She found Suharto surprisingly candid when she apologized for the extra security that limited the venue of her ASEAN meeting to a hotel flush against the water of Manila Bay and beside the US Embassy. He said, "Oh, don't apologize, why do you think I take General Murdani with me all the time. I don't feel safe leaving him behind." This was greeted by laughter except from Mahathir. Murdani smiled sheepishly. Lee quipped that he put his son in the military just to make sure. Mahathir looked on with ill-concealed contempt of the frivolous turn the talks had taken, and in particular of Mrs. Aquino. He kept imposing his views during the meeting. She asked me later if I didn't find him arrogant but that was all. Mrs Aquino disliked any vulgarity because it was, I guess, vulgar. She was well brought up and went to convent school in New York. An ill word never escaped her lips except once when a trusted ally sided with a coup attempt against and she called him a blue bottle fly. She regretted this. I said I would write the publisher. She assumed I was familiar with the book. Mercifully I failed to contact any publisher. The book I had in mind was a simpering and flattering account of Asian godfathers by someone else. Mr Studwell's is after all the book she meant. I am sorry to be so late in clarifying that she never called anyone least of all Mr Lee "an arrogant bastard;" she rather liked him even if he was open about his contempt of the American-style democracy she had just restored.All that off my chest, let me say that I have not stopped recommending How Asia Works to every thinking person in my country, starting with Solita Monsod, our chief economist, who fought for serious agrarian reform and forfeited her post as a result. My father fought for it in the 50s, 60s and 70s until his arrest upon the declaration of martial law. The defense minister who had my father arrested--he was the publisher of the largest circulation and most prestigious political magazine in the country, the Free Press--told him that martial law was the answer to his prayer for agrarian reform because without the bother of democracy, it would finally be seriously implemented. "Then why did you arrest me?" my father asked. "You have a bad temper and might have reacted strongly to our new approach." How Asia Works vindicates the failed work of many like him and Solita Monsod. Their work was discredited by so-called informed opinion that land reform anyway does not work despite best efforts, the rural poor are too stupid to farm their own farms, and at any rate it is too late if it does work. I turned to Asian Godfathers after How Asia Works. It puts down in black and white what was merely rumored, the staggering scale of Southeast Asian corruption and detailed explanation of how it works and works still. If I ever find myself a publisher of a newspaper again, I will insist that all business reporters and analysts be tested on their command of Studwell's theses. I understand now what people like my father fought for and why it would have worked if only planters had not stood in the way and we had elected leaders who would push them out of the way if they tried.What a pity, what lost opportunity. I am curious only why, in Asian Godfathers, the author is not as detailed about corruption in the Philippines as he is about it in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong of all places, and worse under the British at that. Either our godfathers did not steal as much or they are better at concealing their loot than their counterparts in the rest of the region.

Interesting overview of southeast Asian business circa the Asian financial crisis organized around the Asian tycoons who have made fortunes in league with corrupt government officials. The author's story is a sorry one with government officials essentially ripping off tax dollars and their own citizens in order to benefit some of the richest men on the planet. The tycoons are not portrayed as talented businessmen, just very corrupt and entirely self interested. The author gives some background on the history of these countries/city states (Sing., HK, Malaysia, Thailand & Indonesia) and how this corruption took hold. Not clear if the author's grim perspective is entirely fair and whether some of the excesses at least in Sing. and maybe HK have been partially corrected. Would be worthwhile for the author to update the book given the time that has passed since the events and publication.

I bought this believing the positive reviews and description. Just goes to show you. This author can't write. He's stiff, dry, repetitive. All I'm left with is that Asian billionaire "godfathers" with underlings that do the heavy lifting exist.The author lays out his "intentions" in a 30 page intro that's unreadable styrofoam. You never get a sense of who these people are, what they're like. You never even get a feel for the individual differences between them. It's no big secret that rich guys and government are tied at the hip. I expected to be fascinated by this subject and was not.

Studwell rejects the racial explanation of SEA problems and instead pins most of the blame for the region's underperformance to the lack of political will (or some say conscience) of the political elites of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Insightful, and well written.

