I bought this for my 8 year old son, who is a very good reader but does not read for pleasure on his own (he does, however enjoy reading together). So I thought, hmm, how can I get him to read independently? I myself was and am an avid reader, so this was never a problem for me. I noticed that he had been bringing home Lego Star Wars themed graphic novels. I heard that graphic novels are a good way to get reluctant readers more into it, so I thought we'd try out this series, anything as long as he was reading words on a page for fun! Lo and behold, he read 2 of the books on his own, unbidden, during a car trip! Highly recommended!

My son loves the Amulet series but wasn't so enthusiastic about the Explorer books. More like a cartoonish comic strip than graphic novel.

EDITED by Kazu - not written by. The short stories are ok, but after getting hoked on Amulet, was expecting more connectedness.

Received in great condition, my daughter was excited to read this book.

Graphic novel that is sure to appeal to boys.

This book is a true visual feast for the eye. The stories are simple (with complexity hidden for the adult reader) but the artworks is almost overwhelming in is stunning beauty.

I really miss the larger Flight anthologies. But Explorer series is holding it's own. This wasn't as good as Flight or Amulet, but it does bring a nice variety of stories. A bit dark...so not sure if this is recommended for younger kids.

My son is a Kibuishi fan and loved this series!

We have all gotten use to the Gunfighter handle that Adams has been known for;but this is the most detailed look at some of Clint's tools he uses in his profession,on page 80;and how he uses his honed skills and tools to find out the source of a rather common rifle. In Adam's travels he encounters a wide vasriety of people,both good and bad.In this case,he gets involved in saving the life of someone no less important than the President,over 20 years after the Civil War,probably President Grover Cleveland,though the actual name is not given. Then there's the title "No Turning Back" which turns up several times throughout the novel.I found 4 occurrences;how many can you find? Quite a bit different from the typical Gunsmith yarns,noneless a great read with lots of suspense,intrigue and fast action.

Overall, I really like the recipes in this book. Many are simple enough that an intermediate-level cook could handle them easily. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners, however. And some of the specialized ingredients will make it difficult for those not near specialty markets. But overall, there are recipes here to suit most tastes.I always make at least three recipes from each cookbook I review, and this was no exception. I'm single, and several of the recipes lend themselves well to modification to reduce number of servings. So here are my three:Shaved Zucchini Salad with Lemon and Marjoram: VERY nice! I love the play of the lemon, flowery marjoram and salty romano cheese against the fresh zucchini. I cut the measurements in half to get 2 substantial servings. This is a keeper for sure!Pan-seared Halibut with Lemon Relish: I live in the Pacific NW, so getting really good fresh fish is never a problem. I've done pan-seared a lot using our local catch (salmon, cod, halibut, bass, etc.) quite often. So the novelty here for me was the lemon relish. Oh.My. This stuff is addictive! I can see using this for any white fish, and I may try it on chicken, too. It's a wonderful concoction of lemons, shallots, green olives, capers, a little salt and red pepper flakes, plus olive oil. YUM!David's Double-Lemon Dutch Baby: I cut the recipe in half and made it in a smaller 8" skillet -- worked just fine. If you're not familiar with a "dutch baby," it's a sort of cross between soufflé and pancake. It rises while it's baking, then collapses into a sort of hollow "bowl" that can serve as a receptacle for all kinds of goodness. This version has lemon in the batter as well as the topping. I added some frozen huckleberries to the finished product and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Another keeper, not difficult to put together, either.There are several recipes in the Staples chapter that you use in some of the recipes (lemon-infused olive oil, lemon curd, preserved lemons), as well as a chapter of Drinks that look particularly interesting, too.This is a small book, only 50 recipes, but beautifully put together and photographed. Would definitely make a nice hostess gift or addition to a cookbook collection. Solid 4 stars.

Only one recipe in the whole book that I would make. I love lemons and expected something more. The book itself is well made and attractive. Recipes are a disappointment.

This was a gift to my daughter, an aspiring pastry chef. We have a prolific Meyer lemon tree so lots of wonderful recipes to enjoy! Very inspiring and easy to follow. Great illustrations. This is NOT a lemon of a cookbook!

