to this and countless other unique question.Final Verdict - while "At Home" really is not a history of the home, but it is a chance to indulge in 300+ of Bill Bryson wit and ecletic tid-bits of information.'4 1/2 stars - A must read for any Bryson fan!

Simply wonderful. I work at Winterthur Museum which is sometimes/often said to be the home of the world's foremost collection of American antiques. Guides were impassioned in their love for this book as it explained in great & wonderful detail everything that wonderful Winterthur is all about.AND it has broad appeal. Knowing that my engineer spouse would find some fascination in it I plugged it into the car's CD player when we were locked in its embrace for 8 hours...& he loved it. We talked about finer points raised in the book endlessly & thoroughly enjoyed both the book & what would ordinarily be a painfully boring trip we know all too well.For our next road trip I've got Bryson's book on 1927....I am just hoping he doesn't read it himself as he isn't the best representative of his own work. If you accept his Iowan birth, he comes across as stuffy & pretentious because of his diction which is full of British overtones having lived there so long. If you accept him as a citizen of the world, he can't honestly represent Des Moines. He should just shut up & write - a lot!

LOVE THIS BOOK! I enjoyed every single page! It's a big book and took me forever because I only had time for several pages each time I picked it up. Learned SO much about the history of homes and of England. I even learned that Christopher Columbus didn't discover North America. I always enjoy a Bill Bryson book. He's an amazing author and has a wonderful way with words. I recommend any of his books. If you want to discover where people used to sleep, the origins of glass, how people lived...you can discover all that and more in these pages.

This is the year I have become a big fan of Bill Bryson! The reporter who was born in Iowa and lived a good portion of his life in Great Britain is a wonderful tour guide to the mundane realities of life and science. In At Home he invites us into the Victorian vicarage where he lived for many years. We tour the home exploring each room such as the bathroom, bedroom, garden, dining room, cellar etc. We learn all about furniture, food consumption, clothing, crops, tea, salt, pepper and many other fascinating subjects. He traces the growth of industry and technology as the industrial revolution is examined. We learn much about how people in the past had to deal with disease, death, childbirth, education and existing from day to day. The past was a different country where life was often hard, brutal and short. Bryson is a man of erudition and wit who takes us into how ordinary people have lived in the past. This is a long book which is a great way to learn history and science in a painless way. Bill Bryson is a national treasure and you cannot go wrong in reading any of his books; this book published in 2010 is a gem!

I am really enjoying this book though I find I am forgetting what I've read almost as soon as I have read it! That is because there is SO much information in here! I enjoy Mr. Brysons writing, it is like listening to a charming and well read friend. If ind I prefer to own his books (rather than borrow from the library) so that I can jump in and out of the conversation or refer back to them. This one in particular is crammed full of the intriguing histories of all sorts of unnoticed daily spaces and objects. I feel as if I know my ancestors better after reading and therefore know myself a bit more. Quite a nice book if you like this sort of thing!

Bill Bryson never disappoints and this book is no exception. I read it several years ago, recommending it to everyone I knew. Such fascinating material for him to work with and he works with all material so well. When I saw it was available in an audio book I decided to buy it for an upcoming drive from Florida to New England. We enjoyed it very much. Nothing personal to the author but I know he's an American so I did find his British "ness" terminology a bit annoying. Having lived overseas for many years and knowing many people taught in British English, I full well know how easy it is to pick up their interesting terminology, still I found it somewhat difficult to put up with coming from a mostly American accent. . Overall though I enjoyed the audio version and I recommend it and the book itself highly.

This was a selection for my 10 year old daughter who has been playing piano now for 3 years. The black music print on the inside is crisp and easy to read. The paperweight, while not cardstock, is still of heavy weight and relatively stiff. This will last for years to come as we have younger children who will take lessons in the future.While not an issue with the printer, the product was shipped without any support (meaning, no sheet of stiff board or cardboard with it that would have kept it from being wrinkled). We put it underneath a couple heavy dictionaries for a couple weeks and the wrinkles were pretty smoothed out. I won't ding any stars for the product. I will instead leave feedback for Amazon's shipping.I will buy again.

The arrangement is easy enough for a amateur of limited skill to play, but the harmonic richness of Bach's conception seems to lose something by being thus stripped down. This is not the thrilling sound of the Myra Hess arrangement, used by Dinu Lipatti, for one. But that one requires a bit more effort, and a good sized reach of each hand.

I really like it. Simply and nice arrangement.

The same deal happened to me as previously stated, the sheet music came wrinkled and torn but was not worth sending back because it's only $4. Absolutely gorgeous piece of music and Alfred's sheet music and interpretations are the best! Bach for life!