In 1974 Anton Szandor LaVey, High Priest of the Church of Satan, sent me a copy of the first edition of _OTP_. Anton was not a cruel or sadistic person, but he regarded humanity with the indifferent cynicism of a carnival showman: society is divided simply into the shearers and the sheep. If you're not one, you're the other. Anton saw the social aspect of his Satanism as an exposé of mainstream Judæo-Christianity in this dichotomy; he did not think that his _Satanic Bible_ had to be either long or complicated to make the point. _OTP_, he remarked, was an "economic SB". When you read the copy you should order right now, you'll see exactly what he meant.The nations of the world are either autocracies (monarchy or dictatorship) or oligarchies (formal or informal cabals of military and/or economic elites). All routtinely claim to be "public servants", working for the interests of the entire citizenry. As long as this image is maintained, by a mixture of propaganda and force, the autocracy/oligarchy remains in power. If it fails, the result is revolution and the eventual institution of a new, similar elite. Yes, this is a very harsh, banal, and depressing portrait of humanity; it is unfortunately also coldly realistic. The "science-fiction" of George Orwell's _1984_ has quietly become the contemporary way of life._OTP_ was a shocker in 1974 when it methodically and dispassionately instructed a fledgling oligarch concerning his powers and prerogatives. I am frankly curious whether it will retain anything of this shock today, or whether readers will simply nod their heads at its explicit confirmation of their experience. Either way it is a decisive literary confrontation - and, true to Anton's summation, a concise one. The first edition was only 56 pages long, including a zinger of a bibliography. But those 56 pages are all it needs to make its point.As a Political Science Ph.D. and professor, I've studied and taught the world's greatest altruists and optimists as well as the cynics and skeptics. Personally I am a Platonic idealist, and so _OTP_ is rather the Lovecraftian monster that I earnestly hope won't break through into this dimension. But the rattling of that iron gate in the cellar keeps getting louder ...

I wish the Transcriber had covered the income tax a bit more thoroughly and that he would have elaborated on the controlled-media propaganda machinery. Quibbles. [On a personal note, in current times (2010+) my understanding of the corporotocracy/toxocracy has taken a turn toward the view of the Thrive movement, et al, which has elicited more than a few contrary emotional reactions on my site from Mr. Transcriber. We both live in the greater Detroit area.]As honest journalists and ‘causality theorists,’ we cannot close the book on further inquiry… that may augment or even contradict an earlier consensus. That said, Occult is a book that demands to be resurrected and handed out to your friends and acquaintances in all walks of life. It is a forthright look at the system we find ourselves living in today from the perspective of an inductee into the supposed organization pulling all the strings in the background. I got a real kick out of this book and read it in one sitting. This book is for both the cynic who already knows and the novice taking their first steps into the field. I love the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. It's a nice touch.

Excellent commentaries and illustrations

Very well organized and illustrated.

This matches others I have had for years, but now at seder, we had enough so no one had to share.

Yes, This is the standard Haggadah of the CONSERVATIVE movement in America. It is paperbacked, sturdy, and has a colorful cover with the Hebrews crossing the Sea of blue waves. It reads RIGHT to LEFT. 144 Pages. Opens with a page for Erev Pesah, the Search for Hametz, and a page on the deeper meaning of Hametz in our "puffed up" subverted lives. The seder readings follow in Hebrew text with facing English translations. The MARGINS of the Hebrew pages and English pages are filled with running commentaries and quick tidbits that can be read by the leaders and those assembled at the table. There are many nuggets in here. For example, the commentary on the response to the "wicked child" teaches that the words atually mean "set his teeth on edge." Of course, the commentary advises that one shouldn't physically hit, but just use a witty retort. Or a comment on how the heck Miriam and her sister slaves had timbrels. There are no Transliterations. The Four Sons are rendered as Four CHILDREN. Contains both a Full Grace after Meals and a Short Version of Grace. Contains a section on the Holocaust and the slavery of the last century. Contains Hallel and Counting of the Omer. Closes with Ki Lo Na'eh, Adir Hu, Ehad Mi Yadeia, Had Gadya.