Nice cookbook and well rounded information and recipes. Not many just lemon cookbooks so I would recommend getting it if you have a regular lemon supply or like to use lemons in your cooking.

Arrived quickly and in great condition. I can't wait to make some of these recipes. It's not a large book with many recipes, but I guess I wouldn't expect it to have all that many. The illustrations are nice, and will look good displayed in my kitchen.

We received the book Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Love and Friendship by Kimberly Kirberger. The Chicken Soup books are well read books with good advice. This book will make a great addition to our Youth section in our library. Thank you so much.

The Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul series is a wonderful series written by teens for teens and this book is a spin-off, if you like, of that very successful, popular series.However, I found the stories and range of topics to be not quite as good as those found in the other teenage Chicken Soup books. The Friendship section had some beautiful stories in it as is to be expected from this series but I found some of the stores in other sections such as Growing Up to be cliched and boring. While I found it hard to put the other books down, this one was quite easy to put away.If you are looking for a really good Chicken Soup book I would recommend Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul II or even the first or third books rather than this one. Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul - Love & Friendship lacks the same edge and originality as the other books.

I love all the Chicken Soup books, especially the ones for teens. I have read all the teen ones and about 5 of the other ones. This one is my favorite so far. I wonder so much about how other girls feel about guys and relationships for real and I don't think anything has ever explained it better than some of the stories in this book. I have a boyfriend and I think we are going to break up soon and I was so scared. It really helps sto see other girls are ok and also guys really do have feelings.The friendship part was just as good, even though I didn't think it would be. It made me think about my friends and it made me want to treat them better. I guess I have been lucky becasue I am still friends with the same girls I was friends with in Jr high. Everyone should read this book. I loved it!!

Many people have these same problems in their life too, so they should read it too. Teens will learn many things between their loves, and their friendships. Teens show how they feel about their closest relationships. Teens are interviewed in their lives and some of their stories are in this book. In this book it tells the names of the person who is in the relationship, and their age. There are many stories in this book. I love about everything from this book. I have almost the same relationships and feelings as the people that are in this book are telling. I feel the same way as they do. The first quote I like is under the chapter Saying Good Bye. A teen is experiencing a moment when her best friend is leaving, are moving. The quote is, "Today I said good-bye to my best friend- the one person I have been able to count on for so many years." That is extremely sad. I had that experience once, when my best friend left me, but in this book it tells how she solves her problem. The Second quote is, Just One Look, That's All It Took." That was an amazing quote. That means love at first sight. The girl saw a boy and was in love because she thought he was cute. I had a moment like tat. I saw a guy that I thought was really cute, and I was in love at the first sight. I didn't really have a favorite part of the book. I liked the entire book. All the stories in this book are fantastic. I have almost the same problems. I love this book because it tells me that I am not the only one that is sad. I don't hate this book one bit. I want other people to read this because; they probably have the same problems too.

This book is a very good and interesting book to read. It has a lot of personal stories in it that help other people who are going through the same problems understand that they are not alone. The book covered many different topics and I think that's what made it so good. The different topics were; Falling In Love, Breaking Up, Friendship, Tough Times, Family And Love, Acts Of Kindness, and Growing Up. All these things are very critical to a teenager and this is what they all go through. I think the best topics in this book were Breaking Up and Family And Love. Those two were the most interesting to me. Also Friendship was very good because it shows you what other people have gone through with friendships and that one-day you will meet a stranger and they might turn out to be your best friend you ever had. Breaking Up was good because the stories were emotional. It seemed as if the short stories were happening to you and you experienced them as you read them. Also Family And Love was good. That showed you that you never know what you love till it is someday gone or something happens. This anthology is great to read. Every short story has an important meaning to it. You will learn a lot from it. It isn't boring either. I don't like reading but this book was something I couldn't put down. Every story was interesting in its own way. I hope if you ever get the chance to read it that you do because you won't regret it.