This is an official (not "the" official) haggadah of Conservative Judaism. Why the distinction? There never has been any one, authoritative version of the haggadah for any movement. For those who are into Jewish books, it's interesting to note that the original version of this haggadah was edited by Rabbi Michael Strassfeld, author of the famed "The Jewish Catalog". After publishing this work for all members of the Rabbinical Assembly for discussion, Rachel Anne Rabinowicz came on board next as editor of the project. She brought the work to its final form.This haggadah follows the traditional Hebrew text, with an accurate, modern English translation. Along the way, as with haggadahs in the past, some sections were dropped (especially the ones felt to be obscure) and replaced with other rabbinic texts, as well modern writings. The editors took care to link the Exodus to events in our own day, including the Holocaust, the persecution of Jews in foreign nations, and the establishment of the State of Israel. Through a judicious choice of texts, the role of women and men in Jewish history, and the seder itself, is made clear. The center of every page has a Hebrew text and English translation. A terrific feature is that this is surrounded by an English commentary, elaborating and elucidating the text, without disrupting the flow of the service. Clear instructions and explanations take the reader through all of the Seder.

It's the social-historical analysis of (very) short selections form one soldier by a scoiologist, mingled with the diaries and life events of two other (unrelated) Ottoman soldiers. It's confusing at times, and for a short book, it feels meandering and lacking incisive direction (this may reflect the translation and different criteria for social science writing).That being said, parts are quite interesting, and opens windows on the last decade of Ottoman society. We learn about CUP (Young Turks), the educational and military society of the Ottomans, inter-ethnic cooperation and tensions, and a couple of curious interludes (Turkish officers sent to Siberia make ther way back to the ME via Mongolia, China, and central Asia, an epic story for which there are, sadly, few details). Also we get a peek into the embryonic Arab nationalist salons that were forming at the time. Also, we are shown surprising elements that explain later stuff, like that there was really no "Palestinian" nationalism in the first 3 decades of the 20th Century, that Arabs of the Palestinian Mandate looking for self-determination were aiming for either a co-dominion with Egypt or being part of a "Greater Syria," which explains why there was no effort to form the Arab state envisioned in the 1947 partition - it had no advocates on the Arab side.All in all, useful for deeper understanding the period, but not a "good" read.

The Arab world has three major political metropolites: Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo. And three major religious civilizations: Meccah, Median and Holy Mosque in Jerusalem. Regionals such as Iran and Turkey should understand that once and for all. The Arab world is their centre, faith, strategic depth and their salvation...not just understand, also appreciate.

I bought this book for my 4 yr old grand-daughter just over 4 months ago, but was concerned it may not be appropriate for her 1 yr old sister. The 4 yr old enjoyed it and then moved on to other books. However, it has remained a FAVORITE for her 15 month old sister who is now almost 20 months old and does all the appropriate actions herself: shaking, tilting, spinning the book; blowing, tickling, petting the monster and making the noises. She loves it and it has not left the must read pile in 5 months. When an adult decides they've read enough in one sitting (5-6 times), she'll just "read" it herself.

My 2 year old is obcessed with this book! He loves interacting with it. He wants mommy to read “Monster” every night haha. It’s a simple book, like all children’s books should be. Fun interaction with basic words that are used repeatedly to help learn the word. My son has no issue with “the monster in your room” portion BECAUSE I don’t make a big deal out of it. He just smiles and goes “oh no monster! Where you go?!” Then he giggles and says he’s hiding. Then we call him back and “peekaboo! There he is! He came back!”. You also know your kid best so filter what you need and make something up as you go if you need to. Bright simple illustrations. Happy this was one of our first prime kids books subscription box items.

My kiddo is scared of monsters, always talks about them being in the house so I got this for her as a birthday present and she LOVES this book.A. its a cute monsterB. its something they can get involves it. 'tickle the monster, blow on him, talk to him'The first time we read this book, we read it 3 times in a row. Its such a cute book!

My four year old loves this book (as does my 7 year old)! They love the interaction while reading rather than just being read to. I don't know that I appreciate the yelling right before bed time but it's so much fun!I also appreciate making monsters cute creatures, not something to fear.

This book is delightful. My 2 1/2 year-old son thinks it is both hilarious and at times a little scary but it gives him enough control that he can find resolve and enjoy the ending of the book. At first I was a little concerned that he would be scared that the monster is “in his room” for part of the book but like I said, it has a pleasant ending and he asks to read it every night.

Cute book. My son likes it. The only reason I give it 4 stars is that it seems like a rip-off from a couple other books my son has. This monster look eerily like another little yellow monster that eats his way through books and the "story line" is very similar to a dot book that he has. But it's fun and my son enjoys it.