Maria Toorpakai is a professional squash player, currently ranked as Pakistan's top female player and 48th in the world. As a child growing up in a highly conservative tribal area of Pakistan where girls' involvement in sport was forbidden by the local Islamic culture, Toorpakai trained and competed as a boy in Peshawar. This books is so well written that it brought devastation so close to my heart. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and I was disappointed, gleefully. To see this defiant warrior find her ground and believe and trust herself, her God and her parents is the definition of love. I could find nothing that I didn't believe or was without raw with emotion. Her egotism didn't even stop me from loving this book. I have 2 complaints:-there is no mention of her brothers in the acknowledgement. Sadly this has left me disappointed and the word infidel-i felt slapped in the face. I was rooting for her and this family and I still am. Nothing is without its flaws. Thank you Maria-Genghis Khan for sharing your world and journey. You have opened my eyes.

This is story about one fearless young woman and her very brave family. It really shows the difference between Taliban. beliefs and true islam, something we all need to remember and understand. Maria and her family were relentless in pursuing their dreams and ideals despite the odds being against them and I admired the bonds the entire family had and how much they supported each other. Excellent read.

I really found this story interesting. It really helps to expand my knowledge of the larger world and what people have to overcome. It is a story that needs telling. It is not literature but it is well written and doesn't jump around. Another similar book that tells a story of a female growing up in Afghanistan is a Thousand Splendid Suns. Since most of history was written by men I'm finding it refreshing today to read quality books written by woman about strong women.

As I read I felt like I was right with these women and girls as they fought with the social obstacles that surround them. I came to admire and respect Maria's parents in the way they helped Maria be what she wanted to be. They put their lives and the lives of their children in the crosshairs of death by allowing their children the freedom to find their way. It is an inspiration to learn of what people must live through in order to make a difference in the world by helping others.Bobby Jean

I may not have read this book if it hadn't been picked by my book club, I would have missed out on an eye-opening experience. Seeing the world through Maria's life I have learned so much about a culture and region that I knew so little. It is hard to believe what she has faced in life simply because of her love of sports and being outdoors. It puts things in perspective.

An insight into the difference between the freedom of girls and boys under the Taliban. The parents definitely want an education for all their children but realize that school is not the best place for this daughter to be. It would be interesting to find out why her mother was allowed to teach and set up schools given the strictures placed on women.

Maria book is well written and so very insightful and candid. I am able to identify with her family, especially her father. For Father's Day I gave 3 additional copies to my 3 oldest grand daughters ages 14 through 17. They were confussed to receive a Father's Day gift from me. I said, "In addition to your summer readings, you will read about Maria. When everyone is finished the 4 of us will have a special dinner to review her story. Ladies, that is your Father's Day gift to me." Love, Paw Paw

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and the writing. The story of Maria and especially her father were so heartfelt. I can't imagine the risks her mother and father took to educate the young girls of their tribal areas of Pakistan. The support she received not only from her father and mother but also her brother and sister which continues to this day. I highly recommend this book for book group discussions as well. Can't wait to discuss at our book group this week. Thank you Maria Toorpakai for a beautiful story.

Didier Ghez is the author of Disney's Grand Tour, Disneyland Paris, They Drew as They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Golden Age: The 1930s, and They Drew as They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Musical Years: The 1940s. In 2018, Ghez received the prestigious June Foray Award for significant and benevolent impact on the art and industry of animation. He lives in Florida.Eric Goldberg is best known for his work with Walt Disney Anima¬tion Studios on Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hercules, and Moana. In February 2011, he was awarded the prestigious Winsor McCay Award from ASIFA-Hollywood for lifetime achievement in animation.Susan McKinsey Goldberg directed two sequences on Fantasia/2000, creating a unique look that garnered her the animation industry's highest honor, the Annie Award, for production design.

The Disney Company is unparalleled with it’s meticulous studio records and extensive production artwork spanning nine decades. The problem is getting them to put this material out for Disney connoisseurs and historians to enjoy. Didier Ghez has done us wonders with this series of books devoted to the concept artists who were influential at the studio over the years.This volume is probably the most colorful of all. Mary Blair has been one of the most celebrated of Disney artists. Her designs had warmth and a flair for color. As a fan of her work, any publication with fresh art is always a welcome surprise. And too much Mary Blair is never enough. Lots of never before published designs for Dumbo, The Three Caballeros, Melody Time, Cinderella, and Alice In Wonderland. Ive seen the actual Dodo impression, on page 91, on display at the Disney Family Museum. I’d like to see more concept art on the unproduced Carnival feature. This also answered my curiosity on if she did any designs for Sleeping Beauty (she did!) In volume one, Didier expressed that he would shy away from Mary Blair to focus on artists that haven’t been discussed before. I’m so glad he didn’t. The pieces he selected are beyond amazing.We also have, for the first time, an in depth discussion about her husband’s, Lee Blair’s, career. Lots of fresh art from Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Saludos Amigos. The chapters on John Dunn and Tom Oreb delve into Disneys foray into television and educational projects with very stylized designs. I presume this is the first publication to discuss the career of the controversial Walt Peregoy. From all accounts, past and fairly recent (he died in 2015) he was a very unpleasant person to interact with. But his designs have very beautiful and a striking use of color. We finally have a good representation of Peregoy’s Disney career.This series has struck a great balance of previously unseen art by both well known artists and artists that have never been discussed before. I hope The Disney Company will follow this example and unearth their treasures for Disney fans to see and for artists to be inspired by.I wonder what new treasures have been discovered for Volume 5.

As a former Imagineer, I recently attended a reunion at WDI. Didier's were the only Disney history books I saw in the House of Mouse (the in-house Disney store). They're so well researched, documented, and visually stunning that even the insiders appreciate what he has created. If you are a true Disney devotee or just appreciate concept art for it's own sake, these books will have pride of place on your shelf. PS . I was privileged to know some of the artists he has written about. It makes his books extra special.

This is the best entry so far in the "They Drew As They Pleased" series, which is really saying something because all are fantastic. This volume has the advantage of Mary Blair, of course, but the colorful and stylish pieces by Oreb, Peregoy and Dunn were a revelation and a delight for the senses. I've been curious to know more about Oreb and Peregoy's work for a while, and found those chapters satisfying. Dunn was new to me, and, wow. Ghez also accomplished the difficult task of showing me Mary Blair pieces I hadn't seen before. And the depth of his research, both in unearthing rare pieces and writing artist biographies, is evident and really pays off. Whether you Disney obsessively, enjoy midcentury illustration, or are just curious to see how the animated works begin as sketches and ideas, you cannot go wrong with this book or the series. I recommend all four, but this one is best for its vivid colors and bold designs; second best is probably volume 1.It's worth mentioning that another "midcentury" Disney book also came out recently. This one is the better of the two in terms of research and visuals, though its scope is narrower.I am keeping my fingers crossed for a series on Parks concept art next...

It is fascinating to delve into the animation creative process and discover the amazing concept art of some relatively unknown Disney artists of the 1950s and 1960s. Lee Blair’s concepts for Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Saludos Amigos are a joy to behold. Walt Peregoy’s background concepts for The Jungle Book are simply sublime. Previously unseen artwork from Mary Blair was a wonderful surprise. As always, the text is full of insight into the lives of the artists and the creative process at the Disney studio. I can’t wait for Volume 5!

Volume 4 of Didier Ghez's "They Drew As They Pleased" is my favorite of the series. Mid-century artwork is always a delight, so seeing Disney's creations from this time period is especially fascinating. As always, the author's scholarship advances our knowledge of artists who may have been underappreciated by the public during their lifetime. Didier's chronicling of their creative contributions is a fitting testament to these artists' lasting legacies. Highly recommended!

Disney concept art from the 1950s might be my favorite as they are the films that I grew up with. Disney historian, Didier Ghez, has done his usual incredible job in this new volume. Thorough research and investigation into the lives of these wonderful artists make for a fascinating read. As usual, Didier hunts down treasured art pieces that have never before been published. To a Disney art lover, like myself, opening this volume is like gaining admission to a private showing of Disney masters. You will not regret owning this volume.

With a series as magnificent at this it’s difficult to pick a favorite volume, though if pressed I would say volume 4, such a fascinating era and such amazing artists. The studio, like the art world as a whole was going through an artistic evolution. Trying to stay true to its traditions yet stretch its wings and challenge the artists and no where is that better demonstrated than in this volume. This book, along with Amud Amidi’s Cartoon Midern are essentials in my book shelf and in my hands for repeated perusal. An amazing book of an amazing era.