My grandchildren and I love this book. I read it just today to the 3-year old. It is interactive and fun. I like it that the cute little monster snuggles up and goes to sleep at the end of the story. That makes it the perfect bedtime story.

I have purchased many DK books in the past and I love the visual presentation and organization of the books and this one is no different. However the book is advertised as having a companion app for mobile devices. This unfortunately is where a serious problem lies. The app does not function, at all, for anyone. Every review of the app states the same thing, that is does not function and the content that is supposed to come with the book purchase can not be unlocked. Unfortunate as the book itself is what I was hoping for but I expected the app to work as well.

First, the good: extensive vocabulary with pictures, in color, in categories, pleasing to the eye. That's a fun way to learn for someone who already can pronounce the words. Now, the bad: spelling errors! in a dictionary! On p. 8, almond in French is spelled as "amende" , twice, when it should be "amande". On p. 267, mattress is spelled ending with a " t" instead of "matelas", which would be correct. This book only arrived yesterday and I saw these two errors just quickly scanning the book. As a retired French teacher, I am hugely disappointed in DK Publishing letting this book be printed and sold as accurate. It is not. At the very least, the company should go through the book again, proofread, and issue an errata page.

This is a tiny picture book that has thousands, if not tens of thousands of words packed in. The index contains about 4500 words, but I'm sure there are actually loads more. It'll be one of the smaller books on your bookshelf, but there are 360 very compact pages with a lot of information. It's thematically arranged, and for example, there are two pages dedicated to baseball, two to bicycles, four for vegetables and four for fruits. And hundreds of other pages dedicated to many interesting topics. Each Spanish word has an English translation. I also really like how for some words it gives both a Latin American Spanish translation and a Spain Spanish translation. For example, the beans translates to los frijoles in Latin America and las alubias in Spain. But, there are also specific words for dozens of types of beans, like las habas for the fava beans.The pages are really high quality, and the pictures are bright and extremely vibrant. The pages are a little thicker than most pages, too, so it shouldn't tear much. The print is small because the book is small, though. I have pretty good eyes, so the small print didn't bother me, but if you have any kind of eye problems, you might not like this book very much.But overall this is awesome, and you really should add this to your library if you're learning Spanish. There are more useful words with pictures in this book than any other Spanish learning book that I've found.

So I read the reviews and am convinced to use this instead of my usual Oxford picture dictionary. I never had problems with the Oxford series, but I thought I'd give this a try. I open it up and immediately find that "doctor" is translated as "le doctor". Excuse me? Anyone who has ever contributed to Doctors Without Borders knows that the French word for doctor is "mèdecin". I found a couple of similar errors, so I don't trust this dictionary very much. It is easy to carry, colorful, and easy to read, but it also has fewer words than the Oxford series.Have a second dictionary on hand if you insist on using this -- to check their translations!

What a fun dictionary. I enjoy just looking at the photos and seeing many words that relate to one topic. For example, if you want to know what various parts of a car are called, it's quite easy to see most of them on a few pages. Also, like the pictures of food with their names. I even recommended it to a French friend to help her with her English. It won't replace your regular dictionary, but it's a useful addition.

Wow, what a great little book jam packed with info and clear photos. Note that this goes way beyond food groups and household stuff, all the way to the innards of pregnancy and other medical funsies, so prepare yourself for some eye popping photos, especially if you are using this with kids. (Not gross, just clear. The kind of clear you want if you are in a foreign hospital or doctor's office, so I'm glad they included it.)This is, hands down, a required resource for language learning. It's abundantly clear and helpful. I wish I had it years ago.

I have been visiting a young man from Central America for the past year. He fled for his life and while seeking asylum and is being held in an immigration detention center. Our visits are challenging as they are by phone with a large, thick piece of glass between us. He told me he wanted to learn English and so my Early Childhood Education background clicked in and I began with the body parts. I would point to my nose and he would say, "nose"... hand, foot, etc. I wanted to get him a picture dictionary and so I went to Amazon and this one was highly rated so I checked it out. When I 'Looked Inside' the first page that came up was on Body Parts and so I purchased it and had it sent to him at the Detention Center. I have not seen this book, BUT the reaction I got from this young man is why I gave it 5 stars. He went on and on (generally shy and quiet) telling me about all the different categories AND how everyone in his barracks circled around him to look at it. They all liked it and some offered to buy it from him. :)
